Lots of ways you can go with this one. I think the delays favor teams who are well coached because there's more prep time for the first game, then a quicker turnaround after each night. Same goes for teams who are more athletic. Different on bodies playing 3 games in 3 days, at least of that intensity level, and it's going to favor the kids who played in similar circumstances in big AAU events over the summer.

 

You can go on the other side of the coin at the same time too.

 

One of the things that got me thinking about this thread and topic was a first round district game between Lexington Catholic and Lafayette.

 

In that one, it was Tanner Peruach, if I'm not mistaken, who dunked and bent the rim. It led to an hour delay in the tip. The fans were in the gym, raring and ready to go, full house at Tates Creek. I thought Lafayette and Catholic each handled the situation differently, as IIRC, Lafayette went back to the locker room fairly quickly, while Catholic kept their kids out (and soaking in the intensity of the atmosphere). In some ways, I thought that led to Catholic coming out a bit tight in that one because of that, but at the same time, others might say it wasn't a factor at all.

I also agree that teams with good coaches can benefit from the delay. They will have more time for film prep and to work on or improve upon their game plan not only for their 1st round games but their potential Semi finals and finals.

 

It can also be a huge benefit for teams that have had starters or contributors that have been hurt or sick - the delay gives them more time to heal and/or get back into playing shape with additional conditioning time.

 

I think it can hurt teams that rely heavily on the jump shot, especially if teams have had to cancel practices due to the weather as well. 2-3 days out of the gym can potentially take a good jump shooting team and make them average shooters which could result in some early upsets.

Probably depends on the team. I know of at least one team/coach who most would probably know if I mentioned the name who had team film sessions. I doubt most high school teams do it nearly to the extent that their football counterparts or that college basketball teams do, but I'd imagine that a fair number of your better programs have their teams either watching film or maybe taking them in live. Usually a few players will tag along on some scouting trips if it's a big /regional opponent, so even if they don't catch do a "film session" per se, they've sat there taking it in live with their coaches and scouts. Lots of that obviously depends on the kid. For some kids, it's probably a better use of their time to focus on other things, but for some kids, I don't think they'd lack video and scouting opportunities if they wanted them.

In the case of Bullitt and Jefferson whether the schools are allowed to practice when there is no school can be a huge factor. Jefferson tends to be more lenient on this than Bullitt. During districts when there was no school due to the previous snow Bullitt was not allowed and Jefferson was.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but in the 16th I think it left up to coaches. No rule about no school no practice.

Fayette County Publics aren't allowed to practice on days school is cancelled. Huge boost to Lexington Catholic, LCA, Scott County, and the rest who aren't subject to the policy.

Bullitt is the same as Fayette. Occasionally there will be an exception but not today...
