What Do College Softball Coaches Want-2015?

Three years ago I looked up the college softball recruiting questionnaires for the then top 12 rated D1 softball programs in the country. The idea was to see what college coaches wanted, or at least appeared to, based on the information they asked from their prospects. This could help players make sure their athletic resumes covered all the important points. And it revealed some interesting tidbits about the schools. So I thought it was time to revisit the topic and see what, if anything, in college softball recruiting has changed.

 

One thing that didn’t change was that I ended up looking up 12 schools instead of 10 because two schools don’t have any sort of recruit forms available. This time it’s the University of Michigan and Florida State that don’t have any online questionnaires for interested players. Maybe it’s just a way to cut down on the number of players they have to evaluate. For Michigan, this is a definite choice by the softball program since other programs do have questionnaires while none of the Florida State programs appear to.

My No: 1 is grades No:2 pitcher and catcher, No 3 speed No: 4 power.

I'll say, flip that #1 & #2 , then move catcher out on it's own to #2 , leave your #3 & #4 where they are, and rest your current #1 just below them.

If you and H D have looked at a lineup you will notice that there is 9 players plus another 6 or more in the dugout.They are not all pitchers or all catchers. Most all of these player have been recruited for the position they play.Referring back to another thread I saw you can not set 7 folding chairs on the field for all the positions except the pitcher and catcher.

If I was a college coach or even a coach for that matter....here is what I would look for......

Who needs grades when you can pay someone? to take test and do homework, so grades are out the door. She would have to be someone that kids and parents looked up too, so at least 6'5 and a ripping 230lbs. Needs to jack homeruns consistently and when she doesn't, has to to be Jimmy Johns fast. Be able to pitch at least 75mph and is a master of every known pitch to man. When catching, no one dare steals. If she plays infield, you better hit it high cause she has a vertical that would have NBA scouts knocking at her door. If she's playing in the outfield, yeah don't even think your going yard...that's right she'll rob all your homers. Well, I guess that sums it up. Time to wake up from my daydreaming. ??ok with all joking aside.....Grades should matter,you need some brains to play at a high level. But i would look for a kid that could over come let downs...Who cares if you make a mistake, how do you bounce back and that would go for any and all positions. Mentally tough would be my #1 factor. Tons of kids are smart, and athletic. The difference lies between the ears to go to the next level, or at least that's what I think.

mc 62, In college the main factor that separates teams from one strata to another is pitching. Period....after that it's hitting, and that is, for the most part, developed by the coaches...many college players do not play the positions they played in HS or travel (unless they are pitching in college), nor do they hit like they did in HS...Speed is a natural ability that can be enhanced, but not taught, so it is at a premium.

So, to your point, Yes, I have noticed 9 players on the field, and even more in the dugout, and they are not just there to take up space, that is an obvious point...from my experience, though, the two skill positions that carry the most weight in the sport right now are the Pitcher and Catcher positions...so, if you're not one of those players, and you're NOT a competitive threat with a bat in your hand, then you're one of the 6 or more in the dugout, and you have a different job to do....vansmetal, I agree with you that "mentally strong" is more desirable than "mentally smart" in my wish list.
