Make that 29 in a row over 36th District opponents.

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbred boys basketball team (24-3 overall) finished its district schedule with a 78-39 thrashing of the host Bellevue Tigers (12-12) on Wednesday. The Thoroughbreds have won six consecutive district tournament championships.

NewCath earned another top seed in the district tournament to be held at Newport this year with a 4-0 district record. Bellevue finished 2-2 in district play and will be the third seed and face the hosts in the tournament semifinals.

Bellevue could not contain the NewCath posts in Drew McDonald and Ben Weyer. McDonald scored 19 points and Weyer had 14.

Eleven different Thoroughbreds scored in the win. Sophomore Trey Wurtz added 10 for NewCath.

Bellevue saw two players score in double figures. They were Austin Woodyard and Zach Barrett with 13 each.

NewCath takes on Covington Holmes (20-6) at Northern Kentucky University on Friday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Nice job by Trey Wurtz. A stronger and meaner (in the basketball sense) Wurtz will be a big plus for the Breds next year. He has a really nice touch from the outside and has shown the ability to make moves down low. :thumb: Heard he is projected to grow to about 6'7"-6'8", another plus for the Breds.

Agreed. Weight room/agility work will help him as well.
