Top Teams:

 

 

1. Calloway County, 20-2, The Lakers played in the Superman Classic in Metropolis, IL this past week. They beat a winless Sumner, MO 80-29. Their next game was against Charleston, MO and they won to advance to the finals against Carbondale, IL. They lost in a close one 48-38.

 

 

2. Murray, 16-6, The Tigers played in the All A Classic this past week. They defeated Fulton County 93-50 in the 1st game hitting 17-24 from 3 pointers. Preston English had 8 of them. Murray started slowly against Mayfield falling behind 5-0 in the first 4 minutes of the game. They got it rolling in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. Duane Curtis had 3 straight 3’s in the 3rd quarter to open up a comfortable lead. Murray defeated Ballard Memorial 75-56 in the finals of the All A. Murray’s balanced attack was too much for the Bombers. James Boone is back and is a force. The 6’5 guard presents match-up problems. Murray will play Monroe County next week at Frankfort. Monroe is the top ranked team in all the 4th Region.

 

 

3. Paducah Tilghman, 15-5, The Tornado rolled in their 1st game in the Superman Classic beating Century, IL 92-50. The lost in the semifinals to Carbondale, IL 62-54. Paducah bounced back to win 3rd place as they defeated Charleston, Mo. In the consolation game.

 

 

4. Graves County, 12-9, The Eagles led state ranked Hopkinsville for most of the game before losing 86-80. Andrew Smith had 29 to lead all scorers. Graves lost to Arnold, FL 64-61 in the Gunner Shootout @ Marshall County. Graves bounced back from their Friday loss and defeated Cairo, IL 78-63.

 

 

5. Marshall County, 10-10, Marshall County hosted the Gunner Shootout this past weekend. It is held in honor of Coach Gus Gillispie’s son who passed away of brain cancer a few years ago. Marshall had a nice come from behind win against McCracken in OT on Friday. Collin Travis have 17 and 13 to lead the way. Marshall lost to Arnold, FL on Saturday 59-44. Arnold beat both Graves and Marshall in their visit to WKY.

 

 

6. McCracken County, 9-11, The Mustangs traveled to Illinois to take on Cairo in an up tempo game. They won 89-77. They had 6 players with 9 or more points. They lost @ Marshall in OT 51-50. The mustangs had an early 10 point lead in the first half. They are struggling on the offensive end only having one player in double figures in Nathan Telfair with 18.

 

 

 

7. Ballard Memorial, 11-10, The Bombers beat Hickman County 52-47 in the All A Classic in a game that was much closer than most anticipated including me. The Bombers overcame a 12 point 1st half deficit and was trailing 46-41 with a minute to go but pulled a come from behind victory 49-47. A three from Lee Chandler cut it to 46-44 and then a steal and bucket by TJ Wray tied it up. After another Viking turnover Keagan Cooper went to the line to give Ballard their first lead of the game. The Bombers lost in the finals to Murray in the All A Classic 75-56. Ballard’s up and down performances continued and the Tigers took advantage.

 

 

8. Mayfield, 8-9, The Cardinals were on fire in the quarterfinal game of the All A Classic and beat Carlisle County 91-72. Seniors Marshall Bacon (25) and Nick Felts (20) led the team to the victory. They could not find the same shooting stroke against Murray in the semifinals of the All A. They lost 57-50.

 

 

 

9. St. Mary, 10-10, The Vikings played Fulton City in the 1st game of the All A classic and beat them 48-36. They lost 49-47 in the semifinals of the All A. Read above under Ballard for details of the game.

 

 

10. Carlisle County, 12-6, The Comets lost to a hot shooting Mayfield team in the quarterfinal game of the All A Classic 91-72. Because of the early lose they did not have any other games this week.

Tuesday:

 

Calloway County @ Henry County, TN: The Lakers go south of the border to play the Patriots. Murray defeated Henry county earlier in the year.

 

Paducah Tilghman @ Mayfield: Mayfield is playing much better but is it enough to beat the Tornado.

 

McCracken County @ Carlisle County: Small School Carlisle County beat Marshall County earlier in the year. They look to beat another one of the large schools from Region 1

 

 

 

Friday:

 

Hickman County @ Fulton City: a 1st district game in which Fulton City tries to keep their hopes for the #1 seed alive. The Falcons are trying to avoid the #4 seed.

 

 

Marshall County @ Paducah Tilghman: this series is tied 1-1. Both games have been surprising so far. The 1st game Tilghman had a running clock on the Marshalls. Then a couple of weeks ago, Marshall was trailing 17-5 but came back and won the game without their leading scorer Mason Wooten. He was out with an injury. The Marshalls were without 2 other players as well.

 

 

St. Mary @ McCracken County: If there is any chance to get the #1 seed for either team this is a must win. Both teams have already lost to Paducah Tilghman and if they want a chance for a coin flip with the Tornado this is a must win game.

 

 

Murray @ Calloway County: Calloway beat Murray 61-37 the last time. The game was expected to be much closer. The Lakers dominated the 1st meeting between the two cross town rivals. A Calloway win would get them the #1 seed and an automatic berth in the regionals. This game will probably be rescheduled due to the All A state.

 

 

Saturday:

 

McCracken County @ Graves County: Graves won the 1st game 49-38 on January 6th @ McCracken County. The Eagles seem to have turned the corner while the Mustangs seem to be stuck in neutral.

It was tough narrowing it to the top ten. There are ten that is selected on the All Purchase team selected by the coaches.

I'm interested to see how Murray matches up in the All-A. They could make a run to the finals, but would have to probably win 3 tough games to get there.

The two best All A teams in the region played Friday night. Had Marshall Bacon not been out early in the year which caused the loss to affect Mayfield's seeding, it would have been a Murray/Mayfield final. If Mayfield breaks a few of those back court presses they would have beaten Murray.
