Raceland forces seven turnovers in blowout of Lawrence

LOUISA Josh Young has absorbed plenty of ribbing about his butterfinger moments from teammates and coaches.

Joke’s over.

Young picked a pair of passes as Raceland racked up seven takeaways in a 47-14 throttling of Lawrence County on Friday night at Luke Varney Jr. Memorial Stadium.

“Coach (Gary) Fannin always says that if they throw the ball this week, Mav, you pick it, and Josh, you just knock it down,” said Young, referring to the Rams’ defensive backs coach and fellow senior Maverick Dixon. “I guess he really can’t say that any more.”

Dixon also got in on the pickpocket parade with an interception. Nathaniel Davidson and Seth Holbrook each recovered a Bulldogs fumble, while Kyle Jamison pounced on two bobbled balls. Davidson ran his retrieval 34 yards to the house.

“If we’re going to go where we want to go, our defense has to lead the way,” said Raceland coach Michael Salmons. “The defensive coaches outlined a good game plan, and kudos to the kids for buying into what we were doing ... I’m really happy for those guys.”

Offensively, six different Rams were involved in scoring plays.

Great article.

When four particular Raceland Rams received their diplomas after last season, one might have been able to spot Lawrence County football coach Joe Cecil in the cheering section during “Pomp and Circumstance.”

He wouldn’t have been alone, either.

However, heading into Friday night’s Homecoming Night matchup with Raceland, Cecil is now thinking he should’ve been careful what he wished for.

“I couldn’t have been happier to see that group graduate,” he said with a laugh. “They were men, they were experienced and they could play. What is frustrating is that they just replaced them.”

I love the acknowledgements from Coach Cecil, but its not about a particular group. Sure, call us men, calls us players, but what made us that was the rich tradition that was set before the 2013 team. The tradition that started in 1928. THAT is what Cecil needs to talk about. It's not about a particular group of "men"; every one on that team including the freshman, sophomores, and juniors that didn't play, made that 2013 team. The scout team makes a team. They're the ones that helped prepare that group for each week. And that scout team that prepared the 2013 team each week, is now the "men" that are considered the "group" of 2014. It is about everyone.

Flagged for leaping over a player, stupid rule players do it all the time on the goal line and it's not flagged. What fun would it be if you had to run around the defense all the time? Go though them, around them, over them, under them what ever it takes.

"It's for the safety of the players.." blah blah blah. You have thirty pounds of pads on for a reason. In the NFL, you can't hit a quarter back below the waist. WHAT?!! Might as well change football all together. Take the pads off, put on flags and call it football. Please.....

Coach Lewis said to put a halo around the QB's and when you get near him, the play is over. Hahaha, you know how he meant that.
