Nathan Jones stepped down as the head football coach at Jeffersontown High School on Monday for personal reasons, J’town principal Marty Pollio wrote in an email to The Courier-Journal on Thursday.

 

Gary Weiter, who coached the Chargers from 2008-11 before becoming the school’s athletic director, will coach the program for the rest of this season.

 

“We will hire a new coach as quickly as possible at the conclusion of this season to lead our team into (Class 6-A) next year,” Pollio wrote, noting the school’s impending move up from Class 5-A next season.

 

Jones was in his third season with the Chargers and had posted an 11-17 record, including an 0-4 mark this season. He did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

 

Weiter was 26-20 in his four seasons as head coach, including a 10-3 record in 2011 as the Chargers reached their first regional final since 1992.

 

“It’s going to be tough on me pulling double duty,” said Weiter, who will continue to serve as athletic director. “The kids are adjusting well. They’re a resilient bunch, and they’ll bounce back. We’re just hoping to salvage something positive the rest of the year.”

I guess that answers that. I find it hard to believe he just stepped down on his own, but from what I have heard with people involved with the program that this is the best thing that could have happened for those young men.
