ASHLAND — What Newport Central Catholic game?

Shortly after a roller-coaster ride of a Friday night that was supposed to present one of the many peaks in program history, the Ashland Tomcats came to terms with the fact no game would be played.

Pent-up emotion reserved for the grand reopening of Putnam Stadium had to simmer after nearly reaching a boiling point.

As copious rainfall flooded the field, one thing was certain. The game would, at least, be delayed.

“I told them, all we can do is take all the pads off,” recalled Ashland coach Tony Love. “They were sweating, amped up, ready to go. We needed to cool down as much as possible.”

After the relentless rain finally ceased, the damage was done. An unplayable field left Ashland trying to work out a makeup with NewCath, but the teams couldn’t settle on a solution.

By Monday, it was no matter.

“Over the weekend, we were all upset we didn’t get to play,” said senior wideout Trent Woods. “But when we got back here on Monday, it was just back to business, back to preparing for the next game. Who cares what happened last week? We got a game on Friday.”

So many memories go back to last year. A wonderful experience, I know, for me and may others. One of the best games we played last year and it was, IMO, the funnest last year. A great atmosphere. Still to this day, it gives me chills. Those are the games you will always remember.

Last year was an amazing game. I expect this year to be a nailbiter too.
