Collins Notebook 8-27-14

Featured Replies

The Titans didn’t start out the season quite the way they wanted to on Friday night, losing on the road to Simon Kenton 33-14, but that won’t stop them for having big goals and aspirations for this season. Collins played 32 players Friday night with a lot of them seeing their first varsity action. The youth and inexperience of the Titans showed in the first half, as mistakes and missed opportunities led to a 20-0 halftime lead for Simon Kenton. However, after a lengthy halftime due to a lightning delay, the Titans showed us a bit of what could be to come as they fought back to within 26-14 after 3 quarters. The Titans had a chance to cut the lead to 26-21, but fell less than a yard short on a 4th down conversion and lost some of the momentum they had built. Even in the loss, Collins showed a lot of potential and should only improve as the season goes on.

On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Browning Becherer had a nice debut, completing 10 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown and rushing 12 times for 31 yards. Sure, he could’ve been better, but he did very well for his first varsity start and a few dropped passes didn’t help. Receivers EJ Burk and Dylan Siler both had good games and Burk caught a 33 yard TD pass in the 3rd quarter. Freshman RB/WR Nasean Roseberry caught just 2 passes for 11 yards but has the potential to be a big contributor to the Titan offense with his speed. Sophomore receiver Dalton Maggard showcased his speed on a punt return that he nearly ran back for a touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball, junior Damian Little who joined the team this year started at DT and recorded 3 tackles. Senior Darrian Wright, also in his first year with the program, played a lot of minutes at DB and performed very well. Freshman safety Jay Becherer recorded 6 tackles and his brother Bennett, a junior, added 5. Freshman Nick Eades was impressive at LB recording 5 tackles. Junior DB Casey Warner had 6 tackles, an INT and a fumble recovery in his first varsity game. Senior LB Bushy Wells led the defense with 14 tackles and was impressive as expected.

Looking ahead to this Friday night, the Titans will host South Oldham in their first home game of the year. South Oldham’s game last week against West Jessamine was cancelled, so this will be the first game of the season for the Dragons. Last year’s leading rusher Kevin Kuriger (1,145 yards, 6 TD’s) is back for his senior season. Senior Michael McGee will take over at quarterback for South after the graduation of Chase Lightfoot. Linebacker Conner John is also back after leading the Dragons in tackles last year. South Oldham went 8-4 last season, but lost some key players from that team. It certainly won’t be easy, but Collins should be favored in this game. Home field advantage is usually a guarantee for the Titans, as they have only lost at Titan Stadium two times ever, both of those by less than a touchdown.

This should be a good game. South could have used the game last week but that's the way it goes. Will depend on South's ability to pass for their success. Collins has been playing well last few years and always plays big at home. Look forward to seeing the result of this one.
