LexCath: Josh Mesmer 3 G, 2 A; Marty Brown 1 G, Trey Queenan 1 G, Andrew Maloney 1 G.

Henry Clay: Graham Parker (more than a couple), Cooper Cason at least one. Sorry, I do not have full stats.

MVP: Josh Mesmer.

Trey got an assist, he hit Josh on the crease for a one timer ;-)

First of all Congrats to the Knights! These last 2 games were real nail-biters. Very happy for Josh that he was able to come back and play so well after missing all but the last 3 games, including scoring 2 straight game winners after his football injury.

A little more formal and accurate summary of the game.

The 2014 KLA High School Championship featured a rematch of the 2013 KLA finalists – The Henry Clay Blue Devils and the Lexington Catholic Knights. The Knights had 17 seniors on this years squad. The stands were almost full at Bryan Station High School reflecting the growing popularity of the nation’s fastest growing sport in Kentucky.

The Knights took 1 to 0 lead in the first quarter when senior and Transylvania-commit Josh Mesmer scored on a pass from Trey Queenan. Senior and face-off specialist Marty Brown added another unassisted goal early in the 2nd quarter. Henry Clay battled back with a goal before the half ended and the half time score was 2 to 1.

The Knights got two scores that included Mesmer and Queenan in the 3rd quarter to build to a 4 to 1 lead. The 3rd quarter ended with the Knights with a 4 to 1 lead.

Henry Clay came out strong to start the 4th quarter with two quick goals and knotted up the score at 4 to 4 But Mesmer scored his 3rd goal of the game to put the Knights back on top 5 to 4. Senior Andrew Moloney scored the final Knight goal to give the Knights a 6 to 4 lead. The Blue Devils were not done though and they came back with a score to make the game 6 to 5. The strong Knight defense secured the victory with outstanding play by senior and Transylvania commit Brock Slater, seniors academic All-American Ryan Edwards and Ambrose Martino and strong defense from sophomore standout Stevan Kriss. Key saves by senior goalie Matt Cervoni in the closing minutes secured the Knight 6 to 5 victory.

Mesmer, playing in only his 3rd game on restricted time while still rehabbing from foot and ankle surgery in November, was awarded the game MVP. The Knights finished the Championship season with an overall record of 16 – 7 and were undefeated in KLA league play during the season. The Knights are coached by former D1 Bellarmine standout Matt Campbell and former Knight Lacrosse and three time all-state standout and Academic All-American Logan Otto. Campbell took over the head coaching position for the Knights in 2012 after long time Knight coach Terry Justice was selected to start up Transylvania University’s new D3 program in 2012. Coach Justice was on-hand to see his final freshman class at Lexington Catholic win its first State title.

I still have not seen the formal stat sheet but I know that Graham Perkins and Cooper Cason scored for Henry Clay. Perkins is a senior this year. Cason is only a junior and should return next year.

Here is a video of the game on youtube:

Congrats Lex Cath!

Bluegrasscard,

I heard Coach Otto might have moved over to Transy. Is that true?

My source says it's a very good possibility.
