2014 54th District Tournament Preview

The 54th District Tournament usually is one of the better district tournament’s in EKY. Previous years have seen Perry County Central and Hazard draw each other in the first round, however this is not the case this year. This district can go three ways.

1. Perry County Central:

The Commodores finished the regular season at 3-1 in district play with two of those wins coming against crosstown rival, Hazard, the other win coming on the road at Buckhorn. Perry Central’s only loss came to, crosstown Hazard. The Commodores are the defending 54th district champions.

2. Hazard:

Hazard got the luck of the draw and didn’t draw Perry County Central in the first round of the district tournament like in the past. Hazard went 2-2 in district play with both losses coming to crosstown rival Perry County Central. One of the two wins also came against Perry County Central, the other one came against Buckhorn. Hazard will be looking to upend Perry County Central and reclaim the 54th district crown.

3. Buckhorn:

Coach Noble has his Wildcats firing on all cylinders at the right time. Buckhorn is on a 10 game win streak, with their last loss coming to none other than Perry County Central, a team they meet in the first round of the 54th district tournament. Coach Noble shocked the world once when his Wildcats defeated Perry County Central, can they do it again?

This team will be scary good next season, losing just 3 seniors with only one of them a starter (if my memory serves me correct).

4. Leslie County:

The Eagles are hoping they can make it back to the regional tournament for the second consecutive year. The Eagles started out the season poorly but have came on strong as of late.

Players to Watch:

Braxton Beverly and Justin Johnson of Perry County Central. Both have had great seasons averaging double-doubles. Justin Johnson leads Perry Central in points per game with 23…Beverly adds 22 points per game. John Toomer is another good player on the Commodores roster.

Chris Hudson and Josh Hollan from Hazard. Both are great players. Chris leads Hazard with 16 points per game while Josh adds 14 a game. Hudson is Hazard’s leading rebounder with 9 boards per game. Hudson is a big boy that will go straight to the rim if you give him space.

Connor Hoskins of Buckhorn. The Sophomore guard is deadly from three point land, give him an inch of space and he will burn you. He will also find his way to the rim. Buckhorn has several more nice players that give quality minutes and can score. Peyton Cooper, Richard Stidham, Josh Crank, Caleb Estep.

Blake Asher and Austin Spurlock of Leslie County. Both are averaging right around the same points per game. Blake finds his way to the charity stripe going 94/139 free throws, averaging 4 free throws per game. Blake is also the leading rebounder for the Eagles, averaging 3 boards a game.

The Pairings:

February 25th…7 PM….Buckhorn vs. Perry County Central

February 26th…7 PM….Leslie County @ Hazard

February 28th…7 PM….Championship

My Predictions:

Buckhorn upsets Perry County Central

Hazard over Leslie County

Hazard over Buckhorn
