Featured Replies

Another week of Kentucky high school basketball has come and gone with some schools didn’t get to play but one maybe two games due to bad weather wreaked havoc throughout the state.

1. Knott County Central (18-6):

The Patriots went 3-1 this past week with wins over Cordia 70-61, Jenkins 72-25, Fleming County 73-62. The Patriots only loss came Wayne County 81-77 in the Jock Sutherland Classic over at Lexington Lafayette.

Junior guard, Camron Justice led the Pats with 36 including 3/3 from 3pt range in the win over Cordia. Big man Evan Hall added 19 points for the Patriots.

Everyone seen playing time as the Patriots rolled past Jenkins 72-25. Camron Justice led the Patriots once again with 20.

In the loss to Wayne County, Camron Justice, yet again led the Pats with 32 points and 9 boards.

Camron Justice was at it again on Sunday as Knott County Central played Fleming County in the Joe B. Hall Prep Classic over at Montgomery County High School. Camron went for 27 and Evan Hall added 22 for the Patriots. Fleming County senior forward, Troy Steward piled in 47 points including 9 three pointers.

Knott County Central continues to show why they are the true King of the 14th Region.

The Patriots only have three remaining games left and one of those is against #2, Perry County Central.

Upcoming Games: vs. Perry County Central 2/13, vs. Mercer County 2/15, vs. Shelby Valley 2/20

2. Perry County Central (18-5):

Perry County Central was able to get in two games last week and both were wins, big wins.

The Commodores picked up a 65-62 victory over arch rival, Hazard on Hazard’s home court. Sophomore guard, Braxton Beverly led the Commodores with 27. Chris Hudson led the Bulldogs with 20. Josh Hollon added 19 for the Dawgs..

Perry County Central defeated the defending state champs, Madison Central 73-62 on Sunday over at Montgomery County High School in the Joe B. Hall Prep Classic. Braxton Beverly led the Commodores with 25. Big man Justin Johnson added 24 for the Commodores, including a dunk.

Perry County Central is sure making a statement in the 14th region that have what it takes to win the 14th region.

Upcoming Games: @ Knox Central 2/11, @ Knott County Central 2/13, vs. Central Hardin 2/15

3. Cordia (18-7):

Not known to be a powerhouse has turned the ship around since Coach Roderick Rhodes has came to town. The Lions have been to the regional tournament 2 of the 3 years that coach Rhodes has been the head coach.

The Lions played just two games last week going 1-1. The Lions made the short trip over to Knott County Central to take on the Patriots in a big 53rd district matchup to determine the 1 seed. This game wouldn’t be nothing short of a slobber knocker with Knott County Central pulling out the 70-61 win.

Cordia was scheduled to play Letcher County Central in another big 53rd district matchup to determine the 2 and 3 seeds but for an unannounced reason, that game was canceled. Cordia was able to pickup another game on the same night with Breathitt County over in Jackson. That game would be another good one, this time the Lions were the ones victorious 57-50.

Upcoming Games: @ June Buchanan 2/10, @ Jenkins 2/13, vs. Perry County Central 2/21

4. Hazard (17-6):

Coach Holland and the Bulldogs continue make a strong statement in the 14th region. Hazard is rolling right now winning 8 of their last 10. The Bulldogs would have two games last week, one of them against arch rival, Perry County Central. Perry County Central would win a thriller 65-62. Perry County Central, at one point had a double digit lead on the Dawgs but couldn’t hold it as Hazard would twindle it down but Perry was able to hang on for the win. Hazard was able to pick up a win over Letcher County Central 67-53.

Upcoming games: @ Wolfe County 2/11, vs. Jackson City 2/14, @ Shelby Valley 2/15

5. Breathitt County (17-5):

The Bobcats got in four games last week. They got off to a good start by defeating arch rival Wolfe County 65-51 over in Campton. Senior guard Wes Noble led the Bobcats with 28 points.

Breathitt County would also pick up wins over, Lee County 75-64 and Jackson City 58-44. The Bobcats only loss of the week came to Cordia 57-50.

This team is the dark horse of the 14th region and will be a dangerous team for anyone.

Upcoming games: @ Henry Clay 2/10, vs. Powell County 2/11, @ Letcher County Central 2/13

6. Buckhorn (15-7):

The Wildcats picked up two solid wins last week, defeating Estill County 66-56 and Powell County 79-78.

Buckhorn hosted the Engineers of Estill County on Tuesday who made the long haul from Irvine to the little community of Buckhorn in Perry County. Estill got off to a good start, leading most, if not all of the first half. Second half, however was a different story as Buckhorn would storm back to take the lead, once they gained the lead, they never looked back, Estill got as close as 3 but that would be it.

Buckhorn made the trip over to Stanton for a game with the Pirates of Powell County. Buckhorn lead most of the first half and even had a 16 point led (if I’m not mistaken) in the first half on 7/8 three pointers. Powell County would storm back in the second half behind the hot shooting of Brad Smith who finished with 26 for the Pirates including 5 three’s. Both teams missed a ton of free throws.

Buckhorn was scheduled to play OBI in the first-ever Scott Blank Classic on Saturday, no score was reported to the scoreboard, assuming it was canceled due to weather.

Upcoming games: @ June Buchanan 2/13, @ Letcher County Central 2/18, vs. Jenkins 2/20, vs. Powell County 2/22

7. Wolfe County (12-8):

The Wolves went 0-2 last week with losses to Breathitt County 65-51 and Model 66-59.

Wolfe County was hoping to get revenge on an earlier loss to Breathitt County but that wasn’t the case on this night as the Bobcats would roll to a 15 point, 65-51 win.

The Wolves made the long haul down from the mountains to the big city of Richmond to take on the Model Patriots. Game would go back and forth before Model pulled out a 66-59 win. The win for Model marks coach Wes Scarberry’s 100th career win.

Upcoming games: vs. Hazard 2/11, @ Sayre 2/13, @ Owsley County 2/15

8. Estill County (14-9):

After winning 8 straight, that seen wins over Mercer County, Powell County, Lewis County and Model, the Engineers lost their only game of last week 66-56 to Buckhorn. Estill County was scheduled to face Letcher County Central on Saturday in Irvine but due to weather, that game was canceled, as of now, it hasn’t been rescheduled but both teams are hoping that it does before the season ends.

Upcoming games: @ Lee County 2/10, @ Harrison County 2/11, vs. Powell County 2/13, @ Berea 2/14

9. Letcher County Central (14-11):

The Cougars lost their only game last week, a 67-53 defeat to Hazard. Josh Owens led the Cougars with 19 points. Chippy Frazier added 16 for the Cougars.

Upcoming games: vs. Breathitt County 2/13, vs. Buckhorn 2/18, vs. Pike County Central 2/20

10. Leslie County (10-13):

The Eagles went 2-1 last week, with wins over Jenkins 68-64 and Middlesboro 76-64. Leslie County’s loss came to Harlan 84-58.

Upcoming games: vs. Barbourville 2/11, vs. Riverside Christian 2/12, vs. Lee County 2/14, vs. Knox Central 2/15

For those of you wondering, several teams only have 3-4 games left, that's listed, while others have 2-3 listed, that's because those teams that have just 2-3 listed is because they have about 7 games remaining.

Anyone agree/disagree?

Knott Central and Perry Central is a toss-up, but I would place PCC at 1.

You mention Justin Johnson's 24 against Madison Central included a dunk. He had multiple dunks in the game, including a vicious one off a nice behind the back pass from Beverly. He had an impressive 360 windmill dunk in the pregame, and just missed one going through the legs. His jumping strength and ferociousness on the glass makes him an extremely fun player to watch.

I have also enjoyed Evan Hall who is very smooth and efficient around the basket. Gets himself in position for a lot of easy buckets.
