Right on Lady ADS...

Give Danville all the credit for an unbelievable gritty effort to even keep this game close. Brossart was in control of this game for almost three quarters with a 8 to 11 point lead. Danville was fighting foul trouble most of the game and a HUGH height disadvantage but wouldn't quit. Brossart's undoing was early in the fourth quarter with a nice lead they did the dreaded "play not to lose" strategy and lost momentum and just couldn't get it back. Brossart kept slowing things down and had several turnovers that allowed Danville to slowly close the gap. Danville next gets New Cath in the semi's.

I saw it a bit differently.

 

Brossart led by 10 at halftme 32-22 with good balanced scoring from six contributors AND held an 11-4 advantage from the free-throw line. Brossart led by as many as thirteen, 40-27 with 4:33 to play in third quarter when the Lady Ads began to use their quickness to advantage via the dribble-drive which resulted in numerous fouls from the L'Stangs, and a 9-0 advantage from the free-throw line. Brossart put 15 on the board on six field-goals - no indication there of "play not to lose" - simply outquicked. The trend continued into the fourth quarter where a pair of "dagger" 3-pointers and another 4 point advantage from the free-throw line for Danville, while the L'Stangs were battling the Lady Ad's full-court press, and maybe made a couple of questionable shot choices. If anything we were a bit caught up in the Ad's fast-paced game, and a bit away from our post-presence game. Free-throws were the key. Danville 16 of 26 in the second half, Brossart 3 of 7.

 

Play not to lose is a very unfair accusation. Danville outscored Brossart 19-19 (38) to 15-11 (26) in the second half.

 

Hats off to the Lady Ads who never gave up, were tenatious in all facets of the game, resulting in their come-back win.

DANVILLE 60, BROSSART 58 – The Mustangs were unable to hit a tying free throw with 10 seconds remaining.

 

Seventeen seconds after cutting the lead to one with two foul shots, 59-58, Mustangs senior center Sarah Futscher missed the front end of a crucial 1-and-1.

 

The Admirals were fouled with two seconds remaining and made one foul shot to extend the lead to two. Brossart was unable to get a shot off at the buzzer.

 

Futsched tallied a game-best 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Senior guard Abby Stadtmiller scored 10 points, and sophomore center Emily Schultz chipped in nine points, 13 rebounds and a pair of blocks.

 

The Mustangs led by 10 points at halftime and six entering the fourth quarter.

You may have something AD. Philip Rivers and the Chargers Offensive Line ate lunch at my son's restaurant the day before they beat the Bengals in the playoffs this year.

I think we will agree to disagree and my point of playing not to lose is the Mustangs were having no problem getting the ball inside all game with their height advantage. Then in the fourth quarter they went away from that and kept passing the ball around outside and to Danville's credit they were getting turnovers. If Brossart had kept to their plan of pounding it inside like they did most of the game I think Danville would have gotten in too much foul trouble to make a comeback. But once again give Danville a world of credit for their fight and will.

Can't help but wonder what if when Danville player whistled for a personal foul in first half. While the Officials and Coach Mason discussed which player commited the foul - the clock was still running - From 2:49 to 2:37 before someone finally got his attention and was stopped.. No attempt whatsoever to reset. In a game of that nature - potentially a costly mistake by an unattentive clock operator..

While doing the game broadcast we caught it right away, and were surprised that the time was not reset.

 

I suspect the clocker didn't fess up and that the officials were unaware. At least it was the same advantage/disadvantage for both teams at that point. Hindsight being 20/20 we'd (Brossart) probably like to have had those 12 seconds back - but since it was in the first half, who knows??
