NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 58, LaRUE COUNTY 40 – Thoroughbreds senior forward Nikki Kiernan set a personal season best with 28 points in a semifinal of the Montgomery County Invitational.

 

The score was tied after the first quarter, but Kiernan scored 14 points in the second quarter to help NewCath jump out to a 19-point halftime lead. She also grabbed nine rebounds.

 

The Thoroughbreds, who started the decisive second frame with a 16-0 run, will face Ashland Blazer in the championship at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

 

Junior forward Alexus Mayes added 18 points and nine rebounds for NewCath, which its ninth straight game.
