NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 58, BOONE COUNTY 46 – Thoroughbreds senior forward Nicole Kiernan recorded a double-double, tallying a game-best 24 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

 

Junior forward Alexus Mayes totaled 15 points, including seven in the fourth quarter to help NewCath pull away.

 

Junior guard Alexis Switzer led the Rebels with 13 points.

It was triple-header up on the "hill" last night and the Breds take 2 out of 3 against the visiting Rebels. The NewCath Frosh team wins behind the strength of 8th grader Mikayla Freppon who couldn't be stopped. The JV game saw the Rebels hang on for the 40-39 win in OT, as Audrey Geisler's shot at the buzzer rolled off the rim. The NewCath frosh and jv have some very good talent. The frosh consist of 6 8th graders and 5 frosh, while the JV is 2 Jr's and 7 frosh.

 

The varsity "tussle" was a good one. The Breds pressure "D" forced quite a few turnovers, but Boone was able to convert some baskets beating the press. The one thing this Breds team has a lot of.....is speed. The guard play of Ware, Seibert, Davenport, & Zimmerman was excellent, with a few ill-advised passes, but overall great game by these 4 young ladies. Ware and Seibert can flat-out "fly", Davenport very poised under pressure, and Zimmerman giving it her "all". Kiernan and Mayes down low just too much to handle.

 

Boone did a nice job of staying in this game, but losing Switzer because of fouls in the 2nd quarter hurt the Lady Rebels, she is a very nice player. Dallis Knotts with a huge 3 to cap off a Rebels 8 pt. run in the 3rd quarter to cut the Breds lead to 1. However, the Breds pressure and Kiernan and Mayes were too much to overcome.

 

Couple of BGP'ers in the house last night that I chatted with....RCC9 & Boone89 (who BTW forgot to bring his can of Lawnboy Repellent :lol2:). Rebel91Dad, sorry I didn't get a chance to say hi, when I finally realized it was you it was too late. :(

The takeaway for me in this one is how much more athletic Kiernan looks. Last year, she was good because she was big and skilled. This year she appears to be even more athletic to me. She is a load! The only thing I would nit pick about her is some of her shot selections. Every once in awhile she takes one that's makes you say what was that? But then I realize that she still just a high school kid. She's so good that you forget that sometimes! After watching them last night, that's the team you're going to have to go through to win the 9th.

Looking forward to see them play Green county next Saturday in Glasgow.
