For most teams, this past week was the final “tune up” before preparing for the part of the schedule that actually means something. District play. Let’s take a look back at the action from the previous Friday and see which teams gained momentum heading in to the second half of their season.

 

Bellevue 48 Carroll County 6

After dropping games in back to back weeks, the Tigers rebounded in a big way with a dominating performance over 2A Carroll County. Bellevue was led by the duo of Tyler Ackerson ( 111 rushing yards, 132 passing yards) and Dylan Huff (103 rushing yards, 52 receiving yards). The story on the Tigers continues to be the passing game and progression of quarterback Tyler Ackerson that has made the Bellevue offense much tougher to stack the box on. The biggest winner is running back Dylan Huff, who has regularly rushed for 100+ yards rushing, while also being Ackerson’s favorite target through the air.

 

Conner 13 Campbell County 12

It took a come from behind performance, but with under a minute to play in the 4th quarter, Drew Barker led the Cougars to a game winning touchdown to up their record to 3-1. Barker finished 17-for-26 passing for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also picking up 90 yards on 23 rushes. The story of the game, however, was the running of sophomore quarterback Matt Wilson who finished with 122 yards on 22 carries. This is a great momentum win for Conner heading in to district play.

 

Dixie Heights 36 Newport Catholic 7

The Colonels continue to get better each week and have now won 3 straight after falling by 8 to Covcath in week 1. The Dixie offense has rolled in the past 3 weeks, averaging 37 ppg and racking up over 400 yards against Newcath. Drew Moore finished with 225 yards passing, while senior running back Darion Washington continues to make a name for himself with 127 yards rushing on 27 carries. For Dixie this win sets them up nicely for the start of district play. For Newcath, district play couldn’t come soon enough as the goal from playing such a tough schedule is to get better each week and try to stay healthy.

 

Franklin County 28 Beechwood 24

The Tigers dropped to 2-2 but gave the undefeated Flyers their closest game to date. Beechwood led 24-14 in the 4th quarter but simply couldn’t hang on against the tough Franklin County running backs. The Tigers were led by sophomore quarterback Kyle Fieger who finished with 291 yards passing and a touchdown. While it might be a disappointment for the Beechwood faithful, there Is a lot for the Tigers to take and build on from this game heading in to district play.

 

Henry Clay 21 Boone County 6

The Rebels remained winless under new head coach Jeff Griffith. While the defense was able to hold the Henry Clay offense in check for most of the game, it was two 4th quarter touchdowns that sealed the win for the Blue Devils. Boone was led by Aaron Floyd who finished with 78 yards rushing on 24 carries.

 

Lloyd 28 Gallatin County 0

The Juggernauts improved to 3-2 with a defensive shutout against the Wildcats, who came in averaging 35 ppg. Lloyd racked up 346 yards of offense, led by senior running back Jared Gabbard who had 2 touchdowns.

 

Ludlow 18 Bishop Brossart 12

The Panthers snapped a 13 game losing streak dating back to last season, with an 18-12 win over the Mustangs. Ludlow scored on their second play of the game and had a 12-12 tie broke late with a Mitchell Cody touchdown run to preserve Coach Rick Hornsby’s first win of the 2013 season.

 

Mason County 17 Newport 12

It was another disappointing week for the Wildcats as they remain winless under new head coach Matt Schmitz, but a lot can be said about the defense of Newport as they held undefeated Mason County to their lowest offensive output of the season. Newport was led by senior wide receiver Jayshawn Stanley who had 5 catches for 123 yards.

 

Scott 55 Holy Cross 13

The Eagles remained perfect and continue the best start in school history as they improved to 5-0 behind the trio of Jash Castleman, Roberto London, and Chris Roberts. Castleman finished the game with 3 touchdowns and had 104 yards rushing on 11 carries. London took his first two carries to paydirt for touchowns and finished with 95 yards on just 3 carries. Roberts rushed for 69 carries on just 5 carries. Quarterback Ben Osborne also passed for 72 yards and a touchdown on 2-for-3 passing. Five Eagles reached the end zone in the victory. Heading in to district play, there is a lot to like about this team regardless of the schedule they’ve played.

 

Shelby County 19 Ryle 13

The Raiders fell to 1-4 on the season as they couldn’t hang on to a 13-3 and 13-10 first half lead. Ryan Wolff led the Raiders with 132 yards rushing on 14 carries, including a second quarter 70 yard touchdown run.

 

Simon Kenton 36 Cooper 6

The Pioneers improved to 5-0 for the second consecutive season as they knocked off 2-3 Cooper. Simon Kenton racked up 567 yards of total offense led by the duo of Brenan Kuntz (147 yards rushing, 191 yards passing) and Dillon Powell (147 yards rushing, 52 yards receiving). Kuntz completed a pass to 6 different receivers, while the defense gave up just 212 yards of total offense.

 

Highlands 42 Paducah Tilghman 25

Playing without starting running back Zach Harris and offensive lineman Kyle Thurston, the Birds were able to go on the road and pick up a 17 point win over a very talented Paducah Tilghman team. Drew Houliston was 16-for-26 with 266 yards passing and 3 touchdowns but Jaylen Hayes finished as star of the game with 154 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on 20 carries. Jensen Feggins finished as Houliston’s favorite wideout target with 7 catches for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns.
