Coming into the season, nobody knew what to expect from the Corbin Redhounds.

Steve Jewell’s squad was coming off its first losing season since 1995, and many preseason publications were tagging the Redhounds to finish third in their respective district behind Wayne County and Bell County.

And, this is why — Wayne County returned most of its talent from last season’s school-best 10-win season, while the Bobcats, well, are the Bobcats — they don’t rebuild, they just reload.

And for Corbin, the Redhounds just graduated their leading rusher (Matt Jewell) and leading receiver (Josh Jewell) off their team, and basically starting with another quarterback behind center, with head coach Steve Jewell moving Taylor Waddle from the signal-calling position and replacing him with Corey Taylor.

So far, so good.

It seems as if every move the Redhound coaching staff has made this season, has been the correct one.

Taylor passed for 252 yards and two touchdowns during Corbin’s 55-7 win over Danville in Week 3 while Waddle has turned into the Redhounds’ Mr. Everything.

He had a 59-yard touchdown reception against the Admirals, a 45-yard rushing touchdown and also scored on a 42-yard punt return.

Yep, both Waddle and Taylor have settled in quite nicely in their new roles and let’s not forget Jake Coppock. He rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries against Danville and leads the team with 396 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

You also can’t forget about the guys upfront.

Corbin’s offensive line has done a tremendous job run and pass blocking so far and of course, the Redhound defense has been just as solid.

Players such as Tanner Powers, Cody Lane, Jessie Liford, Harley Lambert, Dalton Anderson, William Reedy, Cai Jackson, Zach Henson, Austin O’Neil, Cody McHargue, Chris Middleston and Coby Cima have played a big role in the Redhound success as well.

Powers had 10 tackles against Danville while Jessie Liford had 8. William Reedy had six tackles along with Cody Lane.

Powers continues to be one of the best defensive players, leading Corbin with 24 tackles while Liford has 21, Reedy has 20 and Cai Jackson has 19.

Liford has two fumble recoveries and O’Neil leads Corbin with two interceptions.

Corbin’s formula for success has been a good one, but things are going to get a bit tougher in a couple of weeks with teams such as Wayne County, Bell County and Knox Central looming on its schedule.

The Redhounds have outscored their opponents (who are a combined 2-13 this season) 160-2. Corbin’s 14-0 shutout win over Southwestern to open the season looks to be a bit more impressive even though the Warriors are 0-4 this season.

Southwestern has lost two games (Knox Central and Somerset) by only three points a piece and had Belfry down in the fourth quarter last week before losing, 38-27.

Since then, Corbin has dominated its opponents, seeing running clocks during each of the past three games.

Things are about to get tougher with district foes Wayne County and Bell County looming in the horizon, but the Redhounds look ready for the challenges ahead.

Great article. Corbin has been a real surprise. Great to see them showing such dominance early after losing talent that most did not know they could replace so well. In a year where Bell is not the tidal wave they normally are - Wayne may be their only big challenge in the regular season.

When will they play someone besides Trimble Co and pick up a Harlan Co since they are back. Even play a Williamsburg, Middlesboro, Somerset, Pulaski, or Whitley. They have 3 cupcakes, Trimble, Casey and McCreary Cent.(cant help since dist games)

They will play Pulaski Co. next year in the Ray Correll Bowl. It wouldn't surprise me to see one of the other teams you mentioned on their schedule in 2015, but my guess is that it would be Middlesboro. I think Whitley Co. will end up on the schedule after Whitley's current AD retires.

 

I know there is an former Redhound player who owns a business in Trimble Co. who was part of the coin toss ceremony at the game, not sure if that is why they ended up on the schedule though.

Trimble County is classified as cupcake team but the program has been through turmoil having replaced 4 coaches in a 5 year span. Coach Justin Franklin finally took control of the program and is returning for his 3rd season as the head coach, now this year he will have 13 seniors in the mix along with a close to 50 man roster(highest it has ever been since taking over the program.) Now am I saying Trimble County will be a dominate force, no, but this program is on the rise as long as Justin Franklin is in control. T Hopefully this year the score will not be as bad but the Raiders due have to travel into the house of the Redhounds.
