Another week of football has passed and we are now one week closer to the middle of the season and the start of big district games for certain teams. Let’s take a look back at week 3 action:

Beechwood 34 Holy Cross 7

No surprise here as the Beechwood Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season. Despite the injury bug hitting the Ft Mitchell squad, they have seen some of the young guys step up and fill the void on both sides of the ball. Sophomore QB Kyle Fieger was 10-for-19 for 125 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air, while another sophomore, Brett Slusher, had a 68 yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter. Jalen Beal was the one bright spot for the Indians, rushing for 131 yard on 33 carries.

Bethlehem 50 Ludlow 8

It’s been a rough start to the season for the Panthers as they fall to 0-4 on the season and continue to struggle on both sides of the ball.

Campbell County 17 Cooper 12

The Camels improved to 3-1 with a road win over Cooper to drop them to 2-2. It was once again the Avery Wood show as he finished with 117 yards rushing on 26 carries and 103 yards passing with two touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground. Wood continues to make a strong case as one of the better dual threat qb’s in the area. He may not be as explosive or athletic as some of the other top qb’s, but Wood flat out gets the job done and is winning. The Camels run oriented offense finished with 207 yards on the ground. Cooper QB Will Ludwig had a solid night for the Jags, finishing 18 of 27 for 245 yards passing and 2 touchdowns.

Conner 21 Ryle 7

The Cougars jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the half and extended it to 21-0 early in the 4th quarter with a Jesse McKeehan touchdown run. The Raiders were finally able to get on the board with a Grant Beagle touchdown run with 4.4 seconds left, which was set up by a long catch and run by WR Ryan Hill. Drew Barker finished 21-for-29 for 235 yards passing and 44 yards rushing for 2 touchdowns, while Ryan Romey finished as the nkysports.com player of the game with 78 yards rushing and 34 yards receiving with one touchdown. Conner improved to 2-1, while Ryle dropped to 1-3.

Covington Catholic 18 Henderson County 0

The Colonels rebounded from a 45-7 loss to Moeller, by picking up a road win over 6A Henderson County, their first loss of the season. This was the second shutout of the season for the Colonels D. Offensively, Covcath was led by Sam Hatter, who had 2 touchdowns. Sophomore Ben Darlington led the Covcath rushing attack with 76 yards on 15 carries.

Dayton 33 New Miami, OH 6

The Greendevils pulled their record even at 2-2 with a win over the Ohio squad. Dayton led 14-6 at the half but used a ground attack that included sophomore QB Dylan Adams (14 rushes, 112 yard, 3 total td’s) and junior Justin Turner to help pull away in the second half. This is a good momentum win for Dayton heading in to the BYE week.

Dixie Heights 38 Turpin, OH 7

Dixie led 14-7 after one quarter but behind the arm and legs of junior QB Drew Moore, the Colonels were able to pull away by halftime and put it in cruise mode the rest of the game. Moore was the star of the game with 123 yards rushing and 140 yards passing, which led to 4 touchdowns. Dixie racked up 398 yards of total offense with senior running back Darion Washington contributing 68 yards on 14 carries.

Fariview 62 Bellevue 50

In a surprisingly high scoring game, the Tigers dropped to 1-3 with the loss. Senior quarterback Tyler Ackerson set a school record with 381yards passing and 71 yards on the ground. Zack Poinsett (102) and Blake Stephenson (161) both had over 100 yards receiving. Hayden Swope led the defense, if you want to call it defense, with 11 tackles in the game. The two teams combined for 55 points in the 3rd quarter alone.

Holmes 27 Walton Verona 14

The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 with a home victory over the 2A Bearcats. The Bulldogs were led by Jon Scruggs (21 rushes 150 yards) and Bruce Scruggs who had a 2nd quarter 71 yard interception return for a touchdown. Junior quarterback Fred Vickers finished 8 of 9 passing for 69 yards and ran for two TDs.

Lafayette 41 Boone County 28

The Rebels remained winless and dropped to 0-4 with head coach Jeff Griffith still searching for his first win at Boone. Aaron Floyd had all 4 of the Rebels touchdowns with 3 rushing and one passing. Floyd finished the game with 166 yards rushing and also added 126 yards through the air on 17 of 29 passing.

Lloyd 34 Owen County 7

Seniors Jared Gabbard and Brian Warren combined for 4 touchdowns in the win, to pull Lloyd even at 2-2 under new head coach Eric Turner. Gabbard finished the game with 149 yards rushing.

Simon Kenton 30 Newport Central Catholic 7

It was another tough week for the Breds as they ran in to a tough Simon Kenton team and dropped to 1-3 with the Pioneers staying perfect at 4-0. Unfortunately for the Breds, their overall numbers simply don’t allow them to compete with a top 5 6A school in the state. Senior quarterback Brenan Kuntz and running back Dillon Powell continue to carry the offense. Kuntz finished 17 of 26 passing for 257 yards and 3 touchdowns with Powell racking 146 all purpose yards and a touchdown. Grant Wassom was Kuntz primary target with 7 receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown. The one positive for the Breds is playing these types of games help prepare them for 2A district play. It worked last year.

Scott 50 Newport 0

The Eagles improved to 4-0 with a win over the winless Wildcats. While Scott’s schedule hasn’t been the toughest in the area, they are taking care of business the way a good team should. Josh Castleman rushed for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 9 carries, with quarterback Ben Osborne finding Nick Wolfe in the endzone for two passing touchdowns.

Highlands 33 John Hardin 26

The Bluebirds went on the road and picked up the win, despite allowing John Hardin to cut a 33-12 4th quarter deficit to 33-26. An onside kick recovery by Zach Harris helped prevail the win. Harris finished with 123 offensive yards and 2 touchdowns with senior quarterback Drew Houliston passing for 281 yards on 21 of 29 passing. Highlands offense continues to be a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators to prepare for as Houliston fould 9 different receivers for a catch with Jensen Feggins and Brandon Hergott both being on the receiving end of a touchdown pass.

Bishop Brossart 56 Bracken County 28

The Mustangs improved to 2-1.

Ludlow, Boone County, Holy Cross , and Newport are the only winless teams left in NKY.

They could all four be in the same boat come next week as well.

Boone would be my pick to get their first win but Henry Clay has a RB that can flat out fly once he turns the corner.
