Inside the Southeastern Six Football (9-8-13)

Featured Replies

Week Two is in the books, and now we only have two teams left standing — well, I mean undefeated, after seeing Harlan County picking up its first loss of the season after falling to Belfry Friday.

Both Corbin and Knox Central remain unbeaten at 3-0 while Bell County and Williamsburg each picked up their second wins of the season and Whitley County fell to 0-3.

SOUTHEASTERN 6 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jonathan Gist, Knox Central

For the second straight week, Gist earns the top honors after running for 253 yards in the Panthers’ 28-27 win over Prestonsburg Saturday in Clay County’s Appalachian Bowl.

WEEK TWO REVIEW

Knox Central 28, Prestonsburg 27

The Panthers had to hold off a late comeback attempt by the Blackcats to pull off another close win to improve to 3-0 on the season. Jonathan Gist’s 253 yards led the way for Knox Central, as Matt Barger took things over behind center and completed seven-of-15 pass attempts while rushing for 74 yards and a score.

Corbin 55, Trimble County 6

The Redhounds didn’t waste any time improving to 3-0 on the season during their 49-point dominating win over the Raiders. Corbin took control from the start, scoring the game’s first touchdown in only four plays. Quarterback Corey Taylor and receiver Cai Jackson hooked up for two touchdowns while Taylor Waddle added a 72-yard punt return for a score in the win.

Williamsburg 48, Pike County Central 26

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 41-0 lead against the Hawks and never looked back with Pike Central scoring all of their points on the Yellow Jacket jayvee squad.

Senior quarterback Dalton Sizemore controlled the game from the get-go, passing for 197 yards and three touchdowns in the game’s first 12 minutes before finishing with an 11-of-15 effort for 261 yards and four touchdowns in only 24 minutes of action. He also ran for a touchdown in the win. Receiver Skyler Griffith had six receptions for 153 yards while Corey Shelton had four receptions for 97 yards.

Bell County 21, Whitley County 14

The Bobcats survived a scare against the winless Colonels, as Austin Caldwell’s 20-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter proved to be enough for Bell County in a 21-14 win.

Whitley County led throughout the first half before seeing the Bobcats score 14 unanswered points to pick up the win. Colonel tailback Austin Hooper was also injured during the game. He was having his way with the Bobcat defense, running for 53 yards on eight carries before the injury sidelined him late in the first quarter.

Bell County quarterback Peyton Collett completed three-of-seven pass attempts for 92 yards while Ben Collett led the Bobcats with three receptions and 92 yards. Cory Swanner led Bell County with 67 yards rushing while Caldwell finished the game with 60.

Belfry 21, Harlan County 12

The Black Bear run defense had been dominating during its first two games — each wins — but against Belfry, Harlan County didn’t have an answer.

The Pirates ran for 307 yards on the ground on 36 attempts and outscored the Black Bears 14-0 in the second half to win, 21-12.

Tom Larkey’s squad didn’t have an answer for Belfry’s running attack of Justin Johnson and Austin Hatfield. Johnson ran for 143 yards on only 10 carries while Hatfield had 93 yards on 13 carries.

Harlan County’s offense was stifled many times during the game, and finished with only 278 yards of total offense, as Carson Whitehead led the Black Bears with 63 yards rushing on 17 attempts.

Week 3 Preview

Danville (1-2) at Corbin (3-0), 7:30 p.m.

The Redhounds could get their first real test of the season when the Admirals pay a visit to Campbell Field. Make no doubt about it, Corbin seems to be a much-improved team this season.

Wayne County (3-0) at Williamsburg (2-1), 7:30 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets will enter the game as an underdog, but hasn’t lost a home game since a Class A Region Final 28-0 loss to Hazard. This game will feature two of the top quarterbacks in the state in Wayne County QB Tyler Guffey and Williamsburg signal-caller Dalton Sizemore.

Knox Central (3-0) at Harlan County (2-1), 7:30 p.m.

These two teams met in a pre-season scrimmage a month ago and the Black Bears hammered the Panthers. Now Knox Central will have to play a Harlan County team that is coming off of a loss to Belfry.

Middlesboro (2-0) at Bell County (2-1), 7:30 p.m.

The Bobcats are looking to continue their recent dominance against their rivals when the Yellow Jackets pay a visit Friday. The Bobcats have won the past two meetings by a combined score of 113-26.

Rockcastle County (0-3) at Whitley County (0-3), 7:30 p.m.

Both of these teams desperately need a win, as Whitley County is trying to avoid going 0-4 to start the season for the first time under coach Jim Black. The Colonels should be able to end the skid this week at home.
