Inside Mountain Football (8-25-13)

Featured Replies

With the first week of the 2013 football season came and gone, we saw several kind-of surprises in the first week.

- Pikeville who went (7-6) last season defeated Prestonsburg 37-20. Prestonsburg went 8-4 last season. Last time these two teams met was 2010 were Prestonsburg but a beating on Pikeville, defeating the Panthers 35-13. Prestonsburg went 10-3 that season, making it to the regional championship game were they were demolished by Corbin 48-14.

- Morgan County (8-3) came into Irvine and defeated the Engineers of Estill County (0-10) 22-13. Morgan demolished Estill 44-8 last season and return nearly everyone from that team. Estill showed improvement from a year ago where they were piled up with injuries, with this showing against a solid Morgan County team, who potentially can challenge Breathitt County for the district crown, I think it’s safe to say that Estill County is back and as long as it’s an injury free season, Estill County should win some ball games and possibly make the playoffs.

- Paris (6-6) defeated Bath County (8-3) 34-23 in the season opener for both of those teams. Game was played at Nicholas County High School, part of the Nicholas County Bowl. Some might call this an upset, even tho Paris is starting to come together after some bad seasons, Bath came off one of the school’s best seasons in school history last season. Bath also lost 18/33 players from that team, about 95% of their scoring. With everyone picking Bath County to win, I guess some could call this an upset.

- In his first season as Letcher County Central Head Coach, Mike Holcomb got his first win, demolishing Berea 47-0 in the Sports R Us Kickoff Classic at Letcher County Central High School. Mike coached at Breathitt County for 30 years racking up 272 career wins and only 94 losses along with 3 state championships. In 95-96 Mike took Breathitt back to back undefeated seasons going 30-0 during that stretch winning state titles in both of those seasons. If he stays at Letcher long enough he’ll have the Cougars back on track.

- Perry County Central who went 4-7 last season got an opening day win over visiting Clay County 21-0. Clay County defeated Perry Central 28-19 last season in Manchester, Clay went on to finish the season at 4-7.

- One streak ended and another one begin. On Friday night, Madison Southern defeated Rockcastle County 41-13 in Mt. Vernon. This was the first time in a long long time if ever that Madison Southern has defeated Rockcastle County. Madison Southern may have very well started a streak of their own against Rockcastle County.

- In what may not come as a surprise, Powell County defeated Lynn Camp 48-16 in the Pioneer Bowl @ Knox Central High School.

Not too sure about those rankings. I'd probably have Breathitt ahead of both Hazard and Pikeville, but, I could be wrong.

They'll be moved around as the season goes on. Most of those teams had their open week this week and won't start the season until next week.
