Dale McMillen resigned as Holmes softball coach Thursday after guiding the team for two seasons. The former sports radio broadcaster informed athletic director Stan Steidel of his decision two days after suffering a broken hip as the result of a fall.

 

“I had spleen removal surgery Feb. 14, and I got sick five days after I got home, and now I have this. It’s not fair to the girls,” said McMillen who had double-organ (liver and kidney) transplant surgery in 2009. “I missed 75 percent of their games this past season and they need a head coach all the time.”

 

McMillen, 70, said he was unloading building materials from a truck bed Tuesday during construction on the roof of his home when he stepped out of the truck and got his left foot caught in some tall grass. He fell on the sidewalk, landing on his left hip, and suffered a hairline fracture. He spent two hours in the hospital and is walking with the aid of crutches.

 

“I could have fell two feet either way and landed on the grass,” McMillen said. “But I landed in the middle of the sidewalk.”

 

McMillen, a Dixie Heights High School graduate and a Northern Kentucky softball advocate for more than 20 years, is well-known in the area for being a voice of Northern Kentucky prep sports events on the former WHKK-FM radio (Erlanger). He also called games for Northern Kentucky University, Thomas More College, the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University.

My daughter had the privilege of playing for Dale on one of his slowpitch teams he took to TN for the national tourney. Good man.

Did he not coach at Lloyd Memorial as well?
