Home Town Refs...love em or hate em?

Featured Replies

Thread on clock got me to thinking about this.

We all have local officials and crews that are made up of former local players and people from our communities. Easy to tell when home crowd is call refs by their name during a game :lol2:

Would you rather have a crew with some attachment to your school or team calling your game or not?

I know there are some "Homer" crews, but in my experience it is not a good thing. I have a very good friend that I graduated with 30 years ago the has been a White Hat for several years. It seems as if he goes out of his way to call anything he can against his former school. A mutual friend of ours says that he is so worried about being called a "Homer" that he goes overboard not to be one. If we are expecting a close competitive game I hate to see his crew. He tends to call a couple of games each year and we just hope that his crew doesn't get a key District Game.

A good assigner will take that into account when they can and schedule the games as best they can without home town refs. Sometimes its unavoidable.

We have a couple of local crews and the crew with my high school buddy is actual from another county, which is why we probably get him more often than not.

I have to say, I think most of our crews are as good as there are. We don't have any "Homer" refs, but the ones that from our area are great. I really appreciate them when we travel and get some inconstant calls on the roads.

It would be sad as hard as kids work at this sport to have an impartial white hat against them. I haven't seen any evidence of that locally. Seen some really bad calls, but they usually go for and against you fairly.

Unfortunately I have seen it first hand and had to deal with it with the officials crews on site (thats not a fun process) Actually had to remove an official from a game once because it was just blatant obvious "one sided calls".

Now I have seen some obvious one sided games called in basketball locally. Thats for another thread though.
