Basketball season for 2013/2014 should provide another exciting year. What should we expect from Calloway County? Remember, please be constructive.

Calloway should win the 1st this year. They return their entire team from a regional runner up finish this year. They will start 4 juniors and a senior.

 

Michael Arnett (Sr) is a powerful 6'8 post player who is strong around the rim. He has been averaging a double double on the AAU circuit this spring. Skyler Hunter (Jr) is a stretch 4 who has been averaging over 15 PPG with the Illinois Bears AAU team this spring including shooting around 40% from 3. He's probably the best shooter you haven't heard of in the state of KY.

 

Calloway will need to sure up their guard play heading into next season, but if they can accomplish that, then they should be able to dethrone Graves County and make the trip to Rupp.

They should be good the next 2 years.

This would all be correct in almost any other year. Everybody back from Regional Runner-up should be the favorite. But this year is different due to the consolidation of the McCracken schools. All three of the schools that consolidated were going to be very good in Region 1 next year. And the three guards from each school, Stonecipher, Burnett and Chumbler, were all going to be Region 1 top 10 players next year. They can all shoot and score but they are also all very smart players. Add to that what will be a very deep frontcourt with players like Rodgers, Armstrong and Weir and it is the makings of a very good high school team. They have to start the year as the Region favorites. Calloway would be 2nd.

Based on my admittedly limited knowledge, Calloway should have a huge front court advantage while McCracken has better guards.

 

And don't underestimate the growing pains that will come with forging a team out of the 3 consolidated schools.

That is probably a fair assessment. Kind of think McCracken's front court is going to be better and deeper than people think though. Armstrong is going to be a stud and looks like he has grown. Rodgers is a bulldog. On the other hand Arnett is really good. Hunter seems like he is more perimeter oriented. Should be great games.

Yes I coach Mike and Skyler in AAU and they are a really good contrast in styles.

 

Having said that and admitting my bias, Jake Williams from Graves is playing with us also and as Ric Flair said, "to be the man you've got to beat the man" and Graves should still be firmly in the mix in the 1st.

Yes, Graves will still be really good. Marshall will still have the big boy. St. Mary and Tilghman will be good too. Good year for Region 1 hoops.
