While looking through the KHSAA softball records book I didn't see anything when it came to Defense and in particular, catchers throwing out potential base stealers. NewCath catcher Kristen Schreiber, who has a "canon" for an arm, (pop times between 1.75-1,83) is throwing out runners at last years pace. I understand the KHSAA is not the Major Leagues who has a stat for everything, however I was just curious if the following numbers are just average or above average (I'm thinking above avg.)?

 

As a freshman Schreiber throw-out 16 of 29 base stealers, and so far this season she has "gunned" down 13 of 22. So in less than two seasons she has thrown out 29 of 51 for a .569 clip. So what say you? Average or above average for high school?

Impressive numbers. She is definitely a good one.

 

Im biased but I think our Catcher Freshman Gabby Stewart is pretty darn good at throwing runners out. She is 12 for 26 in the stats but some of those have been wild pitch/passed ball induced steal attempts. I know she has only given up 3 straight steals all year.

I am not a stats expert but unless the runner is already going on a wild pitch or passed ball does that count as a steal, and if not I do not think it would count against the catcher either.

Here are some pop times from the NFCA camp in CO last year. Looks like if Schreiber pop times are accurate she'd be towards the top.

A stolen base is specifically to be credited to a runner whenever she advances one base unaided by a base hit, a putout, a forceout, a fielder's choice, a passed ball, or a wild pitch. Also, If the defense makes no attempt to put the baserunner out (for example, if the catcher doesn't even look her way), the play is scored as defensive indifference (also called fielder's indifference), and no stolen base is credited to the runner.

My guess is this one is not done correctly by most score keepers.
