PARIS — The George Rogers Clark girls basketball knows it can compete with Montgomery County but can't find a way to seal the deal.

For the second time this season, the Lady Cardinals built a double-digit lead in the first half, only to falter down the stretch and come up short in a 68-52 loss to the Lady Indians in the finals of the 40th District Tournament Thursday night at Paris High School.

 

Kathleen Murphy paced the Lady Cardinals with 17 points, followed by Sandra Skinner with 14. Murphy sank three of Clark's four shots from long range and scored seven of her team's final nine points of the first quarter.

Following the hot start, Clark struggled from the field and shot 38.9 percent and committed 20 turnovers. The Lady Indians scored 25 points off those miscues, most of which came in transition.

“The shooting percentage was the biggest thing,” Graham said. “If you are missing shots and turn the ball over, it’s hard to beat anybody, especially a good team that’s experienced, that’s been there and done that. You can’t let them get back in it. You have to take the life out of them and we didn’t do that.”

Montgomery County guard Erica Rogers led all scorers with 23 points and connected on three of the Lady Indians' five shots from behind the arc. Rogers sparked Montgomery County's successful comeback attempt with three treys in the second half, including two in the third quarter.

Macie Spence added 16 and Keria Lockett chipped in with 11 for the Lady Indians.

Both squads advance to next week's 10th Region Tournament at Nicholas County High School. Pairings will be drawn Saturday morning.
