Butler 66 Pleasure Ridge Park 64 OT

Recommended Posts

Butler rallies from a 15 pt deficit in the second half to defeat PRP in OT. Sr Demetrius McReynolds led Butler with 21 pts including several big time 3's to lead the come back. Butler turned the tables on PRP with full ct pressure. I was surprised that PRP would struggle against the press. Butler has had a great week playing the top two ranked teams in the region in back to back games.

After a near-miss Tuesday, the Butler High School boys’ basketball team got the signature victory it was seeking over one of the state’s elite teams.

Demetrius McReynolds scored a game-high 21 points and Butler overcame a 15-point deficit in the third quarter to beat rival Pleasure Ridge Park 66-64 in overtime Friday at Valley’s new J.C. Cantrell Gymnasium.

The unranked Bears (3-1) lost 61-57 on Tuesday at Bullitt East, which is No. 2 in The Courier-Journal’s preseason poll of coaches, but bounced back to knock off the No. 6 Panthers (3-1).

Bears coach Shawn Purlee said he took time to evaluate his team after Tuesday’s loss.

“I wanted to see if they had hurt in their eyes, if they were satisfied with competing or if they were mad they lost,” he said. “When I recognized they were mad they lost, I thought we’d have a chance to win tonight.”

The only one that I know of is Sawyer and he played sgnificant minutes. Butler is not big size wise but they are strong, physical, and athletic. I thought that wore PRP down especially in the press. PRP didnt seem to have a go to guy down the stretch. Harris posted and had a couple good looks but looks limited down there. Wants to go to his right for a jump hook type shot and Butler did a good job pushing him out. Butler had McReynolds to go to. He took over and knocked down some huge 3's.

That will definitely help the panthers. I knew they had one playing football just wasnt sure which one. Great game and atmosphere at Valley's new gym. It was hot in there. Has potential to become a great venue for big games.

Butler and PRP traded blows early in the first quarter, and the Bears had a slim 15-12 lead after one quarter.

Then behind a strong second quarter from Bryce Byrd the Panthers outscored the Bears 20-8 in the second quarter. They took a 9 point lead, 32-23, in to the half off of a Richard Clemons buzzer beater 3.

PRP came out swinging in the 3rd, Antonio McDaniels had six quick points and the Panthers had built a 15 point lead, 43-28.

Butler then went on a 10-2 run to close the 3rd quarter, Rashawn Farrell hit two huge threes to get them going.

PRP pushed their lead back to 8 early in the 3rd. Then Demetrius McReynolds got going hitting two threes to make it 48-46 PRP.

After that it was very back and forth, PRP and Butler were trading baskets. But Butler found a way to tie it 59-59, their ball. Demetrius McReynolds drove and got fouled. He was shooting two with 10.4 seconds left. However, he missed both and a PRP buzzer beater wasn't close. To OT it went. It stayed at 59 all for the first minute and a half of OT, then PRP and Butler traded baskets making it 61 all.

Rashawn Farrell's two free throws makes it 63-61 Butler, a LaMontray Harris miss and PRP foul puts Will Johnson at the line with 56.3 seconds left. He misses both, PRP gets the rebound and a Bryce Byrd three puts them up one, 64-63. Then after a McReynolds missed shot Terry Harbin collects the rebound and his put back makes it 65-64. Antonio McDaniels takes a well defended jumper which misses and is rebounded by McReynolds. McReynoldshits 1 to make it 66-64. Bryce Byrd's buzzer beater three narrowly misses and Butler wins 66-64.

Scorers:

Butler: McReynolds 21, Bell 10, Harbin 6, Farrell 13, Johnson 12, Bradley 3 and Malone 1.

PRP: McDaniels 14, Hunter 4, Clemons 7, Byrd 18, Harris 13, Oyler 7 and Sawyer 1.

Great recap of the game. Enjoyed reading it.
