Montgomery County's Maci Spence signs

Featured Replies

MT. STERLING, Ky. — Conditioning for 2012-13 is barely under way, but fruits from early-season recruiting have allowed Lady Tiger Basketball to harvest its first recruit for 2013-14. Coach Ginger Colvin inked Montgomery County post player, Macie Spence, last Friday at MCHS.

Spence's signing assures what has turned into a habit for Campbellsville University — a Montgomery County High player on the Lady Tiger roster. Colvin has had at least one MCHS player on her roster every year of her six-year head coaching career.

"Macie is a nice addition for our program," said Colvin. "She has great size and shoots the ball well everywhere on the floor.

"Montgomery County is one of the best programs in the state year in and year out. We know that when players come from there they are prepared. It's a great tradition and they are well coached."

Spense, at 6-foot-1, has generated comparisons to former Lady Tiger, Whitney Lee, by Lady Indians Coach Janie Robinson.

"Their games are similar because of their body style," said Robinson. "Macie's not a great jumper or very fast, so she has to play a little smarter then everyone else.

"She's a great outside shooter for someone her size," continued Robinson. "She's got the softest touch of anyone I've coached."

Spence led Montgomery County (29-7) with averages of 13.2 points and seven rebounds per game as a junior. She hit 64 percent of her field goals (31 percent from 3) and 80 percent of her free throws. She was voted the Most Valuable Player of the 10th Region and was also voted the No. 1 player in the 10th Region by the 10th Region Coaches' Association.

"Basketball is my passion," Spence said. "Campbellsville is close to home and a legitimate NAIA contender. It's a great place for me because the campus is small enough that I'll always be able to find the gym."

Robinson says her player a "gym rat."

"I've known her since she was a baby," said Robinson. "She likes to compete and she's really smart."

Robinson credits Lady Tigers for the string of Lady Indians who have chosen, and continue to choose, Campbellsville.

"I tell you, when my former players return home they'll come by the gym and talk about how much fun they have down there. They're great ambassadors for the program."

Spence indicates that she wants to pursue psychology as a course of study.
