Ram's Notebook will look at match-ups for the North-Eastern Kentucky area, which includes the following teams: Boyd County, East Carter, Fairview, Lawrence County, Lewis County, Raceland, Russell, and West Carter.

Boyd County (2-1) - OPEN

Boyd County is off to one of it’s best starts in a while and with optimism for the remainder of the season will have the week off playing the formidable opponent - OPEN. The Lions will be resting up for Russell next week. Boyd County normally plays their best game of the year against Russell and historically plays the Red Devils close. With a week off to prepare, the Lions may surprise Russell next week (no not really).

East Carter (0-3) at Bath County

After starting out slow the Raiders will travel to Bath County to take on the Wildcats. After less then impressive wins over West Carter and Lewis County and loosing to Fleming County, Bath County looks to be one team that could provide the Raiders with their first win of the season. East Carter took a big hit with the loss of a starting running back before the season began, but they are a much better team then they were last season, after being 0-10, and poised to surprise some teams this season, and Bath County could be the first. If not, they do have West Carter on the schedule.

Fairview (3-0) - OPEN

Like Boyd County, Fairview will be open this week, but don’t expect them to be resting, they recently got a court injunction to allow two transfers from West Virginia to play after both being ruled ineligible by the KHSAA. So, the Eagles will be working getting those two the needed 10 practices so they can play ASAP, and Lord knows they need them after narrow wins over East Carter and Fleming County, both teams they should have beaten easily if they plan to go deep in the playoffs.

Lawrence County (2-1) vs. Perry County Central

Coming off of a big last minute win Lawrence County is feeling like the Dawgs of old. And from comparing scores of common opponents it looks like the Bulldogs will look even better after this week. Lawrence County is on a roll and Perry County Central is on a slide, starting the season 0-3. Look for the Dawg fans to be celebrating another week.

Lewis County (0-3) at Powell County

The Lions are starting off a little rough this season. Will it get better? This will have to be the week if it is going to get better. After this week it is quite possible the Lions will not win a game until they play West Carter late in the season. How about Powell County? Well, they are not starting the season much better then Lewis County and I don’t think it will get any better this week.

Raceland (2-1) vs Greenup County (0-2)

They call the Russell/Greenup County game the “Backyard Brawl” with the teams being about 12 miles apart, so the Raceland/Greenup County must be the “Front Yard Brawl” seeing how the two schools are about 10 miles apart. The Muskateers have made the series interesting winning a few games in the last five years, but it looks more like business as usual for Raceland. Greenup County is not starting the season well, and Raceland looks to be as strong as ever with a pretty balanced attack that is proving to be a tough match up for most area teams. Greenup County went 0 for 2011 and it looks like they may duplicate that record in 2012.

Russell (1-1) at Ashland (3-0)

The Red Devils are coming off a beat down by Ironton, Ohio and the Tomcats are high on cat kip after beating what is believed to be the best team in West Virginia. Russell is a little better then I expected after hiring assistant coach Lee Evans, who brought his 6’5 Quarterback son with him, but they just don’t have the fire power to beat Ashland this year. Ashland is looking like the District Champions for 2012 and will win the right to possible win one playoff game versus their Northern Kentucky sister district.

West Carter (0-3) vs. Magoffin County

West Carter will have to work and have some luck to win any games this year. Will they be able to do it this week? Well, it will take some of that luck for anyone including me to pick them to win. Coach Brown is a great guy and I’m sure the Comet players deserve a win, but 2012 is just going to be a huge up hill battle for them.

You can't say you were "wrong", it was just a "set back" and you will do better next time. lol

 

The Lawrence County game really surprised me. I honestly expected a Lawrence County win. I guess that is why the play the game.
