What started out as a blow-out turned into a real close one. The rollercoaster that is defense for NewCath rears it's ugly head.

 

The Breds start the game with 4 straight hits off Highlands starting pitcher Karly Hamberg and score 3. After the 7th batter Hamberg was replaced with Woodford County transfer Paige Leighty who K's the next two with the bases loaded to stop the bleeding. Highlands plates 1 in the first to make it a 3-1 game. In the 2nd the Breds score 4 more to take a 7-1 lead. Highlands plates 1 in the bottom of the 4th, and through 4 it's 7-2 Breds. The NewCath defense to this point commit 2 errors, but do not hurt them and freshman pitcher Sarah Neace is cruising along, but that's about to change.

 

In the top of the 5th the Breds score 3 and take what looked like a comfortable 10-2 lead. In the Birds half of the 5th things start off with a pop out to 1st, a single, another pop out to 1st, and another single....two on and two out. Then the wheels fall off the bus. A slow roller off the bat of Carly Hebel back to Neace is booted, an error by shortstop Michaela Ware, two walks, another error at short, and another walk and Highlands scores 5 and the bases are still loaded. As a side note the rain has started to fall. Taylor Burkart is brought in to replace Neace and is greeted by freshman catcher Whitney Quillen's 2nd hit of the inning that scores 2, however Burkart induces Sr. Brook Hollingsworth to ground harmlessly to Casey Kohls at 2nd who tosses onto 1st to end the inning with score NewCath 10-9. Unfortunatly by now the rain is picking up and as NewCath's first batter of the 6th walks to the plate the continuing rain and the rumble of thunder ends the game and the rest of the Tourney.

 

Highlands was led by Quillen who was 3-4 and 8th grader Shelby Graybill who was 2-3. The Breds were led by Sr. Meghan Millard (2-4), Sr. Rachel Hardesty (2-4, 2RBI), Fr. Casey Kohls (2-4 (double & triple), 2RBI), & So. Taylor Burkart (1-2, 2RBI).

No, most teams are not allowed to play on Sundays plus with all the rain it will be still too wet tomorrow. I would love to find out the score of Notre Dame and Simon Kenton. They were to play on Bartlett Field, however it was still too wet after the delay so they loaded up the buses and headed to Simon Kenton to play the game. If anyone has a score pleasse post.

They did not finish an inning when we had to cancel due to heavy rain. Were still in the top of first and pitcher was having hard time hanging onto the ball. It was raining before the first pitch was thrown.

 

Was not worth the time driving to SK but everyone tried to get a game in. SK's field is looking good, very well taken care of.
