Newport Catholic 9 Reading, OH 7 (Bat Wars Tourney)

Recommended Posts

The Breds hitting and defense and another nice outing from Taylor Burkart produce a 9-7 victory in the Bat Wars Tourney at Bartlett Field tonight. Burkart goes 5 innings and allows 3 runs on 3 hits with 2 K's.

The Breds score 1 in the top of the 2nd and hold that lead till the bottom of the 3rd when Reading,OH scores 3. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, by way of 2 hit batsmen and a walk, a single to center that was booted clears the bases. Breds score 1 more in the 4th and take the lead for good in the 5th with 3 runs, the last coming off the bat of freshman catcher Kristen Schreiber who hits an absolute "bomb" that one hops the 235 sign in left and goes for a triple. In the top of the 6th the Breds plate 2 more, however senior rightfielder Meghan Millard was caught stealing and takes a blow to the head and in the process has to leave the game.

The Breds take the field in the bottom half of the 6th with a 7-3 lead and freshman Sarah Neace on the mound and Taylor Burkart in right. Reading, OH scores 2 in the 6th as Neace K's the first batter but walks the next two. A wild pitch moves the runners up but she K's the next batter. However the next Reading hitter lines a single to center to make the score 7-5. The top of the 7th sees the Breds score 2 on a two-out single by senior Hannah Jones. The reading bottom half of the 7th starts very promising with 2 straight singles and walk to load the bases. Neace gets the next two via the k, but the next batter singles to plate 2 and make it 9-7. The final batter then hits a one hopper to freshman third baseman Loren Zimmerman who steps on third for the force and that's your ballgame.

The Breds hitting attack was led by freshman shortstop Michaela Ware who went 4-4 including a triple and freshman second baseman Casey Kohls 2-3. Again these two young ladies play yet another game of stellar defense going 12 of 12 in total chances.
