April 6, 201214 yr Preview The stakes will be a good bit lower, but the intensity level likely won't be. When the Cardinals and Brewers play on Friday -- their first meeting since last year's hard-fought National League Championship Series -- they won't be playing for a pennant, but they will be setting the stage for what should be an entertaining NL Central race. Miller Park will be festooned with bunting, and all the usual pageantry will be on display. This one doesn't need any of it, though. A race that figures to be one of baseball's most wide-open gets rolling early. The game begins a stretch of 27 straight divisional games for the defending World Series champion Cards, including six head-to-head April meetings with the Brewers. MILWAUKEE -- Playing spoiler in another team's season opener, the Cardinals teed off against Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo early and often Friday en route to an 11-5 win that featured home runs by four different St. Louis players. All four of those homers came before Gallardo could record his seventh out of the game, and they hushed a sellout crowd of 46,086 fans in much the same way the Cardinals did during their last visit to Miller Park. That, of course, was on Oct. 16, 2011, when St. Louis clinched the pennant with a six-run win over the National League Central champs. MLB.com Gameday | cardinals.com: Gameday
April 7, 201214 yr Author MILWAUKEE • Back at the same place they left the Milwaukee Brewers last October, the Cardinals showed their rivals what was true last autumn still holds for this April. The Cardinals' new-look lineup strafed Milwaukee with 16 hits Friday and an 11-5 rout, their second decisive victory in an opponent's season opener in as many games.
