  3. For Immediate Release May 8, 2008 Patriot Baseball Wraps Up Season at Region XI Tourney On Wednesday May 7th the University of the Cumberlands baseball team took on Trevecca Nazarene in the NAIA Region XI Tournament elimination game. Trevecca’s bats started hot and would stay that way throughout the day with the final score being 14-5. With this loss the Patriots were eliminated from the Region XI Tournament. Even know this was a disappointment for the Patriots they still had a great season with 43 wins and 17 losses. The Patriots were ranked in the NAIA National Poll for most of the year and in the final NAIA Coaches Poll the Patriots were ranked #7. Leading hitters for the Patriots against Trevecca Nazarene were: Senior Trevor Urbanick (Conneautville, PA) was 2 for 5 with two singles and a stolen base, senior Javier Gali (Corozal, PR) was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 homeruns with 3 RBI. "Our performance in the regional tournament was disappointing, but it won't overshadow the great season we had,” stated Patriot Head Coach Brad Shelton. “Our team, led by a great group of seniors, battled injuries and adversity the entire season. We put together one of the most successful seasons (in terms of wins) in school history. We were also able to win another Mid-South Conference Championship. Most importantly, our players represented our school well. This team is the classiest group of individuals I have ever been around. I want to thank our seniors for their dedication and hard work. I know they all have successful futures ahead of them." 4. For Immediate Release May 6, 2008 Patriots Rack in Region Honors - Fall in Opening Play The University of the Cumberlands baseball Patriots traveled to Lebanon, TN to participate in the Region XI Tournament held May 6-9, 2008. The Patriots, earning the #1 overall seed, first round opponent was Martin Methodist University from the Trans South Conference. Things started off well for the Patriots as they scored an unearned run in the first after Drew Denton (Hendersonville, TN) reached on an error, moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt, and scored on a Robert Mills (Las Vegas, NV) sacrifice fly. Unfortunately that would be the only highlight of the day for the Patriots. In the bottom of the first UC’s ace Adam Blakey (Jamestown, KY) suffered an injury and had to leave the game after only recording one out. Seniors Chris Short (Willwood, MO) and Brooks Morgan (Lexington, KY) relieved Blakey but were unable to slow the RedHawks bats. The Patriots suffered a 12-1 setback in the double elimination tournament. On Monday, however, at the Regional coaches meeting, several Patriots were recognized for their outstanding seasons. Drew Denton, Robert Mills and Trevor Urbanick (Conneautville, PA) were named to the All-Region Team. Urbanick, a senior who was recently honored as the Mid-South Conference Player of the Year, was named the Region XI Player of the Year as well. The NAIA and Rawlings have teamed up to honor student-athletes for their exceptional play on the field, by honoring the most outstanding players with the Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Cumberlands Denton and sophomore pitcher Brandon Williams (Ashland, KY) were named to the Rawlings Gold Glove team as representatives of Region XI. The Patriots will play tomorrow at 11 am against #2 seed Trevecca Nazarene in an elimination game. 11. I made the trip to Pippa Passes today to see Alice Lloyd and Univ of the Cumberlands play. UC won the varsity game but came I away with a positive impression of the ALC team and the program. They are a scrappy team and seem like a good bunch of young men. Good luck ALC as you complete your 2008 schedule.:thumb:
