  1. This is 2011 not 07,08,09 and 10.. CovCath will be a challenge for the Birds no doubt..I look for this to be a very good game..

I am missing something or wasn't last year's game a challenge for them? 27 -20 with CovCath having a chance to tie or win as time expired.

I don't know if CovCath has what it takes to beat Highlands or not. I think tomorrow will give us a real indication of that. I do know that Highlands was challenged last year, and that the disparity in talent is not what it was during the 07 and 08 seasons. Highlands (rightfully so) is the overwhelming favorite in just about every game they play against NKY teams. However, I don't think the gap between CovCath and Highlands is nearly as wide as some may think. A big part of Highlands success is the doubt that their opponents have about being able to compete with them. I think Ryle showed last year, once that hurdle is overcome you can play your game and your don't have to play a perfect game to compete. I think after last year's game CovCath believes they can compete and win if they play to their ability.

  2. How was it that the game was the first verbal comittment between the two teams and it was broken by Cov? The comitt was there before they played their game last season.

If CovCath was going to "drop" a team, it would have been La Salle. When the re-districting came about everyone's schedules were messed up. If CovCath were so afraid of Ryle why would they play them in a scrimmage? I know that CovCath as well as many other schools had to scramble to revamp their schedules with the new districts. Because there were scheduling problems surely does not mean CovCath was "afraid" of Ryle. I thought that Ryle was trying to upgrade their schedule and picked up Colerain for their 3rd game very early last year?

Whether or not Ryle should be ranked above CovCath is a legitimate argument, stating CovCath (who year in year out plays a brutal schedule) was ducking Ryle because the past two years outcome is ridiculous.

  3. As an NCC alum, I am a bit surprised that based on the circumstances surrounding the transfer, that he was allowed to play sports. I understand accepting the Student into the school, I understand 2nd chances, but it is not like he was a year removed from the incident. He was sentenced in February, and played baseball games in March. Would NCC have allowed a player already on the team, with a similar charge, to play in the season? If so then things have significantly changed up on the hill. I hope that they were not aware of the detail circumstances.

  4. "On the other hand, CCH seems to have moved some of their better sophomores straight up to varsity so perhaps that talent from the past two years isn't playing JV ball."

No doubt some of that talented Sophomore class is playing with the varsity, but that is no excuse for the loss. CovCath was playing well, and Dixie was struggling early in this one. CovCath had a chance to go up 2 scores early, but failed to score inside the Red Zone. Dixie became revitalized and it was back and forth the rest of the game. I was very impressed by attitude and the exhuberance that the Dixie squad showed. In contrast CovCath acted as if they were entitled to the win. There were some very nice individual performances, but as a whole the CovCath squad played very uninspired. Congrats to Dixie, I hope CovCath rebounds and plays with more passion next week.

  5. Roster has Cleves at #20 and that's what we were going off of in the booth during the game.

He is playing now, FB1 meant he hasn't played since his Freshman season. He is a senior, but not with the experience level of a typical senior. He is a great athlete and played well for the most part, but not a "seasoned" veteran like Reese.

  6. Covington Catholic beat Lex. Catholic convincingly last year and have most of there key starters back. Another useless preseason article. Kyle Bolin better be able to play QB, play defense and block for himself.

While I agree that I believe CovCath should be ranked equal to or higher than LexCath, CovCath actually lost a good deal to Graduation. They lost 7 starters on Defense including all 4 DB's, the top 2 leading tacklers and interception leader. On offense they lost the leading rusher and the top 3 receivers. All three of which scored against LexCath.

  7. A week before your first game is not the time for experiments. What you see in this one will be very similar to next week's regular season game with your starters attempting to get in sync. You may tweak a few things before next week, but that's about it. If this was being played 3 weeks ago, you would have time to toy around.

If I'm not mistaken this will be approached like a regular season game with the scoreboard, clock etc operating as usual.

While I agree that you need to prepare for the openning of the season, I disagree that just because it is being played in game like situation you will play it like a real game. I agree with Clyde, both teams will be working on things tonight. I don't think you will see Elliot carry it 30 times, nor do I think you will see Gabe Gray carry 20 times tonight. Two things I believe you will see a bunch during the regular season, especially district games. I doubt very much that the game planning for the scrimmage is anywhere near what it is for a real game. As a result I think you will see 1/2 to 3/4 of the scrimmage being devoted to playing it like a game, with the remainder being used as a vehicle to answer questions about depth or other parts of your game.

  8. Fan, if your prediction is correct then it will be a long year for both teams.

Define long year? What if Ryle has re-tooled and are a caliber similar to last year? What if CovCath's defense has significantly improved it's ability to stop the run? While I'll admit those are both BIG if's, I think a close scrimmage does not mean that both teams will have long years. I could see both schools playing tight in a scrimmage, and still have very successful seasons.

If you define long years as not being able to beat Highlands or win the state champinships then the vast majority of KY High school teams will have very long years.

  9. McKnick lost a ton to graduation. Last year was one of their best seasons in school history. They have a new head Coach, new QB and have to replace a good portion of their defense. I would expect them to be a little suggish out of the gate. Not that they are not a quality opponent, they just may not be as polished at this time of the year as they have been in years past.

  10. Hopefully your post was not made because you interpreted my post as being critical of Bir. I intended nothing close to such. I'm very high on Bir and expect him to be one of the best QBs in the state this and next year. Since Black Eagle made the comparison and assessment that Bir was the more accurate passer, I thought some stats might be meaningful. But as you pointed out, Bir's stats could have been even better but for the dropped passes. Without going back and watching the game film, I can't say if Towles also suffered the same fate.

Didn't interpret it as a criticism at all, I was just giving my view as to Blake's numbers. Blake made such huge strides from the Ryle game to where he was at the end of the year. He had two series in the 2nd half of the JC game where he wasn't at his best, accounting for 4 of the incompletions he had, unfortunately those two series were critical in the outcome of the game. To counter that I wanted to be fair to Blake and mention that the drops were equally if not more critcal to the outcome of the game.

I expect big things out of Blake the next two years, the fact that he is being mentioned in conversations with Towles and the other top qb's in the state I think is fantastic.

  11. You are correct about Towles running more than passing against JC, but barely. Towles had 18 rushing attempts for 60 yds. He was 9 of 16 passing for 152 yards (for approx 17 yds per completion). While he had more rushing attempts than passing, the passes yielded more than twice the yards however.

Bir was 20 of 42 against JC for 210 yards (for approx 10.5 yds per completion), but I do agree with you that Bir is a very fine QB.

The JC game was not Blakes best. Having said that he was a victim of at least 3 drops, two of which were probable TD's another at least a 40 yard gain. The reality is for Bir to be considered with Towles is quite an honor. I expect Blake to have a great Junior season, but Towles is a 2 time state champ who has verbally committed to UK. I think Blake would be happy to be considered in that company.

  12. No matter how you spin this, this is a very impressive endorsement. There is no such thing as a sure thing recruit or sure thing rookie QB in the NFL for that matter. However, when you perform as well as Zeke did at a camp like this, and gets praise for his on the field and off the field actions, you have to be impressed.

I realize Zeke has many detractors, some of it deserved, however a rational person has to be impressed with this type of recognition. It literally puts him in the top 1 percent of HS football players graduating in 2012. No matter what that's impressive.

  13. Another Cincinnati school. They apparently can't get anyone else in NKY to play them, outside of Cov Cath 2x and Ryle 2x.

It is a shame that this has to happen. I think it is a result of the New 4a in NKY. In the past teams like Holmes, Pendelton and sometimes Harrison have struggled playing JV schedules. It appears that maybe the case again this year. I believe CovCath is playing Cincinnati St. X in place of one of those games, in addition to the 2nd match up with Highlands.

  14. Guess I am not the only one that knows SK will be good! Kuntz throws some great passes in the video he will probably end up starting at QB so Pinkleton can play on defense.

    http://www.wlwt.com/video/28599258/detail.html

I think that would be the best scenario for SK to have a chance in 6a. Mr. Pinkleton is an outstanding athlete, and is a premier defensive back. At QB he is an athlete playing qb. Kuntz looked much more comfortable during the 7 on 7 I saw. He made the reads quicker and he was much more accurate. If Kuntz can win the starting QB position, and keep Pinkleton on D, SK will be better off. I think it will be their defense that will determine the future this year. The offense can keep them in games and may have flashes of brilliances, but I don't think SK can/will make a habit of out scoring folks this year.

  15. Both NKY's qb's are doing very well at the Elite 11 QB camp.

Pike finished yesterday ranked 5th and Towles was ranked 12th out of the 24 QB's at the camp. Both players have been interviewed about the camp, and both come off very impressive in their moments in the sun.

The analysis from the "expert" was really very consistent with what I have seen of the two. He said that Pike was a "gamer" and showed much better in the 7 on 7 competition vs the drills, and that Towles wasn't spectacular in any one thing, but was good in about everything. He was excellent in his check down reads.

It's pretty amazing that both of these QB's from NKY are gaining such national exposure. This type of thing doesn't happen that often in NKY.
