  1. Carried his team to a 15 point loss. 8 TO's it's no secret he is careless with the ball he has been that way since he was a freshman in high school. 32 isn't all that impressive when it takes you 27 shots to get it.

Exhibit A. This is too easy.:thumb:

  2. As a bit of an olive branch to Golden Gopher, I am going to say that Matt Thomas is the best senior in the region. In my mind, there is no doubt about it. He is a very deserving young man.

However, in the spirit of honesty and at the risk of bending the olive branch, I have to add that there is no way by any stretch of partisan imagination that Bonner is a top ten player. Coleman may contribute more to the maroonies than will Bonner. Bonner will miss the bumping and shoving of McDavid.

  3. Boy, these posts are completely expected and true to form. Lots of backhanded, and fronthanded, cuts at Mayo.

Mayo scored 32 points in his college debut. He made mistakes but, then, he is actually human. On the other hand, he carried his team and demonstrated that, as expected, he will be a PTPer immediately in college- much unlike the partisan posters's personal favorites.

Mayo has many in the northeast area of the state who root for him. He has at least as many who have never gotten over their jealousy and envy and who continue to root for his failure. Being an outspoken member of the former group, I enjoy all the whining. Go for it.

  4. Lexington Christian Eagles

    Playoff Appearances: 5

    All-time Record: 5-4

    Raceland Rams

    Playoff Appearances: 26

    All-time Record: 7-25

    Previous Playoff Meetings

    2006 - Raceland 20 Lexington Christian 13

***I didn't see a thread on this game; if there is, please merge***

The previous playoff meeting score is irrelevant. What was the score when they played this season? I believe it was LCA 42 Raceland 7.

  5. As a long distance fan of CovCath, I used the link to listen to the game on the radio. After about seven minutes of babbling with no mention of the score, I gave up. These guys are miserable. At least, from BGP, I found out that CovCath is ahead with less than seven minutes left.

If I didn't appreciate Dickie Martin before I sure do now.

  6. The best coach in the region will undoubtedly be the one who has the most talent that performs to its capabilities. With very few exceptions, it is the successful performance of talented players that makes a coach look brilliant. If the talent and personal motivation of the players is sufficient, the coach can roll out a ball and retire to the teachers's lounge for a nice Diet Pepsi and a nap.

  7. I would agree with Fastbreak that there is a lot of passion in the 16th Region. Those associated with a particular school passionately support their favorites. No doubt about it. However, I believe an equally present ingredient in the mix is that many passionately dislike some of their neighboring schools. To put it another way, there is not a high level of love in the 16th Region. There is, in many cases, even less trust and respect.

So, why do so many 16th Region threads get closed down? Undoubtedly, it is passion of one kind or another. And, this passion is not limited to BGP by any stretch of the imagination.

The 16th Region is not likely to host a "family picnic".

  8. I don't think its really a state tournament its more like A.A.U. where you pay to play.

Actually not. The teams are school teams and the event is considered by most to be the middle school state tournament. Nothing else would remotely qualify since it features 28 of the top teams from all over the state. Possibly if Ashland ever entered such tournaments, you would feel differently. Participation sure couldn't hurt your programs- boys and girls.

  9. Long time reader, first time poster. I usually peek in here every so often for a good chuckle. You guys seldom disappoint.

This thread is about the Top 10 players in the 16th Region. That has nothing to do with the teams they’re on or spaceships to Mars…

No one with any sense can argue that Elliott enters the season at the TEAM to beat until somebody steps up and proves otherwise. But as far as individual players go, if we look at facts, not emotions Dakotah Euton and Chad Jackson have to be considered the top two players in the 16th region.

Euton is a legitimate 6’ 8” 225 pounds. He was recruited by Florida, Duke, Indiana, UCLA, Uconn, Louisville, Texas and Kentucky as a freshman. He has committed to Kentucky as a sophomore. That’s a big as it gets in this state.

Jackson is over 6’ 4” and around 190 pounds. He is currently being recruited by Kentucky, Louisville, Kansas, North Carolina, Indiana, WVU, and many others. He will play major division one ball somewhere with a regular season television broadcast schedule. Contrary to popular belief, he does have an accurate outside jumper that will give opponents fits.

Both can throw down with both hands, and play above the rim. Whether Euton or Jackson is the better recruit depends upon what a coach is looking for… big and strong with a silky stroke from 30 feet in, or lightning quick with unbelievable hands and athleticism.

Ethan Faulkner, Jonathan Ferguson, Evan Faulkner and Matt Thomas are very good players and even better young men. All have a very good chance of playing basketball at the college level, but whether that will be Major, Mid or Small DI, DII, DIII or NAIA remains to be seen. Beyond these six, there are several promising young players with DI potential, but you’re just throwing darts to say who will finish where.

    1. Dakotah Euton / Chad Jackson

    3. Ethan Faulkner / Jonathan Ferguson

    5. Matt Thomas

    6. Evan Faulkner

Excellent analysis from a first time poster.

  10. Put Matt Thomas on the space shuttle, send him to Mars, and he would be the best player on the entire planet. This attempt at an analogy makes no sense. If Santa Clause was President we wouldn't be at war and everyday would be Christmas. But guess what? He's not, and Matt Thomas doesn't play for Russell or Elliott. :thumb:

Sorry, Golden Gopher. I merely intended to state the obvious. I didn't intend to hit a raw nerve. Sometimes the truth is uncomfortable.

  11. The Boyd Co. teams of 90"s. Especially the 94 team that got beat in the quarterfinals by 2 or 3 to Dunbar. If it had not been for a questionable charge call they should have won that game. Dunbar goes on to get beat by Faidale in the championship by 2 or 3. That team was easily a top 5 in the state and considered a tournament favorite behind Dunbar and Faidale. I know they won over 30 games that year.

That 1994 Boyd County team was a fine team. It was probably the best team in the region during that decade.

  12. AHS (not PGB) had a rich tradition as did CCNY, LIU, and NYU in basketball and Army, Navy, and Lehigh in football. However, times change and they certainly have in this area. Those who controlled mainly because they were bigger than everyone else and had cooperative local employers have now lost those advantages.

Put Matt Thomas on Elliott County or Rose Hill and he would be all state. Of course, if he had played football at Russell, he would also be all state. Too bad but you have to have talent around you in order to get recognition. Nonetheless, he will still be a top player in the region.

  13. Kentucky loses to Gardner Webb. Coach Rupp wouldn't have played Gardner and the whole Webb family. You play teams like this and you pay the price.

Blame Smith if you choose. However, no decent basketball team with any quality of coaching gets cleaned by Gardner Webb on its home court. Blaming Smith for Gillespie's loss is not being honest. But, then, UK fans were never known for their honesty.

And, in the meantime, UK is the laughing stock of college basketball- again. At least the next Webb family reunion will be festive.

  14. Correct me if I'm wrong I thought this forum was about the top PLAYERS in the region this year.

You are correct. I believe the point has been proven in this sidebar so we should return to the original subject. I'm sure Golden Gopher agrees and appreciates the rescue effort of his/her fellow Ashland advocate. Ashland is fortunate to have him/her and his/her blind faith and support. Whether right or wrong, he/she is loyal to the effort. I applaud him/her.

As for the top players, I would put Matt Thomas near the top. If he were playing on a more talented team, he would probably be the top player in the region. He would excel at Elliott County or Rose Hill were others could carry much of the load.

  15. KHSAA records, has Paul Blazer as winning.

    http://www.khsaa.org/records/basketball/boyspastwinners.pdf

I was not aware that KHSAA listings of records was infallible. If that is the case, why isn't Rowan County listed since Breckenridge Training no longer exists and those students were absorbed into Rowan County? Also, why is Clark County's championship listed as Clark County instead of George Rogers Clark High School? Inez was consolidated into Sheldon Clark so Sheldon Clark should be listed. Thyere are many others but this should suffice to make the point.

It goes for all or it goes for none. Thus, I still conclude that Blazer hasn't won squat.

  16. Kentucky got thumped by Gardner Webb. I don't care if the pledges of the Sigma Chi Fraternity at UK played for the Wildcats, Kentucky does not lose to the likes of Gardner Webb. This is a disgrace and there is no excuse for it. Put the blame on whomever you choose but the buck stops with the coaching staff. A kindergarten student should be able to coach Kentucky to victory against Gardner Webb. This is terrible.

  17. Hmmm let me see. Would I rather my team be highly regarded in the state nationally and then exit the sweet 16 in the 2nd round. Which by the way preceeded the mass exodus at RH. Or be huge underdog, upset the 24th ranked team in the nation (Paducah Tilghman) in the first round on an unbelievable run to the state finals. Tell me any other team or school for that matter in the 16th that has come REMOTELY close to sniffing Saturday in the last 10 or 15 years, much less make it to the state finals. Honestly has any other school in the 16th won the sweet 16? I dont know.....

Breckenridge Training won in 1946. You don't want to leave them out, do you?

Remotely close? How about the 2006 Rose Hill girls. I feel sure that you both supported them and remember them.;)

Championship? Well, it could be said that, if you are referring to Blazer rather than the "old days" of Ashland High School, the only state championship in the last forty years was won by the West Carter girls. If you want to get ancient about it, Clark County was a member of the 16th Region for a long time. The Cardinals won the state championship in 1951. Not as recent as 1961 maybe but somewhat more recent than the 1930s.
