  1. For the incoming Senior class at St. Henry it's a tough day. They will be playing for their 3rd varsity head coach in 4 years. That's no way to build a program.

It will be interesting to see what St. Henry's search yields this time. After Jeff Hans left in '06, there apparently was not much interest in the position. Hopefully for the girls' sake, there will be some strong candidates to choose from this time.

Seems to be a trend -- Holy Cross' seniors will also be playing for their 3rd varsity head coach (and completely different JV/Assistants) in 4 years, although the team feels very fortunate to have snagged Coach Hans -- should be an interesting year around the 9th region

HC will actually be playing for their 3rd coach in three years, but overall that program has enjoyed a lot more stability and success over the recent years than what St. Henry can claim. I believe St. Henry can only claim one winning season this decade. I agree that it should be a very interesting season in '08 / '09.

  2. The new coach will have to preach defense and discipline. This has been lacking the last couple of years. In watching them play a few times it appeared opposing teams were pretty much able to do whatever they wanted on offense and decision making didn't seem to improve much throughout the seasons.

  3. If she is also going to Cooper to teach I would have to believe she will get a significant pay increase over what she could ever make at St Henry. Based upon the talent that St Henry has coming back for the next couple years this would be a good job for someone to get.

As for Cooper this another questionable hire if you were to base it on wins and loses. I don't believe that Coach Turner had a winning record at St Henry nor did the football coach that they recently hired.

She is going to be teaching at Cooper. I've been told she will be teaching in the Special Education field, and she would not have been afforded that opportunity at St. Henry. She only taught part-time at St. Henry. I'm not sure if that is the plan for Cooper. Her St. Henry teams had a combined record of 18 wins and 34 losses in her two years.

  4. Good Luck to Coach Turner at Cooper. She will have her work cut out for her there, in that she will be starting from scratch. For the incoming Senior class at St. Henry it's a tough day. They will be playing for their 3rd varsity head coach in 4 years. That's no way to build a program.

  5. NDA had several defensive breakdowns especially in the paint and under the basket. Conner was simply beating them to the basket and IMO the NDA coach never made any adjustments. Why did she wait until the last 2 minutes of the game to try and press? Congrats to Conner and good luck in Bowling Green.

I was curious about the lack of pressure in the 2nd half as well. I didn't think they were in too deep of foul trouble for most of the half. It didn't help though that except for Jackson, Notre Dame shot a terrible percentage for the 2nd half. Hard to press when you're not making shots. When NDA pressured the ball 3/4 court it really slowed Conner's offense and it created some turnovers. There were several times when Conner picked up their dribble on the sideline and in the corner. Notre Dame got the turnover on almost every occasion. When NDA went away from the pressure, it allowed Conner to speed up the game and they were able to go wherever they wanted with the ball. Long, Beasley and Haynes had several layups in the 2nd half. Too many shots in the paint in the 2nd half. A great season though for NDA. Three straight Regional Final appearances speaks for itself. Good Luck to the Lady Cougars in Bowling Green.

  6. Ryle may be hitting thier stride at the right time, could be a tough out for the Crusaders in the 33rd.

Ryle gave St. Henry their one district loss (48-46) this season. St. Henry won their two other district games by 1 point each. I don't think the Crusaders are expecting any "gimme" games next week. I would expect the Ryle / St. Henry rematch to be just as tight as the first game.

  7. How about the Covington Catholic and Holy Cross teams of the late 1970's. You had the best 3 teams in one district.

Holmes ---- Schloemer, Jones, Meyer, Wimzie, Behle, Walton

CovCath ---- Rechtin, Macke, Mohr, Duncan, Zembrodt

Holy Cross --- List, Erledge, Lonneman, Fortner

Those were some intense rivaries and great basketball games!!

Holmes would have had Dicky Beal in the 70's and '80. CovCath had Jimmy Behle in the late 70's

  8. I have seen Bishop Brossart, St. Henry, LexChristian, Paintsville and June Buchanan play and have read and heard alot about Gallatin County as a co-worker newphew plays for them. JB, with the Step brothers and Cox (if they are on) will be a tough match-up for any team on this list, followed by UHA (which I haven't seen). My dark horse is Ninth Region St. Henry. Faust is one of the best coaches in the state, and always seems to get his players up and ready for this tourney. If they (St. Henry) can get past UHA in the first round, they could meet up with JB in the finals.... Looks like to me at least, JB should have no problem in the bottome bracket and again to me at least, the upper bracket is the tougher of the two brackets.

You can be sure that Faust will have a terrific game plan in place for UHA. Whether his boys can execute remains to be seen. His 2003 team won the All "A" state title and was the only team to give Mason Co. a game (2 point loss) in the Sweet 16 that year. If it weren't for losing his center to a knee injury during the game, they would have knocked out Mason Co. Coach Faust does well in big games. He will have his team ready!

  9. Doesn't this sew the #1 seed up for St. Henry? Best Boone can finish in the district is 2-1 now, and St. Henry won their only head-to-head matchup this season.

I believe Boone still has to play both Conner & Ryle one more time. I think they've already played both, but I don't think they counted towards district seeding. If Boone wins both of those games, I believe St. Henry would get #1 based on head to head with Boone. If Boone loses to Ryle and beats Conner, I believe Ryle would get #1 because they beat St. Henry head to head. If Boone beats Ryle but loses to Conner, I believe St. Henry would still get #1 because they beat Conner head to head.

  10. Good game. Boone was outplayed. St. Henry was on fire from the field and must have shot 95% from the free throw line, whereas Boone was 12-28 on free throws! Boone came back from about 13 down in the 4th and looked to score the go-ahead basket with about 30 seconds left when Popp drove and scored. One ref called a foul, the other called a walk and waived it off. Krohman hit a deep 3 to tie the game with about 20 seconds. St. Henry was fouled shooting a 3 with 1 second left and made 1 of 3 free throws to win. As bad and inconsistent as the officiating was, especially against Boone, Boone has nobody to blame but themselves for not making more free throws. I would say Boone has to drop back to 3rd in the region with this loss.

Unbelievable! St. Henry is a grand total of 3 points away from being undefeated in the district and getting the #1 seed. They are also a grand total of 4 points away from going winless in district play and getting the #4 seed. The #1 seed is still up for grabs, but Boone County is still the team to beat come tournament time.

  11. I just read the notice about Coach Sorrel's daughter in the paper. My heart goes out to Coach and his family. I was using it as a 'learning lesson" for my son, who is a new driver, about the dangers of icy roads. Then I put 2+2 together about the CC connection. Beautiful girl with apparently a beautiful way with people. Parents: Hug your children...everyday! Did Coach Sorrel play for Dixie back in the 70's?

Coach Sorrell played for CCH and is a 1975 graduate.

  12. Ludlow started off the game with Ashley Daugherty shooting (and making) two technical foul shots as a result of St. Henry not having all of their starters designated properly in the scorebook. St. Henry played catch up for the rest of the game. The first half was a full court game with both teams pressing and as a result the half time score was 40-36 in Ludlow's favor. The 2nd half was more of a half court game and hence the final score of 56-55. St. Henry was able to answer Ludlow's scoring bursts, but could never get the lead. St. Henry had a 15 foot baseline jumper with approximately 4 seconds to go, but it was off the mark. The game was poorly officiated from both teams perspective. Ashley Daugherty was definitely the difference maker for Ludlow. She was unstoppable down low. If St. Henry had shot a decent percentage on their foul shots, they could have won the game.
