  1. McCreary had an easy time defeating Somerset tonight. Somerset’s last two games were against the top two 12th region teams. But in my opinion Somerset should have won both of them. Lincoln and McCreary do not have an inside game, except dribble penetration. Both teams are, dribble penetrate or shoot the three. I will admit both are good at it, but it should not beat Somerset. I would rather face McCreary or Lincoln in the first game of the region, (if Somerset even gets that far), than play Rockcastle Co., Pulaski Co., Wayne Co., or Boyle Co.

Somerset was not aggressive in the first half tonight against McCreary Co. they committed way too many unforced turnovers while just passing the ball across half court and just passing it around the three point line. It is a different story if you are attacking the basket and turning the ball over but most of Somerset’s turnovers were routine passes.

Tonight against McCreary Bourne got the ball inside 2-4 times in the first half. Most of Somerset’s shots were from the outside; most were open, but most missed. In the second half Bourne got the ball a lot, nearly every time it resulted in a foul or points or both. If Bourne had received the ball in the first half like in the second it would have been a different ballgame. Half of McCreary’s players would have fouled out and Somerset would have had a better shooting percentage. Price also did a better job with dribble penetration in the second half. Somerset’s whole team played more aggressive also.

Here is my solution to beat Lincoln and McCreary Co. (at least on the offensive side):

    1. Play an aggressive defense the whole game.

    2. Do not take a long outside shot, three or otherwise, unless the ball has been inside first, even if you are wide open. If the ball goes inside first, even if a shot is not available, and then comes back out the majority of the time it will result in a higher percentage shot then would have occurred if it hasn’t been inside. It will also place Somerset in better rebounding position.

    3. There also needs to be more dribble penetration by Somerset. Whoever can beat their man, or can rub off a screen, Price, Dockery, Coomer, Fitzpatrick, Wallen or whoever else needs to get in as deep as possible and shoot a layup, or 10-12 footer, or pass deeper inside, or pass back outside for a three. There always needs to be an outlet back out if a shot is not available.

    4. Bourne, or whoever else is posting up inside needs to get the ball every trip down the floor, (if a fast break is not available) or there needs to be dribble penetration by the guards, forwards. The post man needs to post up strong and good decisions need to be made passing inside, and as much time taken as needed to get it there, if they double or triple before the entry pass, that should open up dribble penetration.

    5. If the ball gets inside as often as it should, Somerset’s post man will get doubled or tripled nearly every time they get it, if a high percentage shot is not available it needs to be passed out for an open shot or to be set up again.

    6. That is the offense, fast break, post inside, dribble penetration, three pointer (only after the ball has been inside).

You need to get a coaching job and since you know the teams really well.

Jones,Jackson, Thacker and Woods one out of the group might need your help.

  2. Unless something happens and McCreary makes a run and wins the district championship or something - which the chances are slim to none - then they'll probably be a new coach next season, a year after Waters was handed the position. There was several people who interview and wanted to interview for the position at McCreary because there is a huge chance to succeed with the amount of students there. From my understanding, the coach or a coach from the Danville area wanted the job, but on two different occasions, the coach and school couldn't get a date to get the interview. The players have all but given up on this season, sadly. They finally won their first game of the year, and it may be the only one in the short stint of Waters.

Softball and baseball are a mystery to me. It all depends on who plays. As those two get closer, I can give you a better prediction.

    Thanks for the update SSF

  3. I would still like McCreary's chances. They didn't play well in the second half and still were able to win. I mean, you don't go up against another team by 18 points if you aren't in good. Like I said, I think the refs gave McCreary the benefit of the doubt in the first half, but Cumberland's "best player" did the fouls that he was called for. McCreary was faster and quicker to the ball and to the basket in the first half, and Cumberland's bigs couldn't keep up and they fouled in the post. You know that just as well as I do.

SSF we all know by now, your a expert in McCreary Sports. Please tell us what going on in the girls basketball program. What should we expect out on the Baseball and Softball fields in 2008?

  4. Cumberland played a very solid game. With about two and a half minutes left in the game they were down 62-60 and Garfield Wilson got a good look for the lead from behind the 3 point line that went in and out. UHA out scored them 10-2 to end the game. The Skins and Johnson played very well and had a chance to win this game. This was a great test for Cumberland that will be beneficial down the road! Brooks Hogue hit some big shots down the stretch for the Skins that helped give them a shot at the victory. Hopson and Edmunson both had big games including some high flying dunks, the last one of the 360 variety for Hopson on a breakaway for their last bucket. Very entertaining game to watch!!

Best of LUCK to Cumberland in the District and Regional Tournament!

  5. The BriarJumpers (17-9, 10-5) head to Raider land on Tuesday to face the Raiders of McCreary Central (22-4, 12-2). The Jumpers just came off of a closer-the-the-score-indicated game against Lincoln, in which they ended up losing by double digits. Central, whose seniors haven't been the Jumpers in three tries, have been the consistent #2 in the Region. Is this the year the Raiders finally get the W?

    Predictions:

    McCreary Central 77

    Somerset 65

Who really cares......All of the District Tournaments start in 10 days,

  6. Good for Coach Jones to allow his team score 100 points. I would say he personally could have cared a less if they scored a 100 or 92. But it rewarded the McCreary crowd that paid $5.00 to see the game. It sounds like the home crowd got alot of excitment on the way to 100. I personally think there is a big difference between rewarding your crowd and have the crowd "make out your starting lineup"

I reality Coach Jones had a choice to make: Please his crowd and tick off Whitley Co. or Please Whitley Co. and tick off his crowd.

Its to bad the Whitley Co. coach put him in that predicament by holding the ball the last 2 minutes. Personally I would have had my team play it out and challenged them to "D" up and keep them from scoring a 100. But to each his own.

I was there scouting and left at halftime. What I witnessed was Whitley threw the ball all over the gym, and couldn't throw it in the ocean when they did manage to get off a shot. And defensively they played man to man and McCreary had their way with them.

I got a chance to see Whitley in a Christmas Tournament and they are a much better team than how they played tonight.

I saw this happen a few years ago.

Southwestern was playing All Saints , when SW scored their 98th point All Saints held the ball the last 2 minutes of the game, preventing them from scoring a 100.

I guess it was some small accomplishment to keep us from hitting the century mark. I know for a fact that the coaching staff and players didn't care, but the fans were a bit disappointed.

    I agree with Coach!

  7. You are right, but those kids played as subs in the meat of the game, and to be honest it is not entirley accurate, but hey the game is over and I don't think McCreary will have to worry about a return trip to Whitley as I don't see them playing in the future.

If Rob was not letting the crowd run the team how come he spent so much time looking up at them. Oh yeah and High fiving a kid who just got a technical foul for a head but, real class.

Kudos to Coach Baker and company for acting like sportsmen and not reataliating.

    :argue:

Its ok for Whitley Co. to beat Jellico 80 to 36 (2004-2005). I do see anyone crying on here from Jellico.

I agree with no return trip. The coaching staff from Whitley will show some real class and maybe play Jellico twice.

McCreary beat Whitley last season, beat them again this season, so I understand why they wouldn't want to play the Raiders again.

Kudos to Baker and Company for acting like sportsmen. LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

they statement should be on David Letterman.:ylsuper:

  8. In hindsight I guess Whitley should have just handed the ball the Rob's Raiders and let them score about 120 then they could have really felt good about themselves. I mean that was their goal to score 100 so they could feel good about themselves.

To be honest Whitley should have slowed the tempo earlier in the game, but with the youth of the team the players on the floor did not recognize that, they keep playing hard and trying to score. Regardless of the score in the second half the kids kept playing hard and fighting for every basket and they will be better for having been through it.

The Raiders didn't need any help from Whitley coaching staff with turnovers, they had no answer for the press in the first half.

Whitley looked better in the 2nd because the RAIDERS let up.

  9. I'm always here to help!

    WHITLEY CO. (11-14) — McCumbers 16, Akins 9,

    Prewitt 5, Lowrie 4, Crawford 5, Lovett 2, Ponder 2,

    Powers 5, Danrels 5.

    MCCREARY CENTRAL (21-3) — Watts 22, Swiger

    22, Phillips 15, Hale 4, Musgrove 3, Roark 9, Lay 7,

    Dixon 8, Wright 8, Tucker 2.

    Whitley Co. . . . . . . . . .5 7 19 22— 53

    McCreary Central . . .23 27 24 26—100

Look at the 2 half, 41 points in the 2 nd half shows McCreary did let up.

  10. I agree with an earlier poster that both teams could have handled the situation better. I understand the desire of McCreary to score 100 and the desire for Whitley to keep them from it. It might have been better if both teams had just put the JV's in and let the chips fall.

Either way, McCreary needed a big win for confidence sake. The Raiders have a solid ballclub but obviously had to be a little shaken by the home loss to Rockcastle County. I think McCreary is the clear #2 team in the 12th Region, just a slight notch below Lincoln County. McCreary Central is looking for their first regional title since 1983. We might be setting up an exciting finish to the regional tournament!

McCreary had their JV and freshman team in the last 6 mins. Coach Baker brough 3 starters back in and thats when everything happen.

  11. I happen to ge to see the game tonight and I have to say; McCreary County has a great basketball team. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see them in the sweet sixteen this year. Other than some presence in the post position, McCreary has an all around good basketball team. They guard play is tremendous. I have to say however that the above statement about running the score up is definately a farce. The McCreary county faithful decided to keep their main rotation in well into the fourth quarter, when the game was absolutely well out of reach for the undermanned Colonels. This happens sometimes. The disturbing factor to this game was the fact that coach Jones continued to Full Court press throughout the remainder of the game. Then, when the Raiders had a chance to reach the 100 point mark they fouled the Colonels as if it were a close game. Don't get me wrong, it is a great accomplishment to score a 100 points during a high school basketball game. This is a feat that is very rairly achieved in high school basketball. However, why would you want to run the score up on a team just to achieve this feat? Why would you bring in your best player (Watts) in with 1:30 left in the game in order to assure this goal. Its simple... Arrogance... McCreary county has the best team in possibly their schools history, and their team plays extremely hard. But pulling a move such as this only increases the chance of getting a key player injured, and only shows extreme disrespect to your opponent. Its sad when you let foolish pride and self indulgence take the place of sportsmanship and respect. To me this shows absolutely no class, and anyone involved in McCreary County sports should be embarassed by the actions taken during this game. You also comment on the fact that the only reason that Coach Jones continued to pummle the opposing team was becase of the fans. That shows some real self control right there. Where would high school athletics be if we let the fans and the parents make the decisions in the high school programs. As far as what Whitley coach said on the radio about this showing no class. I would definately have to agree. A coach should never subject an opposing team to this type of embarassment.

You left out a couple important parts, Whitley Co. brought 3 starters back to hold the ball against McCreary JV and freshman team. With Baker screaming 4 corners from 1:50 left and saying not to shoot because McCreary only needing 2 points for a 100. McCreary played 12 kids in the first half. The only starter to score in the 4th was Watts and he had 3. Watts left the game with 6:30 to go. He did return with 53 sec to go.... for one play.

The Radio and Coach Baker didn't tell the full story. Baker started the entire mess and McCreary just cleaned his mess up.

The score was 50 to 12 at the half. The final was 100 to 53 so Jones did let up, allowing you to score 41 points in the 2nd half.

  12. Hmm.. that's a tough toss for McCreary. Southwestern is the better team out of the two (SW/Monti.) However, the tournament is being held at McCreary Central where they have destroyed 48th District Opponents.

    1 McCreary 88

    4 Southwestern 70

    2 Wayne 68

    3 Monticello 60

    1 McCreary 82

    2 Wayne 71

McCreary wins their first district championship since 1990.

You seem to have all answers on the 48th district.

  13. Nice win by the Rockets. However, if I'm a McCreary fan I wouldn't read any more into this upset than I would over the Raider's win over Lincoln. Up until the game last week Lincoln is the only team in the 12th that had shown any seperation from the rest of the teams. The game against McCreary showed that the gap was not as large as it had appeared. The game tonight just shows that the 12th Region is completely wide open and any team that makes it to the Regional Tourney can get hot and win it.

    Very well spoken
