  1. I might agree with you that Mercer is underrated but exactly who have they beat this season to reveal them as heavily rated as you believe?

They lost to a good Madison Central squad by 23 points (I know they shot themselves a lot but it was still a big loss). They dominated a really bad Lincoln team, a 1-2 Pulaski squad and a Southwestern team that was dominated by Class AA Danville.

I'm not going to say that Mercer needs to be ranked any higher. But they went nose to nose with Madison Central. It was 0-0 late in the third and Mercer fell apart. This team has really improved since last season.

  2. Series

This will be the 10th game in the series for these two schools. Lincoln County leads the series 8 games to 1, including two victories last season. Lincoln County has won 8 in row in the series.

In the series, Lincoln County has outscored Mercer County 214-71, for a per game average of roughly 23 to 7. Mercer County has never scored more than 14 points in a game against Lincoln County.

Mercer County head coach, Marty Jaggers, was the head coach at Lincoln County from 1991-1996, where he compiled an overall record of 49 wins and 27 losses (64.4%). He took the Patriots to the 1993 AAA Finals and coached 1993 Mr. Football Jeremy Simpson.

Since taking over at Mercer County prior to the 2005 season, Jaggers has posted a 29-8 (78.3%) record, including a 15-0 AA State championship season in 2006.

The big difference is that they've only played twice since the merger. The Mercer team last year was struggling to adjust to so many losses of personnel from the previous season. I expect a pretty good game. The Mercer D is stout.

  3. I would have to agree with you. It's just my opinion - I think Short is a very good athlete, but he is not a natural QB. I just can't see him playing QB at the next level anywhere. I do think he could play safety somewhere though. Over the past two years, when he had an opportunity to play some safety, he did a very good job. I think Jaggers would be doing this kid a favor by moving him to safety, just like he did with Freeman Edwards 2 years ago.

I agree. I'd like to see Trevor play in the secondary. Freeman Edwards made the best of his move to safety. That kid was a beast back there. He was a real head hunter!

  4. Mercer also had a very good team in 1993, too , didnt they?! They went 8-3 that year, with their only losses to Danville and Anderson County during the regular season which forced them to play Rockcastle County in the 1st round, I believe?!

That's three teams that Mercer loss too who happened to have some of their (Rock, Danville, Anderson) best teams to date.

Could you have imagined putting some of those big, strong linemen in front of people like Craig Yeast, Jay Parks, etc.?!?? If people though last years overall talent level was out of this world (and in certain spots, it was), they wouldn't have known what they were looking at back then....WOW!!

Yeah, Harrodsburg had Jewel Brown (great Back who was on UK's depth chart along with Jay Parks Early on before transferring out), Jason Dunn(Still in the NFL after 11 years,,Craig Yeast(holds many SEC records still and then spent 4years in the NFL),Dennis Johnson(played 3 seasons in the NFL) Julias Yeast(Ohio St.),Chad Dunn, and many more. Mercer Had John David Taylor(great back who would knock your head off),Terry Riley(you didn't want to tackle this guy he was a tank),Timmy Rogers(NAIA all american Lb),Brian Sims (had some wheels), and many others that I'm leavin off. You throw in that line (in which there was an article in the lexington hearld leader that talked about Mercer's line being as big as the wolverines of Michigan). They were just big. And Chuck Smith was on the Mercer staff when French was at Mercer. Chuck Smith should have been the coach. He interviewed for the job. He was the real gem that got away.

  5. I've been in Danville since 92, and Kinte Bess gets my vote for best overall player since I've been here. Many people talk of how great a running back he was, but what really stands out in my mind was his awesome talent as a defensive back.

I've watched a LOT of high school football over the years, and Kinte remains one of the most intense/big hitting/lay you out/in your face db's I have ever seen play hs football.

I was about to mention him. And, you are spot on about his abilites as a defensive back. He was a great athlete. He was unbelievably fast. Those Danville teams were so dominant.

  6. My fault, didn't read your post there Tracks. haha You know what we should start doing though?? Inquiring and acting like we know all that goes on within a community and school system 3 1/2 hours away like some??!!:sssh:

You were just thinking what I was thinking. The late 80's era would have been a good one. Harrodsburg was tough and Mercer had an awesome team. They had one of the biggest offensive lines I've ever seen on a high school team. They all were up around the 300 range. The only problem was that they lacked team speed. Then you add the Pioneers in and that team would have been just sick. Mercer had two losses that year and both were to Danville due to not being able to counter their speed. Donnie Redd was just too fast. Brandon Ford's dad Tootie was pretty good for Harrodsburg that year. I'm hearing alot of good things about his son on the 8th grade team. I hear those youngsters are looking really good right now.

  7. Last year's team was good but they also played in a smaller class then what they should have. I'm not trying to start anything, I'm just saying that if you're talking about that as the "dream team" because of the results, you must look at the whole picture. That team should have been competing in 3A at least.

Good chance that team would have been playing at Papa Johns in 3A as well.

  8. I thought last year's state champions were the "dream team" ... hastily put together, but it was hard to argue with the results. ;)

Last year's team was very good. But if they were merged about 15 to 20 years ago there would be a few more titles. There has been a good amount of talent in this area. Heavily on the Harrodsburg side.

  9. :jump: Uh....yeah. What an oversight. DUH....

Like you said earlier. Way too many players that could be mentioned. I work with Jason's brother every day. He's always bringing in pics from his times out in Kansas City. Man, it must be nice. They take care of their players families while they are at the games for sure.

  10. First of all, hats off to Greeneville. They are a very good team and obviously were very well coached, as well. This one was a full 12 round, heavyweight, knockdown, drag out..fight until the end.

Greeneville had a great combination of size and speed, IMO. Their little halfback could flat fly, among other strengths that they had. Everyone knows that Mercer doesn't have the same speed that they had last year, or even close, to be exact. Mercer tonite, though, showed something that is very promising...they put together some drives that flat wore out Greeneville, I thought.

Mercer's 1st score came on an 80 yard drive that took over 8 minutes of the second quarter. They had another 78 yard, time consuming drive that came up 2 yards short. Even though Mercer didn't score, I think that it still took a lot of Greeneville, on their defensive side, if nothing else. It was classic "smashmouth" football, and it didn't matter if Mercer was in the shotgun or in the wishbone.

This Mercer bunch showed something tonite, against a very good football team. The defense was lights out, the offensive line played very well, the secondary showed out, Jordan Yeast had a great game, Trevor Short (QB) stepped up HUGE. Trevor had a couple big runs early in the game, then threw a couple picks, but on that TD pass with :36 left in the game, he threaded the needle. John T. Linton ran a great route on the TD and made a great catch in traffic. This 2007 version of the Titans definately have a lot of things to work on, but then again, whe the heck doesnt after 2 weeks into the season..especially when all of your "skill" kids are only into their 2nd week ever of starting!!??

Jordan Yeast ran like a man possessed tonite. His leadership and play has really stepped up. Tonite was his nite. McCloud and Griffith did a great job when they got their carries, too...but that's what happens when you have 3 very capable running backs and a talented QB, but you only have one ball for each play. Unfortunately, all four of them can't get the ball every play. Tonite happened to be Jordan's nite and here is guessing that Griffith, McCloud, Yeast and Short might just share the year by committe. All will get their carries in the game, and one or two of them will have the "stuff" that nite and two will get the short end of the stick (as far as carries go), so-to-speak.

Congrats on the win and keep working hard!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought that last drive was just clutch. I mean the game was on the line. They will lose sooner or later this year. It could have easily been tonight. But those kids stepped up. They just made some huge plays down the stretch. That is going to help them as they play on through this season. Last week I was worried cause I saw a timid team. With all the new starters that's to be expected. But, against the team from Tennessee they showed some toughness. Great game!

  11. 1st score. A Mecer turnover set them up around the 45. Second play, running back broke one for a TD. McCloud blocked the extra point.

2nd score. Greeneville put together a pretty good drive. Mercer appeared to have them stopped. Pass interference call gave Greenville a first down and put them in fieldgoal range.

Greeneville's kicker could flat kick. One of his kickoffs was less than a yard from going out of the endzone in the air.

You aint joking. That kid had some leg on him. That's a huge weapon!

  12. Hats off to Jordan Yeast. He really showed some power out there. Mercer trailed for most of the game. They got the ball back with less than 4 minutes and put together a drive to take the lead with about 30 seconds left. The defense was stout against the run. Besides the one run that greenville broke for a score they were shut down. Once again Yeast was a workhorse tonight. The Titans have alot to work on but, they showed they had some heart out there tonight. Greenville had a great turnout as well.

  13. Very predictable. How did Mercer's quarterback do?

He threw for a couple of nice TD passes. Overall for the Titans the youth really showed. But, there is alot of potential. I really liked what I saw out of McCloud and Yeast. I think once the Qb gets a couple of games under his belt he will be fine. He does have a nice arm on him.
