  1. Remember there were less games to win, but it was also alot harder to get into the tourney at that point as well. Just about every team that made it was extremely good. It was a different era, but the rules were the same for everyone.

One thing I was wondering as I was typing that out was to what were the qualifications of making the tournament back then? Since there were only either 8 or 16 I wondered if you had to win a "conference tournament" similar to what the smaller schools of this era have to do. If that is the case, then that could possibly make the playing field a bit more even. I'm just not as educated on the past as much as some people which is why I have the view that I do...

  2. Let's be clear. Never said you called anybody a cheater. I happen to have some friends who are both UNC and DUKE fans. They are always bashing Cal and calling him a cheater among other things. Only one problem, they can never cite one example or shred of evidence. They just say he is out smarting the NCAA, I just laugh. Duke has been very good, but it's a shame that you could careless about anything outside of your personal lifetime. Do you know who Pistol Pete is? What about the Holocaust? Might want to broaden your horizons outside of your own personal lifetime. There are alot of cool things (and not so good) that happened prior to your arrival. Hope you will be pulling for the Big Blue today.

I for one believe Coach Cal was the best thing that could've happened to UK. And maybe I should've rephrased what I said a bit, I do know and am aware of college basketball history. Like you said, there are some amazing moments and players and then there are some not so good. I just put priority on what has happened in my era since that is what I know the best. One thing that always gets me is when I talk about how good Duke is/has been is the only response I get by UK fans is 7 national championships. I may be in the minority and will probably get bashed hardcore but I find it WAY more difficult to win the national title say, within the 30 thirty years, as opposed to when UCLA went on their run or when UK won in 48, 49, 51 and 58. For those first two championships, how many games did they have to win? 3? And then in 51 and 58 they had to win 4. If somebody has a better view of how it was back then that could shed me some light I'd love to hear it because I'm always open to knew views. I just can't value a championship back in that time period as opposed to winning one now.

  3. Love how Duke fans are always banging on the "last 20 years" drum and always bashing Cal as a cheater. Same things over and over. Gets old. All fluff, no substance. I am sure they all have a miniature Coach K statue that they bow down to every morning before they start their day. Funny. The game in Catlanta is very much anticipated.

I would like you to find one post where I've said Cal is a cheater... In numerous threads I've come to say Coach Cal is a better in game coach than most UK fans even give him credit for...UK was far from being relevant for quite a few years until Cal stepped on campus. He's got them going in the right direction. The fact that Duke is the #1 college basketball program in the last 20 years is undebatable IMO. And since that has been my lifetime, I could care less about anything else.

  4. I don't think the arguement should be whether the Big East is a good conference or not... everybody knows they are the best. The arguement IMO should be why do they underachieve in the Big Dance?

  5. They certainly made it count. It is a surprising stat though.

I never really thought about it until you said something. The last time was in 2004 when they got hosed against UConn in the Final Four. That was one of my favorite Duke teams.

  6. Anyone who is a true college basketball fan has to have a great deal of respect for Coach K.

Not that anyone is counting, but Duke has only been past the Sweet 16 once in the last seven years.

Good thing Duke made it count. :thumb: But what is the stat, they've made it to the Sweet 16 13 of the last 16 or something to that nature? Not many teams can say that.

  7. That it was, that it was. :D

I made a post last night, can't remember which one whether it was the update thread or this one. I said since I was biased and Singler brought Duke a championship I'd still take Singler any and every day but I see why EVERY other fan of college basketball would take Williams. :thumb:

  8. After finally getting to witness Derrick Williams, you still think Kyrie is the #1 pick? Williams is a double double machine in the NBA IMO.

UKMustangFan was it you that told me you'd take Williams over Singler any day of the week?

  9. I do not think anyone will argue that Irving was not good last night... that was not the point of Cats post. Like I stated in the thread from a few days ago, inserting Irving back in would have an effect on the team chemistry which has been developed through the season. It is negligent to say otherwise, imo. I am not saying it is the reason they lost - it probably would not have mattered - but it is an entirely different Duke team that won the ACC tournament and earned a #1 seed. Jameer Nelson is a good example when the Magic played the Lakers in the Finals. When your entire rotation is different all of a sudden, it takes a while for everything to click.

But as Bilas pointed out, it was the right thing to do in playing Irving. I do not disagree with that. I was in the minority that believed it would hurt Duke and why I picked Arizona in my bracket against them.

Irving playing had no affect on Arizona flat out being a buzzsaw last night. If Duke played bad I would agree but if you look at the stats they really didn't play all that bad...
