Has that coach been there long? What kind of size do they have? I remember Donta Smith in high school playing in Rupp and he was sensational. I can't remember where he went to college and didn't know he went pro, that's good stuff! The mighty 9th as you called it came close to winning state numerous times but couldn't close the deal. Maybe if the referees in 1978 would have seen Mr. Charles Hurts (sp?) hand up through the rim "blocking" a shot the 9th would have another one, but as it stands my Pioneers are still the only team to get one. The above statement about the 78 game was the worst officiating I had ever seen. As far as having good players come out of the 9th, I could go on for a while but i'll just mention one. Dave Cowens was a Newport Catholic grad I believe in 66 or so. He went on to become an NBA MVP and was named to the NBA top 50 of all time with guys like Jordan, Magic, etc, etc.
I am aware of all of that. I am just pointing out that SK fans need not look down their noses at the rest of the 8th region.
Donta Smith played JUCO, was on his way to UL when the NBA came calling. Drafted late first or early second round by Atlanta Hawks. Now in NBA developmental league i believe.
Coach Drury has been at Anderson for awhile as Asst. and head coach( Mack The Knife can probably help us out on this one.) Anderson is not very big. Best player probably Dustin Aldridge 6'3 SR, C.J. Penny 6'3 FR is another player of note. They lost to Shelby by single digits in District final and had one point lead at half.
There is alot of luck involved in winning state title. In Shelby's case as you mentioned above. But Lady Luck smiled on SK in the 1981 33rd District Tournament .With SK facing elimination, Walton Verona had two point lead with seconds to go when a Walton player missed front end of one and one.
SK rebounded miss and Ponzer hits desperation shot to send game to OT. The rest is history. I guess that means the 8th region can add another state title to its list since SK now resides in 8th .

SK fans should not overlook Anderson Co. They are headed by one of the best and most respected coaches in the 8th region in Glen Drury, who has won an 8th region title before(1997). Anderson will play hard and very physical. Although i have never seen SK's Mike Hester play, I hear he is very good . Some SK fans on this board seem to think the 8th region has not had good players or teams before SK graced us with their presence. The 8th has produced NBA players in very recent years( Donta Smith-Oldham Co), state champions ( Scott Co 1998), (Shelby Co 1978) and numerous wins in the sweet 16 over the years. The mighty 9th region has produced one state champion( SK 1981). I would not be surprised if Anderson upends SK on Tuesday.:irked:

You do mean 31st district championship ,right ?Any thoughts? looks to be a physical and crazy game cause there is no love between these teams. -
MO, i will handle this one. They have more of a chance than the school you went to! Unless of course you went SC! I'd would have rather stayed in the 9th where you have more than 2 or 3 teams that actually can play. I'm glad they still play the better competition up here, than to play all same region teams and have only a few losses and think you have a squad. SK has been very inconsistant all year and probably won't make it out this year, but please refer to my first scentence on this post!SK will have their hands full for years to come in the 8th region. Didn't they play Oldham Co. this season ? Oh yeah Oldham won that game. Oldham just finished runner-up in their district, assuming SK beats Grant tomorrow , SK could possibly play Oldham in first round of region tournament. If you think that SK will have a field day in the 8th , this year or any year , you are in for rude awakening. :irked: Besides, SC only won one region title the last five years ( 2004) .

Game will be extremely intense. On paper , Carroll should never lose to Gallatin. But other factors become involved, like : coaching , desire , hustle , etc.... . Will be interesting to see if Carroll's senior laden team can overcome Gallatin's youth. If Gallatin plays harder than Carroll , GC will win. If the GC youth play like the young team they are, CC will win. GC is not good enough to" out talent " anybody. That being said , i look for GC to out work CC for a 5 point victory. Funny how expectations have changed since November when most "experts" were picking CC to challenge Shelby :scared:  for the 8th region title.Any thoughts? looks to be a physical and crazy game cause there is no love between these teams. -
1999.When's the last time GC got to a region? -
Glad you have come to the dark side MO.Whether you like it or not you have to give it up for what Mr. Jones has done down in Gallatin Co. Honestly, this team does not have a lot of talent, but Mr. Jones still was able to produce a winning ball club. Well deserved. -
Jon Jones cries too much. He is a decent coach but would get a lot more respect if he didn't protest every call against his team. I don't know where the COY comes from. They have had a decent year but even if they survive and win this very weak district they won't last long in the regionals.
Sounds like someone is not happy over the fact that thier team flopped after being preseason #2 in the 8th region. We all know that those predictions were way off base from the start, which is not the players or coach's fault. With that being said , i believe that if Coach Jones were coach at Carroll County, the Panthers would not have underachieved all season. Keep in mind that on paper CC has more talent than GC. After all, CC did place two players on All Region Team( Mcmahan and Miller), GC placed one ( Davis). CC player rotation included mostly seniors while Coach Jones played nine players:1 senior, 3 juniors, 3 sophs, and 2 freshman.
Yes the 8th region overall is down, it is Shelby's to lose. Regardless of what happens in the 31st District or 8th Region tournament, we are all playing for second anyway.

This may possibly be due to the fact that Shelby County should be 25-3. Gallatin was not expected to win more than 8 or 9 games with such a young team. No disrespect to Coach Clark, but give me Slaughter, White, Chambers ,and Wade, and i SHOULD win 25 games. When smaller schools have a good season, it is considered an accomplishment. Coach Jones consistantly gets more out of less year after year. There are more small schools in this region and those coaches take care of their own (meaning small schools). They will make sure a large school does not win coach of the year - unless it is overwhelmingly obvious. -
Congratulations to coach Jones and Justin Davis. :thumb: :banana:This is the All 8th Region Team, as voted by the coaches, in order of points received.A.J. Slaughter, Shelby Co. (Player of the Year)
Mike Hester, Simon Kenton
Patrick Steele, Williamstown
Kevin Allen, North Oldham
Boston Howe, Grant Co.
Alex Pehkle, Oldham Co.
Israel Chambers, Shelby Co.
Bailey Tabor, Grant Co.
Brent McMahon, Carroll Co.
Dustin Aldridge, Anderson Co.
Justin Toole, Owen Co.
Brett Miller, Carroll Co.
Justin Davis, Gallatin Co.

Jamar White, Shelby Co.
Coach of the Year goes to Gallatin County's Jon Jones.
Jones also won the award in 1999.

That's real classy. :irked:He would not have scored 1000 points anywhere else.None the less, Congrats!

Yes.did davis get his thousand points. -
Since the 97-98 season, Gallatin's record against WV is 12W-7L. Gallatin swept 2 games in 97-98,swept 3 games in 98-99, swept 2 games in 99-00, swept 2 games in 05-06. Split 2 in 00-01, split 2 in 01-02, split 2 in 02-03. WV swept 2 in 03-04, swept 2 in 04-05. Per KHSAA website.Very surprised by Jones performance. But definitely good news.......I can't remember the last time Walton was swept by Gallatin Co.

I was going to pick the Wildcats by 4, since 13 of their 16 victories are by single digits. However, if Coach Bennett and Coach Sullivan concentrate solely on Davis as you suggest, then I'll take Gallatin by double digits.
Mack i agree with you. :thumb:

I have to differ with your opinion. Mainly because i don't think they can contain Davis. I am sure you haven't noticed , but someone different leads them in scoring almost every night. Although Davis was MVP of All "A" Region tournament, that honor should have went to junior Cody Perkins. Davis can make this team very hard to beat , but they can get along just fine without him also. I assure you they will be even better next year even after Davis graduates. I am not knocking Davis, i just think they have alot of interchangable parts , most of which are freshman , sophs, and juniors. Tonight they will probably start one senior( Davis), one junior, two sophs, and one freshman with two juniors, one soph , and one freshman coming off the bench . As a matter of fact, WV has three players that would start at GC, Daugherty, Hensley, and Tungate.
I look for GC to seriously contend for All "A" Region title for the next 5 years. But i also look for WV to make run after that.

Should be good game tonight.Good win for WV they moved the ball well and didn't commit alot of TO's. Let it get a little to close in the end but hit their FT's to close it out. I thought Kyle Lynn had a nice game and hit two much needed 3's. Hope 2 in a row can help tonight against Gallatin County. If they play as good MTM tonight this could really be a good game. -

The Wildcats improve to 16-8 heading into Wednesday's home finale against Walton-Verona. Sophomore swingman Scott Brown led Gallatin with a career-high 28 points.
On a side note, Justin Davis had 11 points to give him 980 career points . Would be kind of ironic if he nets 20 against Walton-Verona on Wednesday to reach 1000 points. But not at the expense of a win of course.
