Who is the greatest Kentucky high school football coach of all time? Criteria to be considered may include total games won, total championship games coached in, and resources the coach had to work with. Resources may include the school's football tradition prior to the coach's arrival, the school's facilities, the school's enrollment, and any other relevant factors that may better assist in determining the greatest Kentucky high school football coach of all time. One thing to bear in mind is that however the determination is made it is a subjective determination. To start the discussion, I list several coaches below. This list is not exclusive, nor is it final. In fact, the greatest coach may not even me on this list. The list is merely to facilitate discussion on this topic.
Sam Harp-Beginning in 1989 and continuing through this season his teams have appeared in seven state championships games and won 70% of those matches.
Try 10 state championship appearances since 1989, winning 7.

I have seen the tape and it was blocked. Why else would the ball not go beyond the line of scrimmage and go directly to the right. You have the hardware so it doesn't matter.
-
Morris definately got his foot in on the touchdown catch, so that was the right call. The roughing the kicker was the terrible call. BJ Strode got a hand on the ball therefore it wasn't roughing at all. But, it should not have came down to that.

I know this is off topic but after seeing ads1982's avatar, I remember that playing at Danville is one of the most intimidating places to play. Bethlehem went there last year but it's still a rough place to play on the road.
I can see your point about the banners etc... But, it comes down to taking care of business when in between the lines. When the ball is snapped the player is not thinking about how many state championships this team has. I think Danville actually plays better on the road. When you go on the road it seems to put you in focus.

Respect has to be given to anyone that knocks out Bardstown. Bethlehem is very tough. I think it is going to be a very close game, but the edge has to be given to Danville based on experience and homefield advantage. If the game was at Bethlehem, I think it will be a different story. Danville by touchdown or less.
People talk about home field advantage and all that, but I think home field advantage is irrellevant. It's high school football, and there will not be 90,000 fans screaming. The only time there is an advantage to the home team is when the offense cannot make the calls at the line because of the noise. In high school football that is not an issue. The field will still be 100 yards long and 53 1/3 yards wide, and its still 10 yards for a first down. With all that said, Danville by 22.

They just lined up and ran right at them. That just shows how much emotion plays a role in football. Two different teams from the first game to tonight. Its the little things.

What has Danville done to improve on that many points since the last game?
Find out Friday!

Sorry but I think you are misinformed on this and your other comment. They have talent, but so did Harrodsburg. How many rings did they win? (Not a slam on Alvis, just a point to be made)
It's not just titles. Every year they are considered a contender and usually go and play that way. They take on 4A schools (Manual comes to mind), 3A schools (Southwestern, Boyle, Ft Thomas recently) and a lot of other top programs.
Hatz, they beat Manual the same year they beat Trinity with Brohm.

How many A schools have had five division I athletes in the same year? How many A schools have had five d I athletes in the same amount of time as Danville. I am not knocking coach Harp, but please tell me a school with more athletes in A ball than Danville.
That could be why they have more state titles then anyone in thier class also! Let's remember, Danville is the only school in the state that has won titles in 3 different classes. So, it aint the A ball. They wrecked shop in class AA, smashed hoptown to win AAA.
-
Have you seen some of the talent that he lost with? Lets not forget running cover 0 every down against one of the best passing teams in the history of the state.
What, when, where? Don't think I remember them running cover 0. Ever!
-
I think Sam Harp is a little overrated...Danville maybe a small school but they have as much talent as any big school in the state
To say that is complete sillyness. You may think they do, only because they win all the time. Do you know how many Div. 1 players he has had since coming to Danville? Five! Since 1988! Five! There are teams that have that in one year!

There are several publics with over 1,000 boys. Also, the title of the thread is Top 5 coaches in the state. There were no paramaters. If you don't think that Glaser and/or any other private coach is in the Top 5, then that is fine, that's your opinion, but what you responded with was not the purpose of the thread.
As for my opinion as to who the top 5 coaches in the state are, all you have to do is look at the number of titles they've won, and count down from there.
Not sure about the public enrollement of boys with over a thousand. If there is any at all then I would be shocked. What do you mean there are no parameters? Then Coach so and so at Big Little Pond High is the best. He may not have any wins, but there are no parameters. It is my basis for my own criteria of how I break it down in my own mind. That is how I base a career of a coach. All i did was respond to your thread. You came out talking about Glaser and his 82% winning percentage. Fine, that was while he was at X. Harp at Danville is over 90% if you don't count his stops along the way! Count the number of titles then. The numbers don't lie. I go with Sammy Harp. I know it's my own opinion. This whole board is all opinions!

I am not sure if there is one in the whole state that does have a public school with 1000 boys. There is not one in the top 10. Also, i think you must take into acount the other stops coaches have had along the way. Harp's record is not based solely on his success at Danville. If that were the case he would be close if not in the 90% range in winning percentage. Where else was Glaser before he was at X. Harp was at Calloway and Anderson. He led Anderson to the only undefeted team in school history in 1985. Was he ever at a public school that forced him to change his offensive and defensive systems based on the type of players he has. I know that if I am at X or Trinity I can stay pretty consistent with what I do, because there will be enough turnover year after year to have players that can run your system. For example, if I have a quarterback that can't throw then I better change it up if I am in a throwing system. In those larger private schools you will for the most part have guys that can fit your system because of the numbers you have to choose from. Danville constantly has to change what they do year to year because players graduate and you don't have 100 new freshmen a year. That forces you to fit your offense to your personnel. That's coaching.
-
I'm just assuming that you looked at the top 9, since #10 is Glaser. 82% winning percentage and is 6-3 in the finals.
I did not take into account the private schools that have 1000 boys to choose from.

Out of the top ten all time wins, only 5 coaches are still active.
Schnieder- 64% winning % 2-4 in title games
Hilton- 73% 1-0 in title games
Haywood- 72% 2-2 in title games
Redmon- 72% 3-3 in title games
Harp- 78% 7-2 in title games 2-0 head to head with Schnieder
2nd all time in state championships trailing Yeagle. 1-1 vs Yeagle head to head in title games.
The numbers have spoken. My vote goes to Harp.

One thing you don't do is panic! Just do what you do, but do it harder. It aint over yet!

It is always extremely tough to beat a good team twice in the same year. It will be a better game next time. Now, how can Frankfort handle the success?
-
He came from the opposite side of the field to walk boyle's running back down. The kid can go.
-
I must admit after watching him play against Boyle I dont see how he got offered. He is 6'5 but he only cought one pass and he dove for it, he must have dropped 3 passes that game. It is easy to torch the Boyle secondary, and a 6'5 couldnt even do it. Anyway congrats to him, if you work on those hands I am sure he will be amazing.
He had 3 or 4 catches against Boyle. His longest was almost seventy yards! That is getting torched if you ask me. He was also shoving your DB's to the ground like they were paperweights

Does NCAA Permit contact and scholarship offers during soph season? I thought they couldn't offer until after the season.
You can offer a kid in middle school if you want. You just can not send an official offer letter until Sept 1 of their junior year
-
Macon from Danville. He is 6'5 225 in shorts. Very long arms, huge hands. Will be 6'8 270 pounds running down the middle of the field catching passes in college before its over with. He is a sophmore, and still raw. Look out! He is a Div 1 prospect now!

even with all the miscues and fumbles, danville never lost the lead.

Don't forget the fumble that Shadon Brown had, 2 yards deep in the endzone, after slamming the ball down over the goaline, that Neal Brown recovered. For sure a touchdown.
