  1. They have 1.

But that's 1 more than they had last year basically.

Isn't it the Freshman and JV coach's job to develop players.

They did not do this because they did not want any competiton for the job.

Easy to hand it to 1.

Well yes and no in reality.

Can't just "make" a true point guard if the talent is not there. You just do the best you can, focus on what you do well as a team, and hope that overcomes anything else.

I've mentioned that the Frosh team lacks a true point guard but gets by with using big men to get the ball up the floor. In reality, next year there will be an incoming Frosh who will be a very good point guard so its taken care of next year basically.

  2. Like I said before I will keep kids name out of this.

I will let you answer my questions.

How many true point guards do they have on all 3 rosters?

While you are at it tell me why they only developed 1?

    I'll answer.

    They have 1.

But that's 1 more than they had last year basically.

And really they haven't been all that blessed with point guards in recent years. Other than when Bueter and Gesenghues were there (and both could play point) I can't remember when they have had more than 1 point guard.

  3. I really don't have a problem with the way they call held balls, and sometimes think that they wait too long.

I think that a quick whistle on a tie-up, or especially a scramble on the floor, discourages players from becoming hostile towards each other and probably thwarts a lot of potential physical contact problems up to and including starting a fight.

Evan McDole's ejection from the Brossart-Trinity 5th/3rd Semis game back in 2004 was a direct result of officials letting the melee on the floor for a loose ball go way too long, and could have been prevented by a quick whistle, for what was going to be a held ball anyway. How often do you see a player throw an elbow, or a kick etc.. in these situations?

When I coached I always wanted the officials to call a held ball when players were on the floor battling for the loose ball, whether both had clear possession or not. I think that was, and should be sort of an unwritten rule.

I'm sure that I'll get a lot of casual fans who disagree with me, but I think the quicker held ball whistle prevents a lot of would-be problems.

I totally agree with your thoughts. In fact when the ball is loose on the floor I think it should be similar to the hockey puck (along the boards) in that if the ref can't see the entire ball, then the whistle blows.

So if Player A dives for a loose ball and Player X dives too and the ball is under someone's armpit but not posssed the whistle should blow. It prevents injuries and pushing and shoving problems.

  4. Campbell County. And I don't know what their policy is. What does prom queen have to do with athletics. And I beleved I mentioned a move to the frosh team. Plus with all of the girls in CC's middle shool program such a move gives more playing time to a couple that would benefit from it. I for one believe an athlete that is physically capable should be playing at their talent level, not their age level. JMO

Boone co has a policy that players can't be moved up unless they are placed on varsity.

I would take that further and not let any players move up. IMO opinion high school sports should be for high school students. I would consider allowing middle school or grade school kids to play on Frosh teams if otherwise there would not be enough to form a team. That is what the prom queen has to do with athletics. The prom queen, the editor of the paper, the lead in the play, and the center on the team should be high school students who attend that high school.

  5. Here are what I consider significant games played thus far by the 9th's better teams and you can see that this year the 9th is down from previous years but certainly not terrible.

    Boone Co:

    66-44 Win over McCauly (OH)

    75-53 Loss to Fern Creek

    Highlands:

    75-52 Loss to S. Oldham

    57-48 Loss to Simon Kenton

    NCC:

    63-38 Loss to Dunbar

    62-46 Loss to Sacred Heart

64-58 Loss to Glen Este (OH)

55-39 Win over Nature Coast (FLA)

    ND:

    67-50 Loss to Montgomery Co.

57-41 Win over St. Ursula (OH)

    57-52 Loss to Assumption

    60-42 Win over Seton (OH)

    42-37 Win over Ursuline (OH)

    Ryle:

75-45 Loss to Glen Este (OH)

There have been some other wins by 9th region teams over average teams such as Ryle over Madison Central 51-50 but then you see what happened when they played a quality team (and Glen Este is I believe 3-2 against Ohio teams).

Still a lot of games to be played and a few NKY teams get a crack at Sacred Heart and Montgomery Co later in the year. Conner is 6-0 but gets into the tough part of the schedule soon and will start taking some lumps.

  6. Just the opposite.

Beechwood loses 7 starters on offense (4 linemen), but only 5 starters on defense.

LCA loses 7 starters on defense, but only 4 starters on offense (2 linemen).

(I can give you the lists, if you like).

Beechwood loses RB Bankemper but returns RB Teipel.

    Stats:

    4 Bankemper, Tommy 111 rushes 585 yards 13 Tds

    44 Teipel, Neico 133 rushes 815 yards 13 Tds

And they lose Elliot at QB. But the Frosh QB was quite the athlete (and the Frosh team was good, not great) and may step right in as a Soph next year. I look for Beechwood to pound the ball next year with Teipel being one of the leading rushers in NKY next year.

But don't be too caught up with the starters listed from this year. Beechwood has people that can play both ways even though they may not be listed as a starter on one side. Depending on the game or need, they may not see any action on one side of the ball but next game may see extensive action. I do think their offense will be ahead of their defense next year and they definately will not be as deep as they were this year.

Plus I don't think their district will be better overall. They wisely play a tough non-district schedule, which should help again.

  7. I agree that Beechwood, while being very good next year, will be closer to the pack than last year.

Don't know that they won't win it all again, but I think in the immediate future things get a little tigher in Class A. I believe Beechwood will still be a force on offense next year but maybe not as good on defense and not nearly as deep.

  8. You'd still think that with 20 girls playing in 8th, the frosh would be a little stronger. Why not play girls up. There is a girl on 7th purple that is good enough to play frosh. What good does it do her dominating kids at the 7th grade level?

    Maybe none.

But maybe Boone Co schools believe that High school teams should be for their High school students?

Personally I don't think the most popular, beautiful, smart, friendly, world-peace loving 7th grader should be the high school Prom queen so why should she be the starting point guard?

  9. By my count as of today it is 9th 17 wins and 13 losses.

In all fairness, won/loss record of a region really does not mean anything.

If the top team in your region loses two games by a total of 5 points to the #1 and #2 team in the state..................that means alot more than a 1-8 team in your region beating a 1-8 team in another region.

Quite sure every 9th region team that plays 10th region Silver Grove will get a W since SG hasn't had a team in 4 years.

In reality this is a down year (at this point) for the 9th region and may be the worse overall in the last 10 years. However, the previous 5 years may have been the best ever.

  10. Highlands is only giving up 45 pts a game through 4 games. Newport did not manage many points vs. the Camels. I think Highlands shuts down the Cats on the road in the Cat's Den.

    Highlands 72

    Newport 48

Paint dry or grass grow or this game?

Not sure Newport breaks 40, not sure they break 30, wouldn't bet the house on 20.

    Not sure Highlands breaks 50.

Actually probably low scoring for awhile but at some point Newport is going to have to score, as Highlands will be ahead so the final may end up with a decent total.

Would count on the total score at the half breaking 40.

  11. Being 5'9 cannot create a shot?????????????? A 4'9 CAN CREATE A SHOT!!!!!!

Connor took Butler from NCH in the lane off the dribble for 2, later in the game pump fake hit a 3!!! Has had poeple in his face ever since he hit the a few at Holy Cross! He'll be tough to stop especially with Geisler in the middle now. Not sure what he last year, actually who cares?

Very, very few outside players in high school can truly create their own shot off the dribble. And there have not been many in NKY in recent years. Almost all good three point shooters are the result of ball movement and inside/out passing. That's not a slam at the level of high school play but with the defenses played and the lack of a shot clock, teams rely on ball movement to create a three point opportunity or an open look inside. No teams really "allow" players to try and create shots mainly because few players can and it doesn't fit well with the concept of protecting the ball and a high percentage shot.

  12. Quick name the other six Bengal receivers who have made the Pro Bowl.

    The answer:

    The others have been:

    Isaac Curtis (four times)

    Chad Johnson (four)

    Cris Collinsworth (three)

    Carl Pickens (two)

    Eddie Brown (one)

    Chip Myers (one)

And Bob Trumpy was selected to two AFL All-Star games and two Pro Bowls.

  13. Did any one on Brossart play well that you saw?

Good guard play from #20. Might have had all Brossart's points in the first quarter. As long as the NCC aircraft carriers weren't hanging out in the paint waiting, he did a good job penetrating against guards on fast breaks.

Brossart had some decent pressure against NCC (who doesn't have a true point guard) but NCC uses the big people to get the ball up the floor well.

  14. The schools get along great without playing each other... both managed several state championships since the competition was stopped by NCC. Back in the day when the two schools were evenly matched it was the hottest ticket in northern Kentucky. Now that there is quite a disparity between the schools in athletic competition - the BIRDS are better off playing Louisville St. X, Trinity, Elder or Colerain. I do not forsee this rivalry comming back in the near future until the BREDS feel comfortable playing at this level of competition. ;)

Highlands dropped NCC to pursue other marquee games such as Elder at PBS and the Pit. That did not sit well with NCC and a certain coach who did not want to be dropped, but was understandable for Highlands since Highlands goal at the time was more national recognition. Back then there were more district games that had to be played and there wasn't much value for Highlands in the NCC game continuing since they were a Class A school coming off a 2-9 season. The last year (1998) the NCC game actually fell after the start of 7 district games for Highlands. And any games played at Newport Stadium could be on a Saturday so a short district week. In 1999 Elder took the NCC week on the schedule.

  15. I agree APNW, if Cutler had a staff he could be a top national sports talk guy. He is that good.

gt, I bet if you worked at 1530 you would be on the Cutler bandwagon. :D

Part of the problem previously was "they" wanted him to be the shock guy in between games, or as a fill-in host.

Now he can actually converse more naturally. But again Clear Channel is just re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

  16. NewCath 50 Brossart 32

NewCath opens with a 16-3 run.

Brossart hits a half court buzzer-beater to end the first half and scores on the first possession of the second half to cut the NewCath lead to 22-20.

NewCath rolls off a 22-2 run to go up 44-22. Subs for both teams play the final 3 or 4 minutes.

Brossart lacks size inside, threw it away a little too much, but scraped well and can knock down shots if open.

Football additions make this NewCath team much, much better. Kelly is a stedy defender, rebounder, and can finish. Cain can handle the ball well enough and adds some more muscle. Geisler dominated inside all game. Brossart second quarter run came when he was on the bench with two fouls and they could take the ball inside.

  17. In an attempt to make some sense of this thread.

Yes, the 9th is probably a little down this year from previous years. Mainly because top dog Boone County had several things happen that brought them back to the pack. And in the previous years BC, Notre Dame, NCC, Holy Cross and maybe 1 other team per year like a Holmes or St. Henry could actually play pretty well with down state competition. If you look back at past Cantrall or LIT rating the 9th's Top 5 teams were pretty much in the equal to any other regions Top 5 teams.

So this year is simply just a down year.
