  1. I agree if a team gets whipped in a game then they get over it and try to do better, what I argue is why press in the 4th quarter? If that is a coaching philosophy it is a new one to my knowledge. Another word for coaching philosophy could be no class because thats what it was. And why would you cry when you got beat 27, thats a respective whipping, there is a difference between 27 and 50+ points. And dont worry, nobody wants to stop scheduling Mason the way they did when Fleming was goin to the state tournament, thats not our Philosophy, we'll play and play hard, maybe get it handed to us but dont worry about that.
Amen brother! :thumb: Soon they forget.
  2. 2002-2003 Mason 106 Paris 66, Mason 107 Lewis Co 63, Mason 95, Deming 39

    2003-2004 Mason 84 St. Patrick 31, Mason 110 Clark Co 62

To name a few Kelly Wells-coached games.

I really don't remember that far back wasn't Mason Co state champs one year and state runner up the next? I was pretty young back then. Didn't those teams lead the state in scoring? I don't remember I was pretty young back then. Any of these teams from outside the region? I just don't remember.
  3. So, if your coaching philosophy is to press, and the press gets you a big lead, and you bring in your reserves, they're supposed to abandon the coaching philosophy because the other team is getting whipped? I don't get it.

Someone on another thread said something like this: When you win by 30, you've played a great game. When you win by 50, you have no class.

It's up to the other team to stop you. If they can't, too bad. You didn't hear me crying when Scott County beat up on the Royals a few weeks ago.

When someone takes you to the woodshed (figuratively speaking), you take your lumps, you work on the reasons you got the whipping. Hopefully, things will improve. If you have philosophical issues with the way a particular opponent plays, maybe you don't need to be scheduling them anymore (although I would hate to see the Fleming-Mason rivalry end just because the Mason JV beat up on the Fleming JV; I've always enjoyed the game atmosphere in the Fieldhouse as well as in the Den).

Speaking of class, (and at the risk of getting the thread shut down by a moderator) I thought that the Fleming student section's cheer was particularly classy.

I never saw Coach Wells run the score up on teams when he could've. I guess there is a different class at Mason now.
  4. Mason only dresses 10 varsity players. Five of them play JV - King (10th grade), Setty (10th grade), Tolle (10th grade), Browning (11th grade) and Stahl (11th grade). When the starters pick up fouls (Fleming County had 13 free throws in the first half and Mason County had none); those guys are forced to step up. While they're absolutely no match for Scott County and Lexington Catholic's second-string, they usually hold their own against the local teams.

Lots more freshmen are on the JV team; I got to the JV game last night with 3 or 4 minutes to play; the 9th and 10th graders were in the game then. I think the final score was something like 66 or 68 to 19.

I agree that Coach Messer does well with what he has; their kids play hard, but they have a tough time getting the ball in the basket and they tend to go up for shots in the paint without recognizing where the defenders are; hence the number of shots that they get blocked. Last night the Panthers only had 6 baskets in the first half and 8 more in the second half; a combination IMO of the way the game was called, poor shooting (28% for the game) and lots of blocked shots.

Masons varsity was absolutley no match for Scott co. or Lex Caths. 2nd string ,I was just complementing Masons young players ,wishing we had some coming like them. Some of Masons starters seem to not produce as much as all of the younger players on the bench also Scott co. and Lex Caths. 2nd string could win the 10th region hands down.

  5. We could not score against Mason ,even on break away opportunities,Mason young players King, Setty,Tolle,Browning and Stahl all stepped up for them when Turner,Miller,Pawsat got in foul trouble ,those guys could beat alot of varsity teams I have seen this year. We need to find a consistent scorer at Fleming, coach Messer does a fine job with what he has.

  6. I will give you that the big kids are underachieving. It is a mystery how Roth can score 21 or 19 with 15 or 16 rebounds in one game, and then average 4 or 5 points and 5 or 6 rebounds per game over the next five. It should never happen how either of the posts, Roth or Gray, should go scoreless for an entire game, like Tuesday night. Roth did have the Panthers first nine points, but he disappeared after that, only scoring two points the rest of the night. Consistancy is what the Panthers need out of their big guys.

What I won't give you is that the kids don't play hard. Just because they are not producing does not mean they are not playing hard. They don't want to lose, as many people seem to think. They work hard, they just make mistakes such as missed bunnies or stupid fouls that end up costing them and their team by the end of the game.

The reason is because the big kids did not improve their skills over the summer, basketball is second to football ,you can not only pick up a basketball during basketball season and expect to produce,Pressely played year around and was the most skilled player since Robbie Grahman.
