  1. I went to a recruiting seminar recently where there were representatives from D1, D2, D3, JUCO, and NAIA. A question was asked where college scholarship money goes and why. The answer was somewhat predictable, yet interesting. The answer was the scholarship money first goes to pitching—particularly good left handed pitchers. Pitchers in baseball can have more to do in the outcome of the game than any other position. There are 25 scholarship positions in a D1 team out of 35 roster spots. 15 or 16 of the scholarship players could be pitchers. The second position where scholarship money goes was a little surprising to me. I have always valued catchers; but the coaches said that they like to have a quality catcher when so many scholarship players are pitchers. They like to have a smart defensive catcher that can be a coach on the field. Their last answer for where money goes was a little different. Rather than answer the middle of the field—shortstop, centerfield, etc.—their answer was “speed.” I guess they feel that if they have quality players with speed, they can fit those players into where they need them.
Excellent points and I agree. At differing levels of play, SS, Pitchers and Catchers are critical. I feel that Catching in High School, is a key position.

A solid pitching staff, needs a Catcher to not only control the game but be able to handle a variety of pitches/locations. Pitchers can control the flow of the game but Catchers, dictate advancement and scoring position.

  2. There is alot more talent on this team than we've been led to believe. This cupboard isn't bare at all.
You've got too much youth and inexperience, to be a Top 25 team now. No pure shooter from the outside, other than Meeks. No 3-4 legitimate scoring threat, other than Patterson. No PG and one of the worst passing/decision making teams, in the nation.

I didn't say the cupboard was bare but it's not ripe enough for 25 wins, this season.

  3. Well it doesn't matter what I think, it matters what BCG thinks. He will play Porter over Vilarino just like he has played Porter over Liggins, even though Liggins is the "overall better player" with more athletic ability and talent. I think Gillispie prefers veteran experience, so Vilarino is going to have to do a lot to start over Porter for Billy G.
Once you see Liggins playing on defense, like he's capable of then I think he takes the PG role from Porter. Too often, Liggins allows his man to dribble penetrate and not turning, to the off hand or baseline.

Porter will at least attempt to turn, into a double-team. Offensively, certainly Liggins but "consistency" from both would make UK much, much better.

UK may need to look at a JUCO player, with experience to help for '09-'10 season. Liggins will get better but not sure he's a PG. Perhaps a very small 3 but got to handle, distribute and make better decisions at the PG.

  4. If you expect UK to stop the other team's point guards, why are you expecting a true point guard to solve UK's offensively problems and other teams not be able to stop UK's point guards like you are expecting UK to stop other team's point guards.
You can't run an offensive set with 4 players. Any team that will contend and require the defense to extend, while denying the perimeter will have a true PG.

If UK had any PG, who could dribble penetrate and then kick, not only would the post get more touches/scores, but it would allow more open 3's.

  5. In UK's system, the need for some offensive value from the PG, would help. Teams simply pick up Porter at half court and force a diagonal pass or bounce entry pass. I've wondered the same thing GT has raised, with regards to recruiting a PG.

Doesn't have to be great but needs 6-8ppg, can deny on the perimeter, stop dribble penetration and limit TO's, while running the half court set.

  6. Give South Carolina the credit, as they hit the boards when needed and made the critical 3's. Dribble penetration has hurt the 'Cats all year, in trying to stop on one end and not getting from their own PG, on the other.

In time, I think Liggins and Miller will score but they're adjusting to this team. Porter and Harris offer nothing of value offensively. I'll disagree and say UK lacks offensive talent, other than Meeks and Patterson. Stevenson can give you some help but only 2 real threats to score, makes it much easier to defend.

    Work in progress.

  7. Maybe, just maybe, they bring it on themselves.

    :isurrender::isurrender::isurrender:

I've always been told, taught and believe the time I spent worrying about others, is time lost in correcting my own faults.

Elliott County won this game and Coach Mays played 14 players. To make the All A is testament of endless hours of practice and hard work. Congratulations to both Elliott County and Whitefield Academy. Best of luck the remainder of the season.

  8. Not upsetting to me at all - I have no dog in this fight, just making what appears to be a fairly astute observation.

I would have felt that in this game, clearly defined as a EC win after three periods, that perhaps he might have interspersed the aforementioned players along with Nickell, Morgan, and Flannery to allow a better match-up for the defeated Whitefield bunch, and provide those guys some meaningful experience in this "A" State tournament. To play those guys 1 minute (which might have been actually much less than a minute) seems kind of embarassing, or better yet - very insecure - on the part of Coach Mayes.

Who knows what other opportunities he will have to do this in the future. Just seems like it would have been a nicer, more classy, touch.

There is that word "class" again. It amazes me how often this word gets associated with Elliott County and their team. A coach who plays all of his Roster, in an All A game and wins, has no class because some get less time than others. :ohbrother:I'm at a loss for words, on how we reach this conclusion.

A very good team All A team gets a win, in pursuit of a State title but yet some dwell on the playing time. Would 2 minutes or maybe 3 minutes been the proper length of time or would that, have taken the 10 other player minutes. I'll answer it, fault would have been assigned also.

  9. Not to belabor the point but Craig Faulkener played 3 minutes; Nick Lewis, Daniel Fraley, Ceith Griffith, and Seth Dickerson each played 1 minute each - 1 minute!

If he's not going to play these guys some meaningful minutes in a game like this where they could have matched up better with a team trailing by 60 - When is he going to play them???????

So it's upsetting you, that on a 14 player roster, everyone played. These young men, who may/may not get considerable playing time on JV, got in a All A State game and have a chance to be part of contending program.

8 of the 14, played more than 10 minutes in this game.

  10. A few of the boys are currently working out , but they need a head coach put into place so they can pull together as a team.

Copley has turned his back on these boys, even though they had nothing to do with his dismissal. Copley has a lot of growing up to do. Good Luck Greenup County.

So you're saying Coach Copley should be in the Pikeville weight room and on their school grounds, even though he's been hired by another school system?

I don't think that is a logical approach.

  11. Someone mentioned that the starters played the WHOLE third quarter. EC was up 44-7 at the half...why would Coach Mays play his starters that long with a 37 point lead? State tournament or not, there's no need to try and humiliate the opposing team. The game was well in hand at halftime. No reason for them to even play more than say 2 minutes of the third.

Everyone knows EC isn't very deep. Shouldn't coach Mays be trying to develop some depth rather than worrying about letting his players get their numbers?

Your constant analysis of the time the Elliott County players are in the game, is perplexing. If they played 20 min. in a 32 minute game, why is this an issue.

A coach develops talent in practice and he plays who he wants. I'm not certain but maybe these young men, who like all the other All A teams are excited about playing in the State. Perhaps the most important aspect of the game is not the minutes played.

  12. Don't you believe that in games like this the coach with the dominant team actually has control of the outcome, not the coach that is over matched? I will agree that teams with this desperate of talent should not play each other. But, they played it, so the PRP coach should have controlled it.
You can't control the desire of student-athletes to play, when give the chance. When a reserve enters the game and observes a teammate on the block, open he will pass it.

When you have the ability to get every rebound and uncontested dribble penetration, they will do it. Short of saying, "don't give effort" with two so different teams, the margin will increase.

When a team is 0 for the season and has such a wide point differential, than these type of games will happen. Think about this, 116 points is a little over 3.5 points per minute against a team, which has trouble stopping their opponent.

  13. Agreed a wide margin, but 95 points? It isn't the right thing to do and the coach could control it.
I didn't see the game but I posted some of PCA's scores (see post #31).

It's obvious they are over-matched at times and incapable of scoring much against solid teams. It takes two affect the outcome like this and perhaps they did/didn't let up on the throttle, I don't know. For us to say classless or lay the blame on PRP, isn't the case.

When a Varsity program has a team, which can only score 21 but allows a significant amount of points scored, one could ask the question why. The answer is so the student-athletes can play, which works both ways for all teams involved.

  14. Usually the sign of a small school who has ebbs and flows of athletes that come through the school. There are always ways to keep the score to a much lesser differential while not patronizing the other team. Comments throughout this thread that states otherwise must be written by those who have not coached basketball.
I've stated on BGP many times, when scores like these happen it's the result of two factors. One team is very good and the other, is incapable of stopping them.

When starters leave the game from the very good team, you will have reserves who want to play. When starters leave from the team not capable of stopping the other, they too want to play. The result is a game, in which you have a lopsided result magnified by the differing talent.

We can't label one Coach classless, because his team can score and then say nothing about the other Coach, who allows his team to get beat by 95. My point in all of this, simply that sometimes regardless of game plan, the result is going to be a wide margin.
