Slaughter was the top vote-getter in the C-J All-State team, voted on by coaches.
Thats cool. Your point being?
Allen was the top vote getter for the Mr. Basketball award voted on by the coaches.
-
I know who votes----I voted and it wasn't for Allen. Great player he was my number 2. Settle down a little "bell", your boy won and that is all that matters.
To start over--Great job Mr. Allen on an outstanding career.
I'm chilled.
Just really bothers me how some ppl act like the kid cant play at all. I mean I can understand if you dont think he is the best. But at the very least give the kid his credit.
My last few posts were not neccessarily directed just at you, as much as to a few others who have denied Allen the credit he deserves.
-
Great Kid, great person and did a great job being a model player and citizen for the state to be proud of. With that said all I mean is "Mr. Basketball" should be given to the best basketball player in the state. Great career Walt--good luck at the next level. As far as your "know soooo much comment", if you knew anything about the process you would know that coaches become the biggest politicians around as soon as they get beat out of the tourney, but thanks for your insight.
First off.....This award shouldnt go to the best basketball player..... it should go to the best highschool basketball player. There may be some players who will have better college careers then Walt, but none had has great a highschool career as Mr. Allen. I mean just look at what he accomplished. Mr. Allen knows how to play the game and play it with class.
He may not be 6'9 and can dunk like a mad man or shoot the lights out, but he plays the game the way it is supposed to be played, and he meant more to SL then alot of ppl realize.
Secondly....So are you saying that Walt Allen had the best politician in Wright. I mean comeon....... the other kids had their coaches pushing them too. I totally understand the politics of this whole deal, but that isnt why he won the award. Every other coach who had a Mr. Basketball candidate was doing the same thing.
By the way..... who votes for this award? Oh yeah.... that state coaches! I would think they know more then any of us on this board. If Allen is good enough for them, then he is good enough for me.
-
Get over it yourself ... he's entitled to his opinion.
Just because it's the minority opinion doesn't mean he's wrong.
LOL. I was wonderin when you would be commenting.
Maybe that minority opinion isnt wrong. Then again maybe it is.
I would think 2 POY awards, 1st team All State honors, State Tourney MVP, a State Championship Ring, and a Mr. Basketball award would say that the minority opinion is completely wrong. :sssh:
I mean give the kid some credit. Not only does he have all that to boast, but he is an A+ student and person, as well as a true leader on and off the court. There is no one more deserving to represent our state as Mr. Basketball then Walt.
Walt was the best HIGHSCHOOL basketball player in the state, all things considered. For anyone who STILL wants to deny that...... well that is exactly what they are in..... denial.
You are right though...... everyone is entitled to their opinion, regardless of how ill supported it might be.
-
Case and point this year, the best basketball player doesn't always win the award.
I guess these kind of comments will never stop!! Get over it.... Walt may not be the best "basketball" player, but he has the hardware to prove he is the best "highschool basketball" player, emphasis on HIGHSCHOOL. Mr. Basketball is a HIGHSCHOOL award! Walt won it. End of story!
I find it funny how many ppl on these boards think they know soooo much more.... yet this kid has 2 POY awards and a Mr. Basketball award. I guess whoever votes for these awards must be complete basketball idiots.
Congrats Walt! Not a more deserving candidate! :thumb:
-
Ill take that bet. No way he will win it. Nice player but there are 3 or 4 that are better.
You werent one of the many who said the same thing about Walt Allen are ya?
:sssh:
JK..... I didnt mean this as any kind of attack. Just playing around and poking at all the Allen doubters. They dont seem to be posting as much since Allen has taken home 2 POY awards and a Mr. Basketball title.

Not sure if you are plucking at the fact that Lexinton Catholic beat Rock 48-20 or not but Rock was down only 1 point at halftime to them. Rock had 10 players playing both ways after all the injuries that took a toll on them. Rock even had the same 10 players on special teams, whereas Lexington Catholic was platooning on offense, defense and special teams. Not many teams would've played Lexington Catholic that close on their turf with the same 10 guys all night, heck Bowling Green couldn't do it with more. I look forward to a Bell-Rock Region game this year.
I wasnt...... just saying I'd rather see Bell in the semi game against the almighty Highlands then to see Rock in the semis over Bell any year.
I too look forward to a Bell Rock region game....... most likely the championship. It seems Bell has had alot of trouble in the past 6 years or so beating the Rock in the region tourney so I hope this is the year that changes.
-
So does Highlands. :D
I wouldnt mind seeing a Bell-Highlands semifinal again.
Better then a Rock-Lex Cath final like we saw this past season!
-
Rock and Bell have one thing going for them that the others do not that are listed amongst the top 5 with them such as Highlands-Lexington Catholic-Covington Catholic. The semi's is played on grass this year whomever comes out of that region.
They have another thing going for them. Both of them return nearly their ENTIRE team.
-
I think Rockcastle or Bell Co could make an argument to be included in that list. Both squads return a ton of talent!
-
Please refresh my memory. How many Big East teams are in the Final Four right now? Thank you.
I think there are 2 SEC teams though!
-
well the sweet sixteen is the state championship, but what kills me is lex cath beat 8 of the teams that were in the sweet sixteen. it just seems to me that the best teams arent in the tourney. although it has to be setup this way it just seems wierd and wrong like this.
If the best teams arent in the tourney then the only ppl that can be held responsible are those supposed "best teams."
Teams that are supposedly "better" or "the best" should beat the teams that are winning the regions and getting to the Sweet 16, then they will make it to the tourney and it will be a better tournament.
I mean think about it. What teams at the tourney this year werent that good? You had 16 teams.
Russell
Graves
South Laurel
John Hardin
Johnson Central
Jefferson Town
Shelby Co
Christian Co
Warren Central
Mason Co
Apollo
Cov Cath
Hazard
Madison Central
Boyle Co
PRP
Out of the 16.....7 are ranked in the BGP top 20.
That doesnt include Madison Central, who had to win a region 11 that included 4 BGP top 20 teams (Henry Clay, Scott Co, Lex Cath, Bryan Station), and was a top 25 team themselves at seasons end according to several other rankings.
That doesnt include a tough Mason Co team, who had to win a region that included BGP top 20 team Pendelton Co.
That doesnt include Apollo and Graves, two very solid teams that, although not ranked, proved they deserved to be there and could play with the best.
So technically, according to the rankings, you had 8 top 25 teams, 3 solid ball clubs that could play with anyone, and 5 weaker teams.
The only teams that one could consider weak, or that had an easy road or weak region would be Hazard, Johnson Central, Russell, Christian Co, and Boyle. I would say Graves, but we saw what Graves could do, and you have to give Boyle some credit. They were a team that was hot at the time, just not athletic enough to compete on that big a stage.
My point is this. The teams that get to the region may not be the most talented teams in the state, but they are the teams that are playing the best basketball at the time (except for the traditional weak regions, which is only 4 or 5 out of 16). It may be a boring brand of basketball that doesnt include high flying dunks, fast breaks, and 80 points, but it is winning basketball.

As we all struggled through some of the opening round games of this year's Sweet Sixteen while sitting cheek-to-cheek in our $13.50 seats, eating our $10 Smoked Sausage and Pop, after having hiked in from the outer forty after paying $8 for that parking privilege, after leaving our $75 hotel rooms, I'm not sure that the mid-season Fifth-Third Classic held at Lexington Catholic isn't the far superior tournament providing superior bang for your basketball buck.
While the Sweet-Sixteen has the mystique and atmosphere, the 5th/3rd has the quality teams and top flight competition making it a much better basketball tournament, with no window dressing teams nor restrictions to invite only one great team from each regionand no obligation to invite teams from notably weak regions.
The Fifth-Third will obviously never take the place of the "Greatest Moneymaker in Hoops" (nor should it), but it is undeniably a far more competitive basketball tournament with a field comprised of top-flight competition and is dollar for dollar your best basketball competition buy.
You make some nice points, but........
In case you didnt notice, the teams in the Sweet 16 dont get invited. They EARN their way there. Every team in the state has a chance to get to the state tourney, but they must do so on the court.
That is the beautiful thing about the Sweet 16, or any playoff system. It isnt about who we think is the best team, or what team looks the best on paper. Its about which team proves it on the court.
-
Will never happen...should never happen.
There's a better chance of a selection committee naming 64 teams to advance to a KHSAA postseason, than class systems.
As it is now, how many teams do make the KHSAA postseason.
This would include the regional tournament, which eventually wittles down to the Sweet 16.
How many districts are there in KY HS bball multiplied by 2? That would give us the answer wouldnt it?

There is an article on cardinalsports.com about Millers committment. However, you have to be a member of the Rivals.com network in order to view it.
-
Well i'm 6'2'' and a little more and Profitt isnt taller than me, so i'll say since we're talking about no more than an inch , he's a solid 6'1'' and 3quarters. A very possible barely 6'2'' but anymore than that and I'll be 6'3'' . He is not 6'3''
I would agree. I was simply giving whoever made out the program the benefit of the doubt. LOL.
-
Folks lets get this back to the game or start a thread about who is better.:irked:
Totally agree. I think I even recommended that earlier. The Mr. Basketball thread is not here.
-
His opinion is just as relevant as yours and mine.
Wasn't I? I've characterized both as inconsistent, up-and-down teams ... their season-long performance indicates that.
I never said his opinion was irrelevant..... I said that the fact that his opinion coincides with you opinion doesnt make you dead on accurate anymore then if my opinion is coincided with someone elses. Just because you agree with what someone says doesnt mean they are dead on accurate.
You also characterized them as NOT top 25. I think they proved they were.
-
Miller has indeed verballed to UofL as a preferred walk-on.
Congrats to a great shooter and a great athlete. Good luck at the next level, and make the most of a once in a lifetime oppurtunity that few get, and many dream of.

I've stood next to these guys and this sounds like the closest estimate. Allen maybe 6'5 but no taller.(I'm around6'2 and hes not that much taller than me). Profitt is about 6'1'' rounded up to 6'3'' in this measurment.
I'm 6'1 and Proffitt is absolutely taller then me.
Like I said before...... 6'3, but no more. More realistically 6'2 and then some.
-
Also.... congrats to Mr. Allen.
He continues to silence all his critics.
-
How tall is Hammonds? He is at least two inches taller than Proffitt. I thought that Allen and Hammonds were both 6'4" and Proffitt 6'2".
Congrats to all that made the list!
I have stood side by side next to all 3.
Proffitt is 6'3, but no taller. Allen is 6'5, at the most. Hammonds is around 6'4. He is a little taller then Proffitt, but not 2 inches. It may look like it, but he isnt.

As someone who has traveled the state this year and watched numerous games, I rank Allen as the fourth best senior player I've seen. I've seen A.J. Slaughter play five times and feel he is the best player in the state. PRP's Vincent Crutcher and Eastern's Robert Buckner are close behind Slaughter. I watched Allen play all four games in the state tournament last year and have seen him four times this year. He ranks behind the other three I mentioned, barely edging out Owensboro Catholic's Jay Ivey.
UKBellCo. How many of these players have you seen play? Allen and who else? If you haven't seen all five play, you can't say with any credibility that Allen is the best player in the state. He's just the best player YOU'VE seen play this year. And Allen may score 20 on Indiana, but it will likely be 20 in both games combined. I'm not sure why you're taking this one personal. From what I've read on here, I'd say westsider has seen as much if not more basketball games than anyone else on BGP. When comes to evaluating players and teams, he is to high school basketball what letabrotherspeak is to UK basketball -- usually dead on accurate.
I have watched both Allen and Slaughter, and considering this debate is about them, thats the only 2 I need to have watched.
I am really not taking it personal...... it just blows my mind how ppl refuse to give Allen the props he deserves, and it seems that its primarily because he isnt the best athlete or college recruit.
Westsider may have seen a million games..... that is essentially irrelevant considering I know plenty of ppl that have seen more basketball then I have but don't know diddly. I have also known ppl who have watched less basketball and know a ton.
Just because you think he is dead on accurate because you agree with his opinions is also irrelevant.
He wasnt too dead on accurate about Mason Co. or Madison Central.

I agree with your 1st and 2nd spot picks, but disagree with your comment about Proffit better than Allen.
Allen is a workhorse, I would have loved to see the kid on every team of mine. He does so many small things that results in big things.
I'd have to agree.
What makes Allen a great player cant neccessarily be found in a stat line or game report. Hustle, heart, leadership, sportsmanship........ all these things Allen is the best in, and too say that they dont count when considering who is the best basketball player really shows us why sports is in a decline.
The best player isnt always the guy who can shoot the best, or handle the ball the best, or etc etc etc.
Walt Allen named Mr. Basketball

I will totally agree that a big reason he won this award was becuz of his Sweet 16 performance last season. But to say that his senior season was a flop, or that he isnt deserving is just funny.
I know you arent saying that..... but a few have, and its laughable.
