  1. ... I wouldn't say that Beechwood benefited more from the calls. The ump was pretty darn consistent all night. Combs was able to hit that outside corner a bit more giving the appearance that Beechwood was getting the calls.

Side note, on the batter's interference call on Elkus, did anyone see the catcher attempt a throw at all?

I think we agree. I am not saying the ump favored Beechwood. I am suggesting that Beechwood put the ball in those spots way more often. Niehaus was efficient and more "in-the-(real)-zone". The benefit was that Dixie had to swing at those pitches because the ump was calling them. Hard to hit the outside pitch off the plate.

I was very confused about the batter interference call. No real attempt to throw, and I thought the batter (Elkus I think) stayed in his box.

  2. ... Okay, I going to say this and you all know that all year long I have been on Blues side but tonight from my seat the HP Blue was calling a strike that looked to me to be wide all night long. Now I have no problem with it at all, as he was consistently calling that pitch on both teams a strike until Elkus came to bat with two outs and men on 2nd and 3rd with the score tied and two outs. ...

You infer that the ump should have called the last (outside) pitch a strike against Elkus. I thought the bad calls tended to benefit Beechwood most of the game, as they were missing the zone more often, throwing 25 more pitches and hitting 3 batters. In the first inning Elkus was the victim of one of those obviously bad calls, and he subsequently swang at bad pitches until the last inning when he regained his discipline and drew a big walk. Apropo.

What a game! Both teams were fantastic and displayed good on-the-field sportsmanship. I walked away proud to be a Dixie fan.

Tongue in cheek - stats for this thread thus far show 12 comments from Guru and TOG about irrelevant sideshow crap. Today I am embarrassed to be a Bluegrasspreps fan.

  3. Maybe the lack of size hurts them on the boards, which in turn, hurts them as far as starting a break?

Great point. Pike would make a difference... Rebound, turn, throw over the defenders with quarterback arm strength and accuracy. Lorenzen threw a lot of incredible release passes in his day, especially to Smith.

Credit Chevy with scheduling strong competition. Tough stretch for his men.

  4. I thought the technical at the end of the game was a very, very quick whistle. The Camel player was hit after the shot. You should let the players decide the game.

For those of you not there, Camels down 3 with 20 seconds to go. Jared White has a good look at a 3 and gets bumped after the shot. Camels Assistant Coach yells, "He got hammered!" and is hit with a technical. Boone hits both free throws. Game over.

There was one really bad call in the first half where Campbell County should have been given the "and one" bucket, but only received the ball out of bounds due to bad judgement of "on the floor". For the rest of the game the Campbell crowd rode the refs hard. At the end, the Assistant Coach(es) were on their feet jumping up and down yelling "he got hammered" repeatedly with a ref only a few feet away.

It was an appropriate bench technical, albeit a missed call on the three point shooting foul. Russell was clearly annoyed with his staff, as he should have been.

  5. I didn't pick up on it....maybe after the excitement of the prior night, this one seemed boring...don't know.

I saw Zeke yucking it up with his mates... certainly nothing negative to pick on. I noticed him tweak his ankle/foot late in the first quarter. After building a second quarter lead there was ample opportunity to give him a rest.

There are plenty of positive things to focus on with this year's Dixie squad. The first quarter was one of the more entertaining 8 minutes of basketball you can expect to see. Well played by both teams:clap:

  6. Either way, the kid needs to learn to be the bigger person in that situation. All he's doing is adding even more fuel to the fire. I hate to point things out like this, especially when it comes to a high school KID, but someone seriously needs to sit down and talk to this young man about his actions.

I saw NO taunting or smiling at the opponents. I saw a kid having fun with his teammates, who are also smiling and enjoying their success. It's easy to understand why negative opinions are abound based on past behavior. I am glad to see the joyful emotions versus the potential reactions that could come from the harrasment he gets from the opposing fans. Negative (intense) reactions in the past have led to foul trouble for Zeke.

  7. ....Stansberry had an uncharistic shooting night ....

Having been impressed with his shooting mechanics the past few years, I noticed last night that he wasn't squaring his shoulders to the basket. He will zero in and should indeed be another scoring threat for the Colonels.

What surprised me the most was Dixie pressing out of the gate, and throwing in a few zone looks. Not their typical modus operandi. I think it surprised the Cougars as well.

  8. The only call I can really rememeber as controversial would be the foul on Pike where he grabbed Robinson around the waist.

I think Pike fouled prior to grabbing the shirt, albeit he did hold on for quite a while as he fell to the floor.

I thought the refs did a good job of communicating with one another, including stopping to discuss a few situations before making their final decisions. Tough job getting this type of high caliber game so early in the season.

Overall great game to watch. 5 bucks well spent:thumb:

  9. Was available immediately after the game. just go to nkysports.com and click on webcasts.

NOT! Really wanted to watch this game online, but it did not work during the game and the entry disappeared after the game. If there is a secret link or another place to see the archive, please do tell. Still want to watch it.

  10. At the trophy presentation, none of the members of the TEAM came out to get their trophy...??

To put this in perspective, the Ryle lady's did the same thing, but actually a bit more disrespectfully. Crittendon was at the table as she had just been given the MVP placque. She took the trophy by necessity, but appeared unwilling. One of the official presenters had to carry the game ball over to Coach Oliverio who was more interested in going to the locker room.

The more appropriate response would have been to shake hands and show some appreciation for those who worked hard to put on a good show in the BOK environment.

None of the kids on the Ryle bench showed the slightest interest in the trophy, the game ball, or the crowd that was there to support them.

"Sore losing" was the theme of the day.

  11. IMO, seems like some on here are confusing "swag" with "dirty". There is a difference. Holmes has the swag. They've earned it.

I guess we can say that when you are winning it is called "swag", and when you are losing it is called "dirty". Similar behavior... different label.

In either case, there is a line that is crossed where too much "swagger" or too much "thugishness" by a few individuals can cause an entire team to be labeled with a negative reputation.

Too bad for the good guys on both of these teams. They deserve better.

  12. 3:27 left in the fourth quarter NCC called a full timeout that let Boone get their energy and wits back. NCC had outstanding defensive intensity and momentum, Boone was sucking air, clearly fatigued, and looking lost.

The timeout did not seem to benefit NCC in any way, but Boone got a chance to rest their legs. That opportunity to get a second wind cleared their funk and they were able to fight the rest of the battle.

Make Boone call that timeout! Heck, they may have waited too long and NCC may have been able to get a bigger lead with the momentum they had.

  13. ... Does Scott have anything that separates their own school from everybody elses? No. Do they have the same atheltic resources and facilities available to them? No. ....

Scott recently installed new lights on the baseball field. They are unique compared to Dixie to have the pool, a wonderful cross country facility, and a separate soccer field (not shared with football).

All Kenton County schools are blessed with funding for facilities improvement. Several projects are going on simultaneously and all schools are in the queue for their fair share. They haven't had to stop for the economy.

Hmm, seems like a lot of good, positive things happening in the Kenton County School system.

  14. What a great game but I have one question. On the Holmes inbounds pass with about 24 secs left. The ball was thrown into the back court and the player looked like he jumped from the front court and caught the ball in the air before landing in the back court. Wouldn't that be considered over and back? It doesn't matter now and I congratulate Holmes on a great win but I was just wondering if anyone else saw the play.

It is not over and back on an inbounds play.

    Great win for the Bulldogs!!!
