I just know what kids have told me when asked how they can afford to go to Trinity. I also ask them if they were thinking about Trinity before their representatives showed up and their answer is no. Their parents hadn't started to make preparation for this enormous sacrafice that they would entail. Most kids that go to Trinity know it years in advance and start making arrangements for the tuition. As far as TaShawn goes. I'm not saying that he would have been a savior for any particular school. I am saying that he had the type ability to make a quick difference in a schools football team. You are absolutely right that more kids leave catholic schools to go to public schools than kids leaving public schools to go to catholic high school. Most of those kids leave because their parent don't want to continue to pay the tuition or the kid doesn't want to go to school with all boys or girls. Of the kids that go to public middle school, how many make a decision to go to Trinity because of football and they have been contacted by a Trinity representative? On the other hand, how may catholic middle school kids will go to a public school because they have been contacted by a representative from a public high school? I think the numbers in those areas would prove my point.

Alumni will give to a program that demonstrates the ability to win on the field and/or court. Without quality athletes it is hard to produce wins. People don't give or support just because that is their beloved high school. They want to see a winner.

I can understand some of the schools feeling cheated because of the athletes that the parochial schools are getting. I don't think the public schools would be as upset if Trinity and St X would focus on getting players from their feeder schools and leave those students and players in public schools alone. I follow little league football in Jefferson County and see Trinity representatives at them often. I can say that ST X representatives are not as visible at these games. These players that Trinity attracts are public school students. I think what the public school ADs are saying is it is tough to compete against the tradition and mystique of a Trinity and getting tougher. With Male at least there is a chance to compete because it is SUPPOSED to be tougher to get in if you haven't been in the traditional program. At Trinity and ST X it is no holds barred. All comers are welcome. " Financial Aid" is available especially if you run a 4.5 or are 6' 3" and weigh 240. I don't agree with the boycott but I do understand the frustration. Think about this. TaShawn McBroom came from a public school. If he goes to one of those schools think how much more competitive that school becomes. Would Trinity still have been good without him? Most definitely but that school that TaShawn went to would have that one player that could have put them over the top. Given them the recognition to get the school's name in the paper to start attracting more kids. Let's face it kids want to be recognized. Go back and look at the Saturday morning editions of the CJ for this past fall and see who is on the front page of the sports section? That is tough to compete against.
