  1. Johnson Central ends their season with a tough loss. But JC only looses one senior and has all five starters back for the 08-09 season.

Best of luck to E-Town in the rest of the state tournament.

E'town has some exceptional talent, especially in the Dickerson girl and Alex Jones, the daughter of Charles Jones who was a standout at the University of Louisville.

  2. High Schools are not for JUST the college kid.

There is a large percentage of the HS population that is JUST AS IMPORTANT as them and deserves to have the school also focus on things that they NEED.

It seems the discussion of this thread is only concerned about the college-bound kid and not the kid who is 4 or 5 grade levels behind in reading and looking at a factory job their whole life.

It is as essential to our society that the HS's educate those kids as it is the college-bound kids.

    Let's not forget that.

As an educator, I am very aware of the strata of Kentucky's high school population. And it is imperative that we prepare each and every one of them to be productive citizens and successful human beings. My concern is no less for the vo-tech student than the college-bound, honor student. I am just saying that our young people in Kentucky be given every opportunity to advance their education and life preparation, no matter their capacity to learn or socio-economic status, by being offered the best and precise advice possible for them to make correct choices. Since this thread was discussing earlier the short-comings of college entrance exams, I was commenting on the value of the SAT and ACT as the greater assessment tools for college-bound students.

  3. ACT is overrated too. You know that Garfield was a President. So what? How does that help you in life. You can graph a point on a 4 quadrant plot? So what? How does that help you in life?

All testing is going to have weaknesses.

And a HUGE problem with ACT is what you mentioned, it is timed. But many resource students have it in their IEP that testing time is not limited. So by giving them a timed test you are now violating their IEP which is a legal document. Which is going to give there?

The proponent of CATS will say that the ACT tests knowledge. CATS test what you can do with that knowledge. As an employer, which would you prefer? The smart person that you have no idea the quality of work they can produce. Or the person you know can produce quality work.

As an employer, I'd choose the "smart" person for obvious reasons. At least, I would have an objective, nationally-normed assessment of his knowledge. Often the ACT gets a bad rap when comparing or discussing state testing. And the SAT is mentioned even less. But, what is important to a dean of admissions in considering the application of a high school senior to his college of choice? Granted, there are exceptions allowed for special students, but for the remainder of college-bound students, "What will really get me into a good school?" is still the question. In viewing school applications and granting college scholarships, I am more concerned with the student's nationally-normed test scores, class rank, G.P.A., AP classes taken, extra-curricular and community activities and interviews. The SAT which measures critical thinking skills and the ACT, a more curriculum-based test, are by far the most popular assessment tools used in this process. And both tests now offer an optional writing test. All four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. accept the ACT and some colleges (especially the Big Ten schools) require the writing essay as part of its score. While the ACT is popular in the Midwest, the SAT has been more widely used on the east and west coasts. So, indeed, I am a proponent of these tests and am excitied that our Kentucky high school juniors will be taking the ACT beginning in 2008.

  4. Well apparently the contract isn't written that way, or else I'm sure Jurich wouldn't have asked Barnhart. So I have to say tough for those poor little Cards. :D:D

My Cards are not poor, neither are they little. The Gator Bowl and winning the Orange Bowl helped put revenue in the coffers. Jurich, the National AD of the Year, is not asking Barnhart to consider the Monday night slot because they are not discussing the game's time personally with each other; they are talking with ESPN - who, incidentally would like the game played on Monday night. I'm listening to the Lachlan McClain sports' show on WHAS at this very moment and this was the explanation given by Lachlan. Apparently, that time slot would have been great for both UL and UK since Florida State jumped at it for three years in a row. I don't care when it is played because I will be there cheering for my team. Go Cards!

  5. Looked like a really cool atmosphere...UL does a nice job with their "white-outs" and "black out" themes.

Do they give shirts or sell shirts as people come in for those games?

    Excellent effort by the Cards.

The run for the BE crown should be interesting.

I saw Pitino's suit and busted out laughing.

Was that the Colonel Sanders look? Or was it Boss Hawg at the Boar's Nest after a year on Atkins Diet?

We fans purchased the shirts ahead of time @ $10 each at the J.D. Becker sports' stores. Also $2 of each sale went toward the Daniel Pitino Foundation which I thought was a very nice gesture. So the "white-out" idea not only showed solidarity among us fans, it proved Pitino was a good sport and willing to endorse the idea by wearing white. He said that the only reason he changed suits was because he spilled Diet Pepsi on it during half-time or he would have worn it for the entire game. So much for the spin by the media that he changed suits to fire up the players in the second half for the win. I think the players' defense took care of that. Go Cards!

  6. Any ideas on who the next coach will be? They have some good assistants. WIll any of them step forward?

    Hopefully James Webb will apply.

Someone from the 5th Region said that three names were being tossed around down there. Paul Gray, the former superintendent's son and Marty and

Crad Jaggers, sons of the former football coach, Joe Jaggers.

  7.

LOL...The kid is 15. And people wondering if he can play at the next level, thats funny.

If college Coaches didn't think a kid could play, then they wouldn't offer. He is good now, and will only get better.

Yes a soph but will be 17 in March....How much more will he grow???

  8. I saw today where he will be on the bench for the game aganist Purdue as long as he doesn't reak any more rules. He mau be back for the Marshall game. I want to see if Rick plays the Chichester kid (football player) on Saturday!

On a talk radio show in Louisville tonight, Petino said that Chichester may get a few minutes of playing time on Saturday. Chicester is not only a good football player, but he was a decent high school basketball player and even thought of trying two sports in college. Purdue, Pitt, and Illinois even recruited him to play basketball, but he chose UL and football instead. So, it would seem that he is a lot more than a big body to replace Caracter in practice. Hopefully, he can soon learn the plays and keep the team rolling until Caracter, Palacios and Padgett eventually return. Having four big men that can go inside will make UL very strong and competitive again.

  9. Great player he is neck and neck with Clarence Thompson for the best to play for the Eagles in the past 25 years. And with that neither could carry Mayo's jock. No disrespect intended but you guys are comparing apples and oranges.

I say all of this and I am not a huge fan of Mayo and a huge fan of both Thompson and Hall but facts are facts.

My post was for information only and to answer the question of who from the 16th region has played D-1 and (could have) played in the NBA. It was in no way meant to compare Mayo to other present/former players from the 16th.

  10. Sorry I have to post this again but what is the word were the UL fans doing storming the field. Will someone that was there tell how many it really was because it was hard to see they cut away from it.

Just got home from the game and the fourth quarter was awesome. Scoring the last 17 points of the game; the pass to Harry Douglas and then the field goal kick by Art Carmody to win the game was so appropriate for these two seniors. And...we stormed the field because Art Carmody made NCAA history tonight by scoring the most field goals by a kicker - not to mention that it was his first field goal that actually was a game winning kick.

  11. Hopefully, they'll be able to keep the home. I remember reading back when the show first started that many of the families were having to sell the homes because the payments were so high.

According to the tv news last night, Fifth Third Bank had so many donated funds that the old house's mortgage was paid off with money to spare. The new house with the pool and high tech wing for Patrick is valued at over $2 mil which is completely paid for. The property taxes will be about $10,000 a yr. plus monthly utilities, etc. which I think the family can manage. Also, the new UL band practice field's cost of $200,000+ is paid for. With the added free scholarships and other amenities, the family should be able to maintain their future. What a heart-warming story. Makes us all proud to be Kentuckians. I think even the show's staff who oversees these emotional makeovers all the time was super-impressed with Louisville and its surrounding communities. Can you imagine what a Thanksgiving celebration the Hughes will have in their new home next week?

  12. So today was the reveal of the new house...The Hughes' were overwhelmed. Im so glad I got to go and be a part of it. The house is beautiful!! They said it's value is well over $1 millon. The show is going to air in February, and I've heard it's going to be a 2-hour special. I have some pics I'd love to post, but they're too big. :irked:

Also heard on the radio today that this episode was so successful that it will be the show's Emmy nominee.

  13. Real funny kitten fans. All this talk from a team who is going to be a double digit underdog. kittens win one mediocre bowl game and now they are ready to challenge top ten teams. It won't be much longer and I will welcome all of you back to reality.

Why don't we make up a list of UK's top 10 excuses? I agree with you and wonder if they would think it was just as funny.

  14. They were to play today at 10:15 PDT but the schedule got messed up and they missed a game last night. Due to flight schedules, it would have been their last game anyway today win or lose. Don't know how individuals did because the website doesn't list high point like Vegas did. Anyway, shooter must already be gone, think other DS teams are finished also. Tourney is over today.

  15. Let's be honest, there was no comparison in the level of play of these two teams in high school. No offense to North Hardin, but Trinity is another level.

I totally agree. That is why I can't equally rank North Hardin's Woodson side by side with Brohm. I realize this is not high school football anymore and Andre has more experience in college ball, but Brohm was always able to get into Woodson's head back when... Especially when North played Trinity that first game of the season each year. Ouch!

  16. Are there two better QB's in one state this year than the two KY products? It's exciting and should make for one heck of a college season in the bluegrass state!

I hope it's exciting, but Brohm went undefeated against him when they played North Hardin every year in high school.

  17. Its a shame that the game will not be on National TV. However, I think it hurts UK more than UL. UK needs all the spot light it can get, if UK was to beat UL, then I'm sure Mitch would want it on National TV. For UL, just another game really. I'm sure we will be able to watch the game on a local channel so it really does not matter to me. UK needs to make a good showing in this game and actually win one for a change..... I suspect that UL will win by 10 points. Just wondering when this "mitch" erra will officially be over and both schools can get back to doing what we all want. Competing and acheiveing great things.....

The Courier-Journal online, July 9, says that the game will be on national tv: ESPN Classic, Sept. 15., 7:30 p.m.
