  1. I did say he was reasonable ? But there is no mistaking a majority of his positions fall on the left. Habib is very interesting read on here and has sound reasoning. I just thought that particular post brought nothing to the convo.

In my opinion that's the problem with much of the political discussion going on now. You're either with us or against us. Anyone not to the right of Sean hannity is considered left wing. Only an extremely right or left leaning person would call Habib left or right leaning based on his posts. It hinders discussion greatly in my opinion. Discussion if ideas is one of the great aspects of this site and forum. Not discussion of people. Imo

  2. I'm not going to lie I'm a little disappointed in you, you are usually one of the more reasonable people from the left on this board. I'm shocked that so many people have blinders on and don't want to learn more about this issue. There is no disputing Hillary Clinton and many associated with the state department and white house have lied. The hearing is about figuring out who all were included in these lies. No one can say any longer its just a "tea party conspiracy". After today's testimony by people on the ground we now know we were lied to and our media failed us. You can roll your eyes , shrug your shoulders, but you can't have a serious discussion and dispute these points now.

If you want to say no big deal the lies and motives of these officals are of no use to you that is one thing, but then I fail to see what you would ever wanted to investigate at that point.

To call Habib "from the left" is more than a little off base. You should read back through his posts. He's more rational and middle of the road than most on here. Not that you have to agree with what he says, but there is usually sound reasoning behind his posts. At least IMO.

  3. As I have mentioned before, I work in this field. This situation is so very complicated. I can tell you the following:

    1. Millions of people take psyc meds responsibly, and it greatly improves their lives.

    2. Many do not take them responsibly and take street drugs on top of, or instead of them.

    3. Sadly, there are parents who try to get their kids on meds unnecessarily so they can get the disability check.

    4. Insurance reimbursement for psychiatric care is pathetic. Hospitals are being forced to bandaid these people and send them out in hopes that they will get follow up care. Follow up care is very difficult because it can take months to get into a clinic. The mental health system is incredibly difficult to navigate, which sets patients up for failure.

    5. I have to agree with Spindoc when he said that parents have to make their kids their priority. Ignoring certain behaviors can have devastating consequences. Mental illness in often inherited. Mentally ill parents often can't properly take care of their children, so they are raised in the foster system or other family members.

    6. The stigma against mental health remains strong. Until we are ready to truly tackle this, nothing will change.

    7. I have been a nurse for over 30 years, the last twelve in psychiatry. The attitude of the very institutions I have worked in is the same. They throw big money at heart centers, birthing suites, luxury private rooms, trauma centers, etc.,but psychiatry always gets the short end of the stick. Every year, our staff (awesome people by the way), make do with less and less and continual budget cuts. It is very frustrating.

Parent's get a disability check if their child is diagnosed with a psychological disorder?

  4. Interesting conversation with several friends last night (two skipped out to an NRA meeting). A couple of these guys are sportsmen; most are not. Most just like their guns. Some have conceal/carry permits, some do not.

Among the quotes - "all of my guns are unregistered", "I've got a throwaway in case I need it", along with the often-heard "I'd like to see them try", "they'd better not come to Kentucky", etc. etc.

Definitely brought to mind the thread we had a while back along the lines of "What would you do if stricter gun control/bans are passed".

What do you say during these conversations?

  5. Just for a reference, in the Thursday night game last night there were 125 plays and 9 kickoffs. I'm guessing the is probably around an average game. Therefore, if kickoffs are 5-10% of plays in football and result in less than 10% of concussions do the statistics support everyone's concerns? Not trying to agitate things just wondering.

  6. Be careful with those math problems....we know how you are with math! :D

But your comment about voter suppression, even the most extreme voter suppression, is relevant. Because even with an enforcer at the door with the a billy club chasing away every voter from a certain party or anyone who had the intent of voting a certain way. The remaining voters would have to be completely error free in their voting. No errors or mistakes at all. Not one. Purely statistically, that is almost impossible with something as humanly frail as voting. An elderly person did not get confused and hit the wrong button? Someone with glasses or cheaters did not forget them and hit the wrong button or fill in the wrong box on a paper ballot? Not one?

As much as the 'every vote counts' manta is kicked about the fact is there is a certain amount of invalid, human or mechanical induced error in the system. Especially over 100,000s of thousands if not millions of votes. To have results this 'pure' is certainly a statistical oddity at best.

I'd like to see the guy from fivethirtyeight.com analyze this statistical anomally and make a prediction on the likely hood of this happening.

  7. So if the company keeps turning a nice profit the employees shouldn't want or ask for raises? Despite all of the work an employee does to help improve a company's financial standing the employee shouldn't want more of the pie? If I am making 100K a year and if the company can get someone for 45K to do my job I should take the pay cut to keep my job so that person doesn't get it or so my job doesn't go overseas?

If I'm running a company and I am paying someone $100k to do a job that could be done by someone for $45k, then I should probably not be in a management position.

  8. Let me be clear. I do not think that Gov Romney should pay any more than he is obligated to pay. My gripe is that the system itself is skewed. I would also point out that Gov Romney, if his political career is over in six weeks, can file an amended return and get that extra back. He paid extra for political reasons. Let's take three examples. A family of four making 35k to 45k, all from wages. They make enough that they don't qualify for the earned income credit, but they have enough deductions that they pay zero income tax. They still pay 15.3 percent payroll tax, so their effective tax rate on their income is 15.3 percent. We have a second family of four that makes 100k, also from wages. They pay about $12,000 in income taxes amd $15,300 in payroll taxes for an effective rat of 27.3 percent. We have a third family of four that earns $1,000,000 from capital gains. That family pays less than 15 percent, depending on their deductions. That is a skewed tax system. Gov Romney thinks that is a fair system. I don't. Our current system favors taxing wages over taxing capital. In effect, it is picking winners and losers.

Most money used to earn capital gains has already been taxed once. You don't think 15% is enough to take from gains on money that has already been taxed? What rate do you feel capital gains tax should be?

  9. Don't know. I have no clue how the economy works, how taxes work or none of that stuff. I am in a Union and democrats are strong supporters of Unions and their cause. I know when Bush was the POTUS my company laid off 80 Union workers and 40 salaried workers were permanently let go. I know when Obama was the POTUS all 80 Union workers were brought back and we have hired 25 more this year and 10 more will be starting in the next month. Obviously whatever Obama has done to destroy the economy in the last four years hasn't affected my company adversely. My company isn't spending less or holding money in fear of what Obama's economic policies may bring.

Corning Incorporated. Life is good here and especially in the PP92 household.

I used to feel the same way about taxes. Heck, it's a part of the life cycle right? But after I did a quick ballpark assessment of the amount of taxes I have paid in my lifetime, which is well over $100,000 at this point, I thought it might be good to take some interest in where those dollars are being spent. I am glad things are good with you and your household and your company. And I fully support your right to support whoever in any election. I just think it is important for citizens to keep our government in check, and not turn a blind eye to how our money is being spent.
