  1. This was one of those games that gives you the feeling in the 3rd quarter that...it's going to the wire.

    First half:

Sheldon Clark absolutely hogged the ball. If I had to guess, they probably claimed 16 of the 24 minutes of possession time. Each of their scoring drives were helped by a long (>15 yds) 3rd down conversion downfield. Like good teams do, they took advantage of a couple of Blackcat defensive miscues on their two scoring drives.

The Blackcats played almost the entire half on their own end of the field, but had a breakout TD run by Lincoln Slone (~65 yds).

    Sheldon Clark 14 Prestonsburg 8

    Second half:

Time of possession was fairly even. Neither team's offense put together enough plays to get to the end-zone due to tight defensive play and LOTS of penalties. Prestonsburg slowly turned field position to their advantage, however, because the Sheldon Clark punter had lots of trouble getting the ball off cleanly due to P-burg's rush. It was the field possession game that put P-burg into position to kick 2 Seth Moore field goals ( of 30 and 39 yds). Late in the 4th, P-burg was driving but turned the ball over on a fumble at the Cardinal's 40 yd. line. More penalties and one extremely pretty catch by a Sheldon Clark receiver put Sheldon Clark in position to attempt a 30 yd FG for the win with :30 secs. The kick clunked off the right upright, no good.

    Sheldon Clark 14 Prestonsburg 14

    OT:

Sheldon Clark had first possession. Two inside runs netted 3 yds. The third run netted one more, but holding was called on the Cards. On 3rd and 16, a pass to the 7 fell incomplete to a diving receiver. On 4th down, Sheldon Clark kicks a FG that cleared the crossbar by about a foot.

Prestonsburg ran inside for 2 on 1st down. On 2nd down, the Cardinal defense bit on a very good Hughes belly fake. Hughes then ran it in from 8 yds around end.

Final: Prestonsburg 20 Sheldon Clark 17

Note to the officials: You're there to keep the game fair and safe. You're NOT there to take control of it and be a "third team" like happened a good part of this contest. I think the Card fans agree with that.

    Nice breakdown.

  2. Alot of SC's early success was thier schedule.. Pburg was a tough physical team and they beat SC.

Yeah their schedule was a little weak this year but thats not why they had their success. Some where these kids lost their fire. They came out flat and stayed flat the entire game. Even the OT play was without intensity. I would have to say that SC was more physical and laid several hard hits. Some of the hits you would think would pump a team up but some how it didn't. There were also flags every where. They went both ways but you could see it feeding Pburg. SC didn't show one emotion.

  3. Prestonsburg just could not cover the kick off. I think this is probally the best Pburg has looked all year though. They had a few passes fall short. If they could have made it down feild this game could have been interesting. In all honesty i wasn't that impressed with Ashland. They are going to have alot of trouble out of JC this year. JC would probally name the score on the team i watched tonight.

  4. I will mention this again. Belfry a 2a powerhouse was a power house when they played 3a. Sheldon Clark a very competitve team year in year out in 2a had alot of success in 3a. They oboviously was not dominated by the "far superior" ,larger 3a schools. And this was not that long ago they played 3a.

  5. Gonna shed a little light here...

    Prestonsburg's non-district games this year:

Leslie Co. @ Hazard (a "Bowl" invite)

    Pikeville @ home

    Paintsville @ home

    Ashland @ home

1st game - This was the third consecutive year the Blackcats have been invited to participate. The event is VERY well run and our team/staff is well received. The folks in Hazard have been nothing but top-notch.

2nd and 3rd games - Pikeville and Paintsville are traditional rivals from long ago. The games are usually closely contested and always well attended. What more can one ask ?

4th game - Ashland is a traditional football power. Two of the three games have been very close, well-attended and just a LOT of fun (don't want to talk about the 3rd game...LOL).

With all that said...which of these opponents should Prestonsburg buy out of their contract (which are -with the exception of the first- home games) to add Central ??

    and with that answered...

What particular advantage(s) does Prestonsburg reap that it doesn't get with its current opponents ?!? I've yet to hear one, with the possible exception of stopping the Eagle fans' (and coach's ?) name calling (ie, "chicken", "afraid", etc)...

And please don't say "money", either. Prestonsburg's football program is VERY well funded...

    :bunny:

Money is one reason. Two it would get them ready to play a team like belfry. JC is a team that will put the ball on the ground and eat up alot of clock. I would say replace the first game with JC.

  6. SC will be to much for BC. They have two big running backs that really keep their feet moving. You will see them both break alot of takles. I actaully can't wait to see how the passing game will turn out. Bad weather prevented them from throwing the ball against LC. SC might really open up their offense in this one. I would say Hager will have a couple wholes fixed on defense. SC 42 BC 27

  7. LC has to improve on defense drastically or Johnson Central will score 100 on them. Coach Goldsmith has always been known for coaching good defensive teams but over the past few years that hasnt been the case. LC is still a year or two away from making a run at the regional championship. I wish some of the guys wouldnt had transferred. Goldsmith needs to give his younger guys a lot of playing time this year, and work with them. Congrats to Sheldon Clark. They will have a better season this year.

Better season? So are you saying SC will have a better season than last year? That means a region Championship over belfry. I believe you may be right.

  8. LC had a kid that could run the ball very well. SC had some problems on defense. There for a while it looked like who ever had last possesion was going to win but then SC really turned it on. This might be one of the best back feilds SC has had in a while. It might even be one of the best back feilds in the mountains this year.

  9. Sheldon CLark has a good back feild and a strong line. The Dials kid ran for 1600 yards last year and didn't even start the first couple games. Kelley will get his hands on the ball quite a bit now that they moved him to HB from FB. Sheldon Clarks biggest loss was on defense. But after seeing LC I will take SCHS 28-12.

  10. Cats Eye, would you have any results from the USPF meet in P'burg Saturday?

We had a few kids from our football program competing along with one kid from the general school population named Brad Slone who, get was going for, get this FOUR-HUNDRED and THIRTY POUNDS I believe -- this kid is SIXTEEN years old and weighs only 185!

It was Brad Slone who set a new high school record. He did 405. Then tried for 425 on his second attempt but missed it. Still an impressive lift.
