  1. Some of you, not all, go back and read your posts and see how arrogant you sound toward the hardworking people of Eastern Ky. It is just incredible. An are of the state that was neglected (primarily educationally up until 1991) by the rest of the state and an area that had all of its Coal Severance Money go to NKY and Louisvill, until the 1990s when legislation was passed that said most of the money was to return to the area.
A typical EKY biased opinion, but terribly inaccurate.

The coal companies came into EKY and took what they wanted at the expense of the hard-working people. NKY and Louisville had nothing to do with it. And to even come close to suggesting that the mountains supported NKY and/or Louisville is nothing more than a joke. We aren't to blame for any lack of education in your area either. The problems in EKY are far more complicated than that.

But don't worry, we'll keep building your roads and supporting you as always.

  2. At one time I worked in a private school and yes they are quiet different than the public schools I have worked and attended.

In no way are my rants (perceived by some as attacks) personal or degrading towards any group or system. I just don't think the different types of schools can be treated as equals in a land where the haves and have nots has such a large gap IMO.

It doesn't make any sense to bring all these social and economic issues into the picture. They really have nothing to do with the lack of success of some schools.

What really matters is the dedication and effort of the school system, the parents and the players. If the people involved aren't willing to put forth the effort and sacrifice necessary to be a winner, they will continue to fail. You can find excuses for it all day long, but it will do nothing to raise any team to the next level.

  3. Your calculation is the very reason why the state funding was ruled unconstitutional in 1990.
    And there's the problem!

SEEK is based on property values. It's not about services offered, or different kinds of students served. As property values go up, state contributions go down. At the same time, state law prohibits tax increases of more than 4%. So, if values go up 10%, your schools lose 6%. It's as simple as that.

  4. Why don't you have a simultaneous meeting across the state. Pick a day and then each area of the state; Central , Western, Eastern, NKY, etc. choose a gathering spot. Everyone enjoys a BGP's day and then you can come home and get on the site and talk about the great new members you met.:jump:
That is a fantastic idea!! I think we should go with it.
  5. I challenge you to find me a report of an accident on that highwayin Campbell County, where speed was not a factor at all.

In many of the accidents speed was not a factor. No one said that speed and carelessness were never factors. But there are going to be speeders and careless drivers on any road you travel. There has to be some missing element that's making this particular road so prone to accidents. That's what we were trying to say. But you want to just blame it all on bad driving, and that just isn't the case.
  6. So you have more insight into than someone who knows the facts of every accident that happens on it?

A 2002 study of the AA, done to determine how it would handle traffic flow, recommended widening three sections, according to Rob Hans, manager for planning with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6, which is responsible for the AA Highway in Campbell, Pendleton and Bracken counties.

The study called for the highway to be widened by one lane in each direction, to close several intersections with the side roads in each county and to create access roads to eliminate residential driveways that have direct access to the highway.

The study also looked at safety and recommended adding advance warning lights and intersection signage.

Minor improvements, such as rumble strips on the shoulder and center line and the intersection signage, have already been installed. But major construction work would cost millions and require legislative action.

  7. I can't buy the theory that it's all about speed and carelessness. If that were the cause, there would be daily accidents on every road in the country. Do people suddenly become more careless on this road? Do they suddenly lose all control of themselves. Of course not. It's the design of the highway that is clearly the problem.

Perhaps some of the accidents were caused by careless driving. If so, there must be some element of this design that is predisposing people to such behavior, and creating a condition that makes their reckless behavior much more likely to result in catastrophe.

Playing with matches is careless. But if a puddle of gas is present, the negative consequences will be both more likely, and more tragic.

  8. Channel 12 reports that they saw no one dead at the scene.

Apparently a pick-up truck, carrying an adult and two children, pulled out of Poplar Ridge, and was struck by a semi carrying sheet metal coming down the hill on the AA. The truck then lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic. A crane tried to avoid the truck and flipped over. The first truck also flipped and its load of sheet metal continued on down the AA where it struck an oncoming car carrying three more people. All passengers in both cars were injured and transported to the hospital. The truck and crane drivers were not injured.

  9. I love how people blame the road and not the people speeding on it.

So you've completed your in-depth investigation of this accident and declared speeding to be the cause? :irked:

No, the road is horrible and it needs to be addressed! Imagine I-75 with traffic crossing at right angles.

  10. Around 2:15 PM this afternoon there was another horrible accident along the AA Highway. This one (at Poplar Ridge Road in Alexandria) involved a crane, a tractor trailer, and two passenger cars.

Several ambulances and three medical helicopters have been called to the scene, as well as the coroner. There are at least six injuries and they believe that several of them are children. One 8-yr-old was flown to Children's hospital. A teenage girl was taken by ambulance.

Debris is scattered for hundreds of yards, and the AA Highway will be completely shut down for hours.
