  1. Really???

Pikeville 51 rushes for 354 yards.

    51 is alot of rushes.

    7 yd per carry avg.

No, that's not what I meant...

There was a lot of 0-3 yd. rushes the P-burg defense gave up, BUT it was more than made up for by too many >15 yd. gainers surrendered.

In other words, a lot of Pikeville's rushing was of the "big play" variety as opposed to the 4-7 yds. on the bulk of the rushes.

  2. Good win for Pikeville. Prestonsburg seems to be improving every week, they will be in the playoffs this year. Just give them some more games and they will be ready.

    Agreed...

Prestonsburg is just "not ready for primetime". The offense fumbled 5 times (losing 3), had 6 bobbled snaps (center and/or QB), and had 6 dropped passes (one of them in the end zone). Wasting 17 offensive plays against even a mediocre defense severely limits any production. Against a very good Pikeville defense it gives NO chance at all.

There IS hope, however. Prestonsburg moved the ball down the field very well (and scored) on its initial possession. In other words, the "scripted" set that was most heavily practiced was sharp. The trick will be to become proficient will the remaining playbook.

On defense, the Blackcats gave up far too many big ground gainers. Pikeville's rushing yardage came in big chunks, but on relatively few plays. The Panther offense fooled P-burg's defense a number of times on misdirection. Until the young Blackcat LB's learn to react appropriately to the ball (instead of simply crashing gaps and taking themselves out of the play), a lot of backbreaking gainers will be surrendered on counters and traps.

The positive for the defense last night was in its red zone defense. In general, when Pikeville went more with straight power football closer to the goal line, Prestonsburg defended well.

  3. Even if we get some rain tomorrow, the crowd will be as big if not bigger than last weeks. Johnson county has wanted and needed a football program to get behind for a very long time. JC finally has a something to be proud of in terms of football. IF and that is a big IF... JC goes into the ashland game undefeated, the crowd for that game will be larger than last years apple bowl.

    Very good post... :thumb:

The county school a long time has indeed wanted a top quality football program. The desire has always been there.

    Keep it up, Eagles !!

    :ylsuper:

  4. Rules specifically allow the holders knee to touch without stopping the play AND if I'm not mistaken he can come off of his knee to retreive a high snap and return to his knee without killing the play.

    :thumb:

I think you're right on, AT.

I wish the rule also applied to KO returners. How many times have you seen the returner accidentally touch a knee to stop a low kick ? I've never liked giving the kicking team a reason to kick low squibbers. KO's were intended to be returned, IMO... :irked:

  5. Well so far Prestonsburg has refused to play them!!

Gonna shed a little light here...

    Prestonsburg's non-district games this year:

Leslie Co. @ Hazard (a "Bowl" invite)

    Pikeville @ home

    Paintsville @ home

    Ashland @ home

1st game - This was the third consecutive year the Blackcats have been invited to participate. The event is VERY well run and our team/staff is well received. The folks in Hazard have been nothing but top-notch.

2nd and 3rd games - Pikeville and Paintsville are traditional rivals from long ago. The games are usually closely contested and always well attended. What more can one ask ?

4th game - Ashland is a traditional football power. Two of the three games have been very close, well-attended and just a LOT of fun (don't want to talk about the 3rd game...LOL).

With all that said...which of these opponents should Prestonsburg buy out of their contract (which are -with the exception of the first- home games) to add Central ??

    and with that answered...

What particular advantage(s) does Prestonsburg reap that it doesn't get with its current opponents ?!? I've yet to hear one, with the possible exception of stopping the Eagle fans' (and coach's ?) name calling (ie, "chicken", "afraid", etc)...

And please don't say "money", either. Prestonsburg's football program is VERY well funded...

    :bunny:

  6. ...

I'll think on it and post a more thorough prediction later. (Or, I'll wait for oneijoe and steal what he says.)

    For now, I make it P-burg 14, Pikeville 13, in a barn-burner. :flame:

I'm afraid there won't be much to steal...LOL.

I see this as one of those games where field position will be paramount. Special teams could be HUGE in this one (as per your 1 point difference).

Side note: REALLY liked Coach D's call for the field goal last week. Seth Moore is a good placekicker. He's always had pretty good accuracy, but he's now strong enough to have better range. Having given him the chance to develop a little confidence on the "3" may pay big dividends down the road.

    Prediction:

14 - 10 (the winner will be the team that gets a HUGE play on special teams)

  7. did any of the mentioned schools use the crumb rubber on their fields? I ask this because a doctor mentioned to me how many "rug burns" have gotten infected. I was wondering if there was a correlation between the popular use of the crumb rubber and creating a breeding ground for the bacteria. Probably not but I cannot remember this many cases before and I know many schools used the rubber in the past couple years especially with the artificial turf. Like I said they probably are not related but it doesn't hurt to ask

The most likely relation crumb rubber has...it, by nature, is more likely to cause tears in the skin than a purely natural surface.

A break in the skin gives staph (which is naturally present on everyone's skin surface, btw) an entry point.

  8. I can't believe you mentioned steroids. To throw out steroid accusations without any proof or understanding of them is irresponsible. Although research has shown that steroids "CAN" have some deleterious effects on the immune system, it is in people who use high doses of steroids over many years. You should look for realistic and probable causes for such problems before ever mentioning steroids. There has been an increase in staph infections everywhere and in all age groups. Many of them are antibiotic-resistant as well. I believe it is a result of new strains of Staph that can cause infections even in those with normal immune function. Add the heat and dehydration on top of that and you have a perfect situation for new strains of Staph to thrive.

I didn't accuse anybody of ANYthing...

The subject of the thread inquired "why so many staph infections ?". I was merely mentioning a possible contributing factor. It's not something that needs "proof". For sure resistant strains of staph (due to overuse of antibiotics) are also a factor.

Also, I'd appreciate if you'd refrain from assuming I have no "understanding" of them and are "irresponsible" for mentioning them because you couldn't be more WRONG.

Not talking about a thing does NOT make it a non-factor...

  9. What happened to the Blackcats?

    LOL....

Actually, this is the best opening game effort I've seen from Prestonsburg since 2001. The Blackcats have lost opening games every year since.

After last year's poor showing by the Blackcats, the improvement on defense is VERY satisfying. MUCH better team speed...

I think the offense will gradually improve with experience. With Prestonsburg's wide-open style, it takes time for the skill players to work out the kinks.

Next weeks game vs. Pikeville ought to be very entertaining !!!

  10. Another factor to consider...

The usage of anabolic steroids, both the prescription injectables and dietary supplement "precursors", is a well-known inhibitor of the immune system.

I think a LOT of players are using the precursor supplements...

    :bunny:

  11. The line play is going to be the Achilles of this years Paintsville squad. They have lots of good skill players in Pugh, Humphery, Sublett and Cantrell but skill can only take you so far. If the o-line gets it together this P-ville may be alittle better than most think.

    Agreed...

That's why I complimented the line play. So far, it's much better than I thought it would be. Coach Allen seems to do a nice job with them.

  12. The reason ppl say this about KCC is because it is a reoccuring theme with them. Last year they started out 2-0 and finished the season 3-7.

It's great to see Johnson Central has broken that nasty cycle... Nice looking team !! - watched the second half of the JC/South Point game last night.

Knott Co., just keep it up and ignore the snide comments - ya gotta crawl before you walk...

    :thumb:

  13. I'm pleasantly surprised with what I'm seeing from this Tiger squad...

Cory Humphrey gives Paintsville another offensive threat out of the backfield. Freshman Nehemiah Doderer was very impressive...that boy is FAST !!

Most importantly, though...Much better line play on both sides than what was expected after such heavy graduation losses.

  14. Congrats to Mason Co. on the win over what appears to be an up and coming program of Montgomery Co. Montgomery Co. used to be plain bad but seems to have that turned around. Once again congrats to Mason and good luck to them next week as well as Montgomery Co.

Yes, it's good to see Montgomery Co. picking themselves up...

Congrats to both teams. Sounds like it was a GREAT game !!
